The Usual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread - * TROS SPOILERS WITHIN * — Page 17

Figure out a way to omit all Maz scenes (which should have originally gone to Lando instead) from both TFA and TLJ. Edit Hans TFA dialogue to omit reference to Maz when Rey and Finn asks where he’s taking them. Restructure TFA cantina scene so that it appears that Hans has brought Rey here to find the basement and the lightsaber on her own.

wonder if anyone is willing to do Ben Solo: a Star Wars Story focusing on and constructed around mainly Kylo/Ben’s scenes (and scenes which pertain to him less directly for context’s sake) from existing ST footage once all 3 films are available on Blu. Could be a lean/interesting beast of a film, free of subplots.

This would be an interesting idea! I have had this idea of doing a stylized 3-in-1 edit following Rey’s journey, and rescoring the film with music from Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, and others. Seeing a Kylo-centric version would be cool to see too.

Not super on board with removing Maz from TFA, but I’d actually be really interested in removing her from TLJ. I have no idea why she’s in there other than putting Lupita Nyong’o on the cast list.

I’m making a 3 in 1 of the trilogy once TROS is available, my goal is to center it more around the original characters, with Rey as a viewpoint character sort of like Anakin in TPM or Luke in ANH. But I also really want to focus on the relationship between Leia, Han and Ben. The problem is there are a lot of subplots that will have to go, I’m trying hard to include Finn and Poe too, but probably in smaller roles. As for Maz, I really want to include her, since she is the only main new alien character in the sequels so far, and I think Star Wars needs that.
My edit won’t be a definitive cut because of all of this, more of a experiment.
A Kylo centric version would be very interesting though, sort of a reverse version of the prequels.

nice. maybe even a film which cuts subplots and manages to be something which parallels kylos and reys arcs entirely could work strongly too (for instance tlj edits which do this are really good imo). ReyLo A Star Wars Story??

this can also work and agreed supporting cast will have to be sidelined unfortunately due to time and the subplots just not being interesting.

this trilogy really needed an alien antagonist to weave through the films as a recurring villain. Something different than a gangster or a bounty hunter, but cunning alien adversary with enough prowess and charisma to keep Poe and Finn busy while Rey was off on her own journey.

Here is a radical addition for The Force Awakens if anyone has the urge to go a little crazy with it.

Nice!

Random thought: someone needs to edit Finn’s lightsaber activation so that it’s upside down.

Dew it.

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

I’m not sure fanedits can save TROS. I reckon you’d need more footage, not less. The first act already feels like it’s been trimmed within an inch of its life, we never spend enough time with any characters except Rey, Kylo and Poe, and the final act features an awkwardly silent Ben Solo.

What the movie needs is simplification: can the “Final Order” be axed? Surely at least one of the early plot points/planets can be glossed over to get the ridiculous fast paced first act out of the way sooner. Palpatine’s plan is kind of incoherent since he asks Kylo to kill Rey, then reveals he never really wanted her dead. What if Kylo had actually killed her, Sheev, then what would you have done?

Can Leia be killed earlier? I really appreciate what JJ was trying but to me it felt like an awkward fanedit - Carrie’s line deliveries never seemed to quite match the awkwardly engineered lines written to deliberately lead in to them. In one scene she practically just says “no”. It always cuts away from Leia very quickly. The worst offender is her death, which features Maz awkwardly explaining to the audience that Leia has decided to go and die to send a message to her son through the force, or something.

The ending is trying to be fan service but is absolutely tone deaf. We see Leia and Luke’s ghosts smiling at Rey because she decided to adopt their name for no real reason, immediately after their son/nephew has just died and faded away.

There are a few unnecessary jabs at TLJ which won’t age well when people watch this trilogy in a few years without knowledge of the BTS drama. Luke basically says you have to respect lightsabers and that he was totally wrong about the Jedi. He’s also wearing an awful wig.

I’m hoping for a serious bounty of deleted footage to be made available on the Bluray. Even then, this one is going to be a real challenge to fix up.

looked like it was intended to be a 3 hour finale, I hope we will get more footage with the blue ray release.

