The Usual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread - * TROS SPOILERS WITHIN * — Page 23

RogueLeader, YES. There’s been a lot of chat about other elements of the sequel trilogy but TROS absolutely drops Finn’s plot off a cliff, and it needs something like this to make it relevant throughout the full trilogy. Overdubbing the stormtroopers is a great idea, and a solution for TROS also needs to be found. I wish there were some way we could have elements of the First Order fleet turn against the Final Order fleet, but that’s likely beyond our scope.

Maybe some Stardestroyers could stop firing during the finale. If there is a way to keep Hux until the end, we could reuse his small hologram from the opening of TLJ asking why they aren’t fighting.

Just some ideas I had for a possible 3 in 1 mix of all the ST movies:

  • The Sith Fleet is at StarKiller base (mix StarKiller with Exegol )
  • Mix Sith Fleet firing with StarKiller base firing
  • Use Luke’s force projection as a real fight between them after Luke’s temple is destroyed
  • Have two attacks on StarKiller (day attack using the Crait footage, night using Exegol footage)
  • Storyline revolves around finding Luke and fighting the Emperor + the super weapon.
  • Retool TLJ space pursuit & Holdo maneuver as part of the attacks on StarKiller / Exegol.
  • No Snooke, the heroes just fight Kilo and the Emperor.

This is what comes to mind thinking about the strongest sequences in the ST.

Do you mean making him a physical presence on crait ?

Yes, a physical fight. They fight somewhere (some planet, doesn’t matter where) as a flashback, just like the flashbacks to Luke’s Jedi temple destruction.
We don’t see the end of the fight, but understand that it was inconclusive, and the reason why Luke retired to his island.

For me it makes sense that we get OT characters at the start of the ST, but then move on to the new ones.
So Luke should only fight at the beginning and then become a secondary character, only training Rey.
He fails with Ben’s training but succeeds with Rey, thus completing his arc *.

Just an idea, very personal but it’s something I’d like to see. 😉

  • another option is having both Luke and Leia to force project into Kylo, and then die at the same time. Makes perfect sense and also completes their arcs.

Interesting but very ambitious, any idea on how to go about it?

Anyone have any idea how Ivan’s edit is coming along?

I doubt he’ll ever complete it, so in that case just a few random shots of the fight strung together should suffice for a flashback.

I know this might be controversial but I think Jakku ought to be Tatooine for poetry reasons. It just feels strange having all three protagonists start on a desert planet and two of them are the same but then the third one isn’t?

Haven’t tried but I agree that the background might be a problem with those walkers.
But the way I see it I’d cut between Luke going about alone and sad on the island and the flashbacks. This way there would be less continuity problems. You only need some seconds of fight really, not the complete sequence.

I agree. I would’ve much preferred Rey not be from a desert planet at all. SO many interesting environments she could have originated from. The whole junker/scavenger angle could have easily worked on Coruscant or Corellia, but they just had to go with another desert planet.

But since it would be next to impossible to remove the desert planet angle, I agree it’s thematically more interesting to make it Tatooine and keep the whole “rhyming stanzas” thing Georgie boy was always on about than have it still be a desert planet, but not the same one that appears in in five of the previous six movies.

That’s my stance too. Either fully commit to making a new planet, or just cut the crap and make it Tatooine. I disagree about Coruscant or Corellia working, though. It needed to be a backwater planet.

In terms of making it a truly different planet, you could add unique plantlife or other structures in the background or recolor the sky using EbSynth. A green sky would be interesting. Especially against purple sand. However, I feel like the sand would be an absolute nightmare to recolor. At most, you could maybe tweak the color balance slightly, but that’s it.

But the more I think about it, the more I want a planet with a purple landscape against a green sky… Well the other ST planets are just as generic, so I could give that treatment to one of them. Preferably one that’s only in a scene or two so it’s not too much work.

Oh and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: make Ilum (Starkiller Base) a snowy volcano. It’s an idea that appeared in concept art and would help resolve the issue of the fissure that splits Rey and Kylo once you remove the “destroy the superweapon” part of the film. Just add lava flowing to some of the wide shots and voila!

Yeah the Art of TFA is very inspiring, pitty they didn’t incorporate a lot of the unique stuff in there. As for Jakku I think sprinkling crashed Star destroyers/Mon Calla cruisers etc wherever possible would give it a look that is more distinct and evocative.

Wasn’t Jakku originally going to be a wet junkyard?

So many missed opportunities.

Dwelling on those won’t help you enjoy the film. Take the film for what it is, not you wish it was, and work your way from there.

Making Jakku Tatooine would at least go some way towards explaining some of the more coincidental aspects of the ST, such as why a group of Jedi adherents looking for Luke are camped out there. People on Tatooine would have a greater than average interest in the Falcon as well, so a Junk dealer like Plutt would probably want to buy it just to put it out front and attract more business with a famous ship. Also, Rey’s Palpatine parent might have been drawn to Tatooine because of its closeness to the two people who overthrew the Emperor and be drawn to it through the Force.

Finally, Rey’s final scene would have special significance to her since it’s a return to her beginning as well.

