Now that I know that HD-DVD has a better quality than BD, I'd like to know if the HD-DVD is the "right" version to go... I mean, has it good colors, no missing edges, no missing frames/scenes, no alterations? I agree with DJ that a poor LD could not stand at the same level of a well crafted HD-DVD or BD, but if I have to choose, I prefer lower resolution video with the closest image to the original theatrical version, than the top-notch-out-of-this-world video quality *enanched* edition - but you know, I'm an old man from an old continent who loves old analog video formats, so... (^^,)

Have you not been reading this thread? the HD DVD is the go to video right now, until a new remaster comes out if any does, I hope it does at some point but who knows, but almost all want this but you still question it lol, believe me, your LD capture will not touch this HD DVD video, there is just no way.

100% the HD-DVD is great looking.

Look, a few pixels of additional framing won't make it up for the resolution and the grain. HD-DVD master is the way to go. The Blu-ray all look like total DNRed crap. No remaster will be coming because no one cares about Carpenter movies apart from the fans. They already remade this film, so I'm sure they think the 2012 version is better and more "modern" and are happy about the old version DNR image.

Remade? that was a prequel, this is a remake

DJ, cool down some.  No need to come out heavy hitting, LOL.  I understand where Andrea is coming from and a lot can still be learned from analog transfers.  I think you've made it abundantly clear which version you prefer and a number of us feel the same but not everyone has the capability to watch or own HD-DVD.  When my US version of The Thing arrives I've told Andrea I'll hook him up so he can see the difference.  All of us here are very appreciative of what TeamBlu has accomplished and we're just as excited about what they're working on.

I used the UK BD because of all those kick ass extras and the 2 video's lined up perfectly, I was totally shocked I did not have to synch anything, so maybe you have to with the US BD but the UK was perfect for me.

a little update on the matter...

i extracted the dts-hd audio to mono waves from the german blu-ray (same as the uk one) and compared them to the hd-dvd audio waveforms. the audio definitely goes out of sync. so it doesn't matter if one has the audio from us or european blu-ray, they both are affected in the same way.

Not to muddy the waters any further, but IF I recall correctly, the non-anamorphic DVD release of THE THING was a true discrete 4.1 port over, with no split surrounds. It is encoded as DD 5.1, but only has mono surrounds.

Later mixes were altered where the surrounds had some minor surround left/right activity. I don't know if it was a full blown remix or if simple directionality was added to the surrounds with the mix other than that left "as-is", as was done with CLOSE ENCOUNTERS.

Have been wanting to compare the two mixes and reconfirm my recollections, but the schedule here has been chaotic as of late...

Ah, that's really useful - thanks! So in my original timeline the 1998 5.1 mix (found on the Signature laserdisc as well as the non-anamorphic DVD) was actually a discrete upmix of the theatrical Dolby Stereo, with the 'proper' remix happening later, perhaps the anamorphic re-release or  maybe just the HD versions.

In the event I spent the time syncing the 1998 Signature PCM to the HD-DVD, and it sounds absolutely terrific. You'll find it in Andrea's project, hopefully very soon...

(By the way, the HD mix is most definitely a remix. I found numerous alterations when using it as the sync reference - mostly altered sound editing, smoothed-out 'splosions and such).

Yep, the HD mix should be included for posterity, and naturally a lossless encode would be preferable.

In terms of English tracks, the proper (i.e. chronological) hierarchy would be:

Theatrical stereo PCM (from Signature) >>> Home video stereo PCM (from Letterbox edition) >>> HD 5.1 remix (from HD-DVD or BD)

Which is better? Is the remix vastly different than the original audio?

I could get it from myspleen since its included in spoRvs My Thing Project from 2013. But then Id have to dl 22GB just for that track :S

You're missing out if you don't download the whole thing.  It's a GREAT piece of work from Andrea and it's WELL worth the bandwidth, HD space, and ratio to have.