Please avoid spoilers when talking about TROS as the majority in this sub have yet to see the film.

God damn, I really don’t think this is salvageable. I think, for this movie and this trilogy to survive at all, we’re talking more of a trilogy edit than a single film edit. I think elements that came out of left field, like Palpatine’s return and Leia’s lightsaber, need seeding earlier. I think the jarring tonal swings between the themes and messages of each film need thorough analysis to find the most solid and coherent throughput. I think the full trilogy needs a solid review of what works, at which point a consensus can be reached on how much of it is retained for a far tighter ‘trilogy’, which could end up being only two films. It feels like a lot needs to change, to justify the Disney trilogy’s existence now.

I agree, It will take a trilogy edit to make a coherent story out of this mess.

Screw it, let’s get the conversation started, around what the core of the story should be both in theme and emotional arcs. It seems like the most coherent theme of the trilogy, that we have the most material to play with, is legacy and how much it shapes us.

Kylo’s relationship to the theme of legacy defines his emotional arc - he’s inherited a dark legacy which he struggles with and ultimately rejects.

Rey’s relationship to legacy gives us two options:
(1) She’s looking for a legacy, finds one (she’s a Palpatine), and rejects it. This is similar to Kylo’s, so far less interesting I think.
(2) She’s looking for a legacy, finds she doesn’t have one, and creates her own (with a hint of Skywalker). This I think is the far stronger option.

I think one of the biggest other issues of TROS is that force powers are something you can level up in. Palpatine can now lightning fleets - that has to go. Healing force power is something Anakin turned to the Sith for but still didn’t get - having Rey be a healer cheapens that. So does Kylo’s ability to return her from the dead(?)

I think this is cohering into a sensible approach for me - if we drop Luke dying at the end of TLJ, and we also drop Leia dying so that Rey can kill Kylo (which she heals to undo anyway), then we can have them both contribute their lives to Rey’s victory over Palpatine at the end, at the point where she ignites both lightsabers. That way we replace the silly “I am all Sith”/“I am all Jedi”, and Rey just being born with Palpatine power levels, with the heroic sacrifice of two legacy heroes to ensure Rey has what she needs to win.

I think we’re talking radical prequel-level new-dubbed-lines level fixes here. =/

I enjoyed TROS and for me it’s the best of the ST. I didn’t like TLJ.
So I suggest a two movie structure, based on TFA and TROS and using as little of TLJ as possible.
I’d move as much of the flashback stuff (ex: TLJ Ben Solo stuff, TROS Rey family) into the first movie and shorten the derivative plot elements as much as possible (ex: less running around inside starkiller base).

really good idea. might work best as a two-part film, rather than a 3-in-one or trilogy. I’d also move Palpantine & Snoke clones reveal prior to Kylo/Rey fighting the TLJ version of Snoke, then it’d make more sense and give Kylo even more reason to turn on his master for the sake of disillusionment as well as his other motivates. to this restructuring effect, the opening Kylo scenes from TRoS should come after some of the earlier TLJ Snoke scenes (?).

could potentially be a decent 2-part film if done with the right care.

*addendum: is it possible to kill off Leia in her ship (TLJ)? I’d think that that’d be narratively speaking the best place for it to happen.

Another idea of TROS I had would be to remove the Death Star lasers from all the Star Destroyers in the Sith fleet, as well as them destroying Kijimi.

Though I have to admit, the planet blowing up is a really good looking effect. I think it would be cool to replace the destruction of Hosnian Prime with that shot of Kijimi blowing up, if a trilogy edit cut the Star Destroyer lasers but kept Starkiller Base.

I like the fan cut which reduces starkiller base to just a base (cutting out the death ray and planet destruction) personally. I’d prefer to keep the threat/stakes higher with Palpatine and his destroyers

I wonder if there’s any way to just cut out Starkiller base? I really don’t like there being any planet killers post-ANH (removing the Death Star from RotJ is another question for another time, and one I think I already have the answer to). The planet killers after ANH are really bad power creep, though, and I think they really undermine the Death Star.

The planet killing capabilities of Palpatine’s fleet in TRoS would be really easy to remove, though, IMO.