Of course I don’t think any of this is feasible due to the amount of times Jakku is name-dropped in the ST.

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

Going to respond to a bunch of ideas here:

Here is my proposal for a reworking, that could possibly be done as a fan edit:

Episode 7(no roman numerals because its too hard for normal people, and it signifies a certain departure and non-continuity, and its nature as a sequel to a series of 6 movies): Shadows of the Empire (It is just a good title, forget the book or whatever)

The introduction should be rearranged to flow better, and the comedy (and cringe scenes) should be cut. Acts 2, 3, and 4 out of four should be greatly truncated, time skips are acceptable. The second half of the movie should be devoted to all of Luke on the island, and a greatly truncated half of the Last Jedi, ending before Krait.

Episode 8: The Last Jedi: Begin with Krait, and end 1 hour through the Rise of Skywalker.

Episode 9: The First Skywalker

Finish out RoS, end with a scene showing Rey going back and time to be Shmi Skywalker. Cut from “there was no father” to the part where Kylo Ren is force healing Rey, with his hand on her stomach. It won’t be a good ending, but it will be an ending, and it will tie together the whole saga (not so) nicely (which is better than not at all). Maybe somehow have a real Sky-walking scene or something, this could have been Kathleen Kennedy’s idea for the ending. I dunno, who cares. Who cares is better than “I don’t care.”

Even with lots of cuts, this would make TFA way too long, and TROS not long enough. This time travel plot would be so cheesy.

I love RogueLeader’s idea’s for Finn’s story, but for the TLJ scene, only the elevater scene should be used, not the walking scene leading up to it.

This is a cool idea, but even with saying the different battles are day and night, I think you would need added VFX to help sell the idea that Starkiller and Exegol are the same. You would have to change the environment for the Luke vs. Kylo fight, and change Kylo’s appearance. I don’t like that Luke wound’t really be doing anything to help in the present day, so all that time they spend looking for him is wasted even more than it is in the actual movies. Once Rey finds luke, if he doesn’t fight Kylo on Crait, it doesn’t lead anywhwhere. If it’s just one movie I wouldn’t want it longer than 3.5 hours, and that’s pushing it. To do that, you would have to cut out a lot of important stuff.

I agree that Jakku should have been Tatooine, and I would love this change, if it could be done. Realisticy though, the only thing you could do would be add “Tatooine” text at the bottom of the screen. It’s impossible, because, like NeverarGreat said, you would have to cut every time someone mentions Jakku: In TFA: Rey, Kylo, Hux, Poe, Finn, Han, In TLJ: Rey and Luke. It wouldn’t work if no one actually says “Tatooine”.

INCOMING: LONG POST
I’ve thought long and hard about to fanedit the Sequel Trilogy. Before TROS I was hoping to create my own radical edit that brought together the themes of all three movies and make them equal to the OT for me. But with TROS, I’ve realized the ST really has no point, because it all ends in the same spot as Episode Six. We don’t need three more episodes to the Skywalker Saga.

But I don’t want to just abandon these movies. There’s individual moments that are great! So after a long, while thinking, here’s how I’d fanedit the ST.

IMG

Instead of a full episode to the Skywalker Saga, this would be more an anthology, to be viewed after the happy ending of Episode Six.

“At last the work of generations is complete. The great error is corrected. The day of victory is at hand. The Day of revenge. The day of the Sith!”

The edit opens with Palpatine’s message, followed by the awakening of a fleet of Star Destroyers. One jumps to Coruscant, the New Republic Capital, and destroys it with a single blast.

IMG

Cut to black.

The “long time ago” text becomes a Blade Runner title crawl (like Solo):

The unthinkable has occurred.
The New Republic is dead,
destroyed by the remnants of
the Old Empire: the FIRST ORDER.

Led by the Emperor’s secret
apprentice, Snoke, and Kylo Ren,
the child of Han and Leia Skywalker,
the First Order commands a fleet
of mobile planet killers: the
ultimate technological terror.

Few oppose them. They are the
RESISTANCE, a final stand against
evil. But they cannot win this
fight alone. They need hope.

And so as the Skywalker Saga
comes to a close, it would appear
the fate of the galaxy lies in
the hands of the last jedi:
the missing LUKE SKYWALKER…

IMG

Forgive me. I feel it again. The call to the light.

Our first real scene is Kylo Ren and Vader. This immediately connects us to the rest of the saga and Vader. We also see Kylo’s struggle. Kylo leaves the room and we instantly transition to the opening of TFA - the Stormtroopers prepare their assault over Jakku.

IMG

Poe Dameron acquires the map to Luke Skywalker. TFA then plays out in its normal manner: Poe is caught, Finn defects, and BB8 calls into the hands of a random scavenger. All references to Rey’s parents being important will be cut: she is a nobody in this version, designed as an insult to Ben’s obsession with family heritage.

The Rathar Scene would be cut, but everything else in The Force Awakens remains as is up until the third act. Starkiller is cut and replaced with Kylo Ren’s castle.

