Neither, really. Or I guess a bit of both? They need to evoke the organized militaristic vibe of the Third Reich while still being clearly new blood.

On a different note, I was wondering if there would be a way to establish very early in TFA that Jakku is just a more modern name for Tatooine. I don’t like clashing with canon, and the name comes up to often to edit out anyways, so I figure we could just have a throwaway line that establishes the two planets as one and the same. I guess you could put it the crawl, although that might be rather clumsy. Then again, where wouldn’t it be clumsy?

You could just not mention the planet’s name and add a second sun to that one shot with Rey’s speeder

Which is exactly why I proposed having the name of the planet change in-universe. Someone mentions offhand it was once known as Tatooine. Maybe after Jabba’s death the Hutts lost control of the planet and its new overlords renamed it, similarly to how when the Muslims conquered the Christian city of Constantinople, it became Istanbul.

Off-topic, but that’s not actually true that the Ottomans renamed Constantinople. It had been called Istanbul for nearly half a millennium before the Ottomans. It comes from the Greek phrase “In the City” (Stin Poli).

On topic, I’m not so sure how well that works because of how Tatooine was Luke’s home planet. You might think the people of Tatooine would know about Luke’s existance, but maybe not. Plus, Luke and Rey’s interaction in TLJ, but that could be cut. It could still work.

I definitely think that option could remain open, but I personally like Nev’s approach, where he just desaturated Jakku a lot to differentiate it more from Tatooine. It is a lot simpler, and less potentially confusing, than trying to create new dialogue.

I will say though, Anakin, I think you and I are ripped from the same cloth when it comes to our obsession with making the ST planets more interesting!

What’s the status on that anyway? So far I’ve haven’t gotten any good results aside from those few shots of purple Ajan Kloss, and even then the other shots didn’t turn out so nice. I guess you could manually recolor a frame of every shot then run it through EBsynth but that would get real tedious real fast. Anyone wanna try maybe changing sky colors with it? That’d probably be the simplest change. A nice green or yellow sky for some of the planets could give them an exotic flavor.

Anyway, let’s give a rundown of all the planets and what can be done with them.

Jakku: Just fuckin’ make it Tatooine. It works much better that way thematically to rhyme with the other two. Otherwise, you could go for cacti and a recolored sky.

Takodana: Rey’s line about green stops us from recoloring it, which is a shame given how pretty it looks in Autumn (although Endor looks even more stunning).

D’Qar: It’s not present in as many scenes so maybe some more radical changes would be feasible, such as adding McQuarrie mountains and yellow grass to the background to make it Lothal. Or perhaps palm trees and beaches for Scarif. Any planet that has grass, really, as that’s the only feature in the foreground.

Ilum (Starkiller Base): This one I’m actually relatively happy with. The trees and base built into the rocks are unique, and if we convert its destruction fissure into general volcanic activity like the concept art, the fire and ice theme would make the planet visually stunning. Just add a few lava streams to establishing shots and voila.

Ach-To: Unique enough already.

Cantonica (Canto Bight): If we emphasize the idea of it being an artificial oasis on a desert planet mentioned in EU material, that’d be great. The planet is pretty solid already, TBH. Johnson really allowed more originality with planet designs than Abrams.

Crait: So stunning it puts the Originals to shame.

Mustafar: Why is one of the most unique looking planets one we’ve already seen? People seem to like the connection to Vader’s castle so you can leave it as is. Besides, it’s there for like, 20 seconds tops.

Exegol: Actually pretty unique and particularly befitting of the Emperor. It’s just a shame you can’t see anything.

Ajan Kloss: Another jungle planet JJ? Really? We need to give it a new color scheme at least, hence my purple plants idea.

Pasaana: Another desert planet JJ? Really? I propose a boldly colored sky or just make it Jakku, tying together Ochi’s ship with Rey’s parents departure in some way.

Kijimi: Fine as is.

Kef Bir: Feels kinda like Ach-To, but whatever. We don’t see much of it, and you could easily make it Endor. We spend most our time there on the Death Star’s wreckage in the sea, which is an interesting enough idea on its own.

