UPDATES:

I found also the italian, french, german and spanish soundtrack from BD: the italian is with "superstitious", while the DVD has not, so I'll use both; the french is 5.1 while the DVD is only 2.0, but I have the PCM 2.0 so I'll discard the DVD one; german was missing, so I'll use it; spanish on BD is better quality than DVD, so I'll discard the latter. I think I'll convert them to medium-bitrate AC3, to give more space to video and because the original recording is not that high quality - opinions about this?

In my opinion i think that is a good idea. Looking forward to this release!

andrea, why don't you take the dts-hd audio from the blu-ray, instead of the hd-dvd dolby e-ac3? lossless vs lossy - i go for lossless ;)

Obviously the BD DTS-HD MA is better... but I have not it (yet); if you could provide it (along with some subtitles) I'll leave out the DD+ soundtrack.

Hi Andrea,

congratulations on this great project!

It looks like it will be really awesome, I can't wait for it.

Regarding the final release, is there a possibilty you'll release a BD-50 version for higher video bitrate? Or at least a BD-25 version with just the 2 english PCM soundtracks?

I believe with so many soundtracks (as well as the DTS-HD 5.1 coming along) the video is going to be a little bit starved. Specially considering the fantastic color work you've done.

BDgeek, thanks for the compliments! But without the help of the other members (Jonno in particular) this project could not be done!

I decided to drop the DTS-HD MA (if someone with the BD wants to use it, he just has to remux this project video with that audio); using all the soundtracks I listed, there is about 18GB for video, more than enough to retain the best quality available - think that the original HD-DVD video is about 12GB...

Do you still want the DTS-HD MA audio?

UPDATES:

I'm preparing the final video right now, using a bitrate of 20,000kbps (that should be more than enough to preserve the quality of the original HD-DVD); I prepared the subtitles: full and SDH for english, and full plus forced for italian, french, german and spanish.

At the end, I've left enought space (I think) to discard the DTS I've made from the HD-DVD DD+ and replace it with the DTS-HD MA... but it must be around 3.5GB... if so, please send me a P.M. with the uploading link - THANKS in advance!

UPDATES:

Jonno has provided the english DTS-HD MA, along with the italian, french, german and spanish DTS soundtracks from the BD (thanks a lot!)

Today I finished to watch the last version of the video, but there were some frames with artifacts, so I must re-encode it (again)... I hope this is the last time! (^^,)

Apart those few frames (fixed using another color matching script), the whole movie looks really really good! I didn't think it was possible to obtain a so good results taking the laserdisc as color reference... so, I'm just thinking about the next projects...

Excellent news Andrea

Speaking of projects, how's The Matrix coming along?

I'm sad because I have three similar PCs, all devoted (more or less) to video restoration projects, but two of them have their GPU burnt, so I must rely only on one of them... and most of the time, the last weeks it (and now, too!) it was busy on "The Thing" conversions... but I didn't forgot "The Matrix", at the contrary: now that I've done a lot of tests, I understood something more that could be used on it too... next days, I hope to start it...

Well i'm glad to hear it's still a go on that project, but sorry to hear about your pc problems. All in good time we are all patient here.

Sorry about the computers but still super excited to see your work on the Thing. Hope it all works out.

Very excited to see this project come to fruition. I haven't watched "The Thing" in a long time, so I'm quite eager. Good luck on it Andrea!

As for your upcoming projects, I'd like to see your Matrix.

Might I also humbly recommend doing color correction projects of:

The Road Warrior (desert scenes too desaturated)

The Evil Dead (frightening blue color timing though you may have some issues since this LD has subtitles)

Pinnichio (no more technicolor look in the BD)

Yes the The Road Warrior very much needs something done badly.

Couldn't agree more about Mad Max 2.

Re-time + original PCM audio!

Maybe Andrea can help us with that ; )

Can't wait for The Thing release.

UPDATE:

I'm proud to announce that "The Thing" is ready... you can find onto the usual place - you know what... I'll seed it for the whole week, before I'll go to vacation, so grab it... NOW!

...

I strongly wanted to release it with a proper menu, maybe animated, but I didn't find a free BD authoring - other than MultiAVCHD, but it has some problems onto my PC, probably caused by the computer, not the program... so, I decided to release it as movie-only, because there are a lot of people that could wait no more (including me)!!!

Anyway, if someone would like to do a proper BD menu, let me know - I'd like to add the HD trailer, and my "spoRv" video logo... (^^,)

DO you have a sample of this in motion? I want to see it in motion first.

@DoomBot: there is an HD trailer... I have it, but it's not color regraded (yet?) - as every bit of upload speed is taken from "The Thing", I'll post it later.

@Dark_Jedi: I updated the first post, you could see the last comparison clip or this final clip (dog)

@The Aluminum Falcon: thank you!!!

looking forward to see this whole thing in motion. samples looked pretty good :)

about the dts-hd: did you sync the audio to hd-dvd video? i know for sure that you cannot simply add the bd audio to the hd-dvd video, as the audio will go out of sync.

Jonno have both the UK HD-DVD and BD, and he said that the DTS-HD MA matches perfectly; I think the problem could lies in the fact that the US HD-DVD has 12 missing frames in the middle of the movie, while the UK HD-DVD has the same frames than the BD... Jonno was really kind to capture those missing frames, sent to me, and I add them into the right place, so voilà! the DTS-HD MA is perfectly in sync... obviously, I had to change ALL the audio I made before, but this is another story... (^^,)

I've watched the whole movie twice before releasing: one, to discover WHERE in the movie were the artifacts - and almost of the movie was really beautiful; the second, to discover IF I have forgotten to fix some scenes - two, brief but annoying... so, the movies was 99% perfect, and I was so happy to re-watch "The Thing" ("La Cosa" in italian) and see that yes, this time the dog is black and white, the snow is white and not blue-violet-pink etc. I obviosly fixed that 1% that has artifacts, and watched it after fixing, so yes, the movie should be flawless... I suppose... well, 99% was perfect, 1% was fixed and replaced the wrong 1%, so it MUST be perfect! (^^,)

Should I start the next project ("The Matrix") right now, or I could have some rest, let's say a day or two?!?