IMG

This would be the hardest part of the edit to pull off, but an overall cold tint would be applied to these exterior shots and a normal ice planet be used for establishing planet shots. The effect would be removing the ultra Death Star from the Sequels.

Finn, who has been trying to run the entire time, leads a rescue mission for Rey. Han is killed in the process, which Kylo believes will cement his turn to the dark side, but he is wrong, and Rey accepts her destiny with the force and defeats him in battle.

IMG

And all of a sudden we are in the land of The Last Jedi. Thankfully this movie takes place right after the one before, so unlike TROS, it is easier to link them up. Both Kylo and Rey meet disappointment with their “masters”. Luke, from which the entire crux of the story was built on, refuses to help, and Kylo’s descent into darkness only makes him more conflicted.

The whole Resistance subplot isn’t shown at all. Keep in mind up to this point, the main characters have been: Rey, Finn, and Kylo. No need for minor character Poe to be upgraded to character arc in the third act. And Finn was just taken out of the story with his medical injuries, the injuries will remain while the Resistance is being chased, and he is only seen again in the “rocks” moment on Crait, where Rey and Finn embrace.

IMG

One random idea I have is for instead of Leia suddenly using the force, when she had no show of it beforehand, it be Ben who saves her life. I think this would add a real level of humanity to Kylo.

So the movie is all building to Rey and Kylo meeting Snoke. In this edit, the crawl will establish him as the Secret Apprentice to Palpatine, sorta a backup plan in case Vader went awol. There’s no reason to explain much more. Snoke is a stand-in for “evil emperor”, and I think this works better in an individual epilogue than a full episodic trilogy because it doesn’t need to explain everything. It can be symbolic of society constantly facing the same demons, without any of the episodic “fun fun fun” subplots being intertwined.

IMG

Luke is redeemed by Yoda in a final teaching moment of Star Wars, and suddenly, the Epilogue has more meaning. Yes, the Empire is theoretically at its strongest, but that does not mean we need to curl up and die. The meaning of the Jedi has never been about saving the galaxy, but providing hope for the galaxy. This would really contextualize Eps 1-6 not as this huge event but one of many Star Wars, and give the Epilogue a purpose in the overall story.

Kylo doesn’t have to be redeemed. The ending would be more ambiguous. The First Order won the fight, but the Resistance won the Skywalker Saga. The final scene of TROS would be moved up to show Rey, a nobody, taking up the Skywalker mantra, not Kylo. But the last scene in the Epilogue, imo, should be the broom boy, intercut with shots of Young Anakin, Luke and Rey all watching the stars.

IMG

I know a lot of these themes are presented in The Last Jedi, but I think an Epilogue Anthology would suit the story better. For one, having it be Episode 8 implies Episode 9 is going to end the war in a different way when it doesn’t. I also didn’t like the Resistance in TLJ. But the bigger issue I have is episodic films are expected to be continuations of the story, and Ep 7 doesn’t really take up where you would expect. A more introspective spin-off/epilogue would accomplish the themes of TLJ better.

Well I appreciate you listing out the names of the characters who say “Jakku”. Kylo Ren says it with his mask on, IIRC, so it would be trivial to dub. The others would take more work, though. Do we have any instances of them saying “Tatooine” in the EU?

I don’t suppose there’s any way we could integrate RLM’s Ewok death cult idea? I really wish we’d gotten it. I’m picture a barely living corpse covered in cybernetic implants (preferably with spider legs) being worshipped by mangey, cannibalistic Ewoks, who have been nursing him back to health with the flesh of their enemies. Integrating all that is impossible, but maybe we could have Exegol as some part of Endor, related to the Death Star wreckage (canonically two different moons, but whatever)? There’d be some close ups revealing the Sith cultists to be mangey Ewoks? I know it probably wouldn’t work, but it’s just a thought.

On a different note, I was thinking of perhaps having the cultists visibly chanting. I know it’s implicit they’re chanting in the film, but I’m talking close-ups where their mouths move to the music. Bonus points if they sing Duel of the Fates.

I mean, personally I’d hate to ruin either TFA or TLJ by putting in a TROS scene.

This is where I’m at. I’m not really interested in a trilogy redux as much as a standalone edit of TROS that fits better with the other two. I’ve enjoyed light edits of the other films like Hal’s, but generally I’m okay with the theatrical cuts. Maybe my opinions will change after watching TROS a few more times but I’m not so sure.

An additional idea for TLJ, what if we took the deleted scene of the Stormtroopers on the elevator, and redub >the one that recognizes Finn to create an entirely new context. What if the stormtrooper(s) recognized Finn, >but they let him go?

That’s a really good idea. Might even be possible to make that Stormtrooper Jannah with lines from the actress.

I think adding a green glow coming from beneath the surface of Exegol through cracks would give it a nice memorable aesthetic, while also letting us see what’s going a lot more clearly. It’d just take basic color correction and more thorough edits to long shots.

To get a coherent trilogy, you need a redux.

  • If you like TLJ style, you need to fix mainly FTA & TROS
  • If you like TFA/TROS (those fit well) you need to fix mainly TLJ