When TFA was getting ready to come out, I thought Jakku was going to be revealed to the first order name for Tatooine. I don’t think it would be super hard to do. Perhaps just add in a few landmarks we know from the original desert planet.

Here’s an idea. Make Canto Bight on Tatooine.

After the Original Trilogy, the former backwater world of Tatooine became galacticlly renowned as the birthplace of Jedi Luke Skywalker. Even though Luke hated the place, tourism industries flourished and elite casinos replaced the backwater cantinas. Of course, these developments completely misses the point of what Luke stands for.

This is pretty easily accomplished by adding a random voice over for a broadcast, saying “Welcome to Canto Bight, the Jewel of Tatooine. Visit Jedi Master Luke Skywalker’s homestead, just 2 parsecs north!”

This ties brilliantly with the message of Luke’s arc (the many subplots of TLJ rarely touch each other) and also is extra special in regards to the Broom Boy scene, because he’s also on Tatooine.

That’s a great idea but I’m gonna do it cuz it would clash with the ruined homestead from the end of RoS.

I’m not a big fan of people trying to force Tatooine into every movie, but that might actually be a decent idea. Showing how the government that was created after the fall of the Empire completely missed the point of everything the Rebels fought for, and instead made the galaxy a decadent haven for the rich. It’s not really down my alley, but maybe someone with better editing skills than me could try it out.

My preferred saga experience:
TPM/AOTC/ROTS (Hal 9000), ANH/ESB/ROTJ (Despecialized), The Mandalorian,
TFA (Starlight), TLJ (Fallen Knight), TROS (Resurgence).
May the midichlorians be with you.

It would certainly be a very meta concept for a bunch of corporate suits to fetishize and build an empire out of a story of simple farmhands and freedom fighters, told on fringes and frontiers.

Put the Lars Homestead MegaCoaster in the background of the crumbling ruins of their home and call it a day.

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

I think when it comes to making the ST planets more unique, I think about giving them distinct looks or key features that help them stick out in our minds. So as soon as we it, we know what planet that is. I think recoloring planets is hard to make look good, so I think my ideas consist of slight regrades, or adding key visual elements to specific shots to help make those planets stand out.

Jakku: I think Nev’s desaturated look is the perfect way to handle this. It’s like the sepia-Kansas of the Star Wars galaxy. It is a simple change that differentiates it from Tatooine. I think the idea of adding more wrecked Imperial and Rebels ships in the desert, to emphasize Jakku’s key feature as a junkyard planet, would be a cool addition, but would require a bit of vfx and may not be worth the effort.

Takodana: A random idea, but I think it would be interesting to add three or four moons around the planet when the Falcon first approaches it. Then later, when Rey looks across the lake and/or when Finn looks up in the sky, you could see two or three of those moons. This would give Takodana a distinct feature that wouldn’t require major vfx changes to every single shot on the planet, but it still makes the planet feel more alien than Earth.

D’Qar: D’Qar already has a distinct feature, its ring of asteroids, so I think I would just try to make the asteroid ring visible from the planet surface whenever possible.

Ilum (Starkiller Base): I don’t think any visual changes are necessary for Starkiller Base.

Ach-To: I think it would be cool to add a blue nebula in the sky somewhere to parallel it with Exegol, but this isn’t necessary either.

Cantonica (Canto Bight): I would like to add a geometric green spot onto the establishing shot of the planet to imply a section of the planet has been terraformed.

Crait: I think it could be interesting to replace the planet as seen from space with an image of Pluto. Obviously the red and white of Crait is its distinct feature, so it would be cool to see that feature from space.

Pluto

Mustafar: I think an extra establishing shot like discussed in other threads would be enough. Maybe just reuse a shot from Rogue One.

Exegol: I think it would be interesting to see a regrade of this planet. Either just to tone down the blue, make it more monochromatic, or even push it to be redder.

Ajan Kloss: I think it would be cool recontextualize this planet to be a jungle area of Naboo, sort of like the forests the Gungans hide in during TPM. Replace establishing shots of the planet with Naboo. Regrade it to match Naboo more, maybe add Elder heads into a shot or two. Hell, you could even add a Gungan into the background of one or two Resistance group shots. I like the idea of starting the story there in Episode I, and then ending the story there in Episode IX. It’s also a significant planet for Leia to be on as well.

Pasaana: Another bold idea, but I think it would be cool to recontextualize this planet to be Jedha. For one, it makes a lot of sense for a Jedi hunter to come here, of all places. I think it would also be cool to see what this planet is like after what happened to it in Rogue One. Both Jedha and Pasaana were filmed in Wadi Rum, Jordan, so as far as geography goes they already match perfectly.

Pasaana

Notice the large canyon that runs across the planet surface. We could create a mask inside that canyon, and then insert a lava texture inside it to imply that this is the result of the Death Star laser cracking open the planet’s crust. We also could create a asteroid ring around the planet to show that the debris from the impact now orbits the planet. Later in the film, we see Rey and company hide in in an asteroid field, so it actually would fit in with the film really well.

Then Pasaana could be regraded to better match how it looks in Rogue One. Some people might think Jedha should be more like a nuclear wasteland by this point, but I actually disagree somewhat with that. I think Pasaana/Jedha could be the Star Wars equivalent to Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Places that were once devastated by nuclear weapons, but now people live there once again. I think it would be really fun to rescore the approach to Jedha to make the audience expect to see this wasteland, but then they round the corner and see that there is this massive festival going on. There is something optimistic about that idea that I think also fits in well with TROS’ theme of “healing wounds”.

I also think you could reuse this unused shot from Rogue One, but replace the U-Wing with the Falcon. You can find a high quality version of this shot from sites that have lossless versions of trailers.

Jedi statue

Kijimi: We don’t really see Kijimi from space much besides when it is destroyed. Just to make it more visually distinct from space, though, I think it would be interesting to add city lights to the dark side of the planet, to help emphasize that a lot of people live on that planet.

Kef Bir: Simple. Make it Endor. Just reuse the shot of Endor from the TROS finale to restablish Kef Bir as Endor.

I know changing Ajan Kloss to Naboo, Pasaana to Jedha, and Kef Bir to Endor, seems rather drastic, I think it makes a lot of sense to revisit some planets from the past in the final movie of the Saga. Plus, we would still have two new planets in Kijimi and Exegol.

Interesting ideas, RogueLeader. The only thing I have a problem with is changing the Resistance base to Naboo. I think putting the base on Palpatine’s home world, and one of the most important planets in Star Wars, would be too conspicuous. Other than that, all of these ideas have great potential.

My preferred saga experience:
TPM/AOTC/ROTS (Hal 9000), ANH/ESB/ROTJ (Despecialized), The Mandalorian,
TFA (Starlight), TLJ (Fallen Knight), TROS (Resurgence).
May the midichlorians be with you.

Thanks! And that is a good point. If we try to establish that more planets have been rising up against the First Order between TLJ and TROS, then it might help to place the Resistance on a more well-known planet, showing that they have gained more allies. Technically they would be hiding in forests of Naboo, rather than making their presence there known. And I also like the irony of the Resistance being on Palpatine’s homeworld. Also, the film implies that Luke trained Leia on Ajan Kloss at some point in the past, and I like the idea that we would be recontextualizing it to mean that Luke trained Leia on Naboo, instead. Padme wanted to raise them there, so I like the idea that Naboo may have been Luke and Leia’s home for awhile.

I just like the idea of it being a place we know rather than jungle base planet #3, you know? At the very least, it would be nice to give the planet some distinct feature.

The ST is in dire need of planets that “pop”, liking your suggestions especially for Passana and Ajan Kloss.

Changing Ajan Kloss to Naboo is also significant to Rey’s heritage should anybody keep Rey Palpatine.

Sounds great! Everything you do is fantastic so I have great faith that you can pull this off!

On another note, how’s this going:
