I was able to render the 2.1 with the proper ‘L R LFE’ channel layout! The UHD 2.0 mono is also synced, and I should be able to keep it in its native .dtshd file format. I waited to start syncing the optical track to ensure the UHD is ready, so back to the optical next!

The Image DVD audios are synced. The 1.0 Image rendered properly, but I’m sorting out an issue with the 2.1 render. The channel layout is defaulting to ‘L R C’ instead of the intended ‘L R LFE’. Either way, the hard part is done.
Next item on the list is checking/syncing the optical track from the 35mm scan.

The UHD disc contains the domestic mono track, but there are some drawbacks.

Good News: Yes, it is the Image DVD mono (not the MGM mono, which had changes: https://vimeo.com/246332731)
Bad News: This UHD mono track is missing most of the audio data in frequencies above 12 kHz. Here is an image comparison of the 1997 Image DVD mono and this new UHD mono: https://slow.pics/c/Fn2dG1X0
The UHD disc does contain some additional languages, which I may be able to include as options with this release.

Purpose:
This preservation aims to recreate The Terminator in its original theatrical experience – a single release that consolidates all audio options into a container with video graded to honor the original color timing. I’m aware of the various threads that have done this in the past, but all are now stagnant.
Here is what I’m currently working on – please reach out if you have any info that may help:
35mm Optical Track:
This is from a 35mm film scan, and is labeled optical track. The assumption is this was captured from the same reels as the video scan, but I have yet to check the sync, to identify any frame differences where reels begin and end. It likely needs to be synced manually, specs for this track are as follows: 2.0 AC3 @ 192 kbps, 48 kHz (147 MB) STATUS: Check Sync
Laserdisc Mono:
Ideally, the version included would be an optical capture from the THX discs. There are a couple options here, because I have come across multiple files online, and I’m honestly not sure if either of them are the tracks from Zeropc or Dark Jedi. If anyone has more information or additional captures, please reach out to me.
- PCM version: I found this in file type ARAW, but it appears to be 2.0 PCM, 16 bit, 48 kHz (1.15 GB). STATUS: Check Sync
- FLAC version: This came to be labeled as a laserdisc rip, but I noticed it matches the mono track of a release from iFT: 1.0 FLAC, 16 bit, 44.1 kHz (203 MB) STATUS: Check Sync
1997 Image DVD 1.0 Mono:
This is from my personal DVD. It needs to be synced manually, because the transfer used on this DVD does not match the timing of subsequent DVD and Blu-ray releases. Frames are missing at certain key points, around the intro and at reel change times. This will likely end up being in FLAC after I edit it to sync, but the original audio track is as follows: 1.0 AC3 @ 192 kbps, 48 kHz (147 MB) STATUS: Sync complete
1997 Image DVD 2.1 Mono:
This is exactly the same situation as above, but 2.1. This is from a DVD ISO of the other pressing of the 1997 Image DVD, that presented the mono track in 2.1 instead of 1.0. It also needs to be synced manually, because it’s the same as above. Again, this will likely end up being in FLAC after I edit it to sync, but the original audio track is as follows: 2.1 AC3 @ 192 kbps, 48 kHz (147 MB) STATUS: Sync complete
MGM DVD 2.0 International Mono:
From what I’ve read, the MGM discs contain a mono mix that varies quite a bit from the Laserdisc and Image DVD mono tracks – more effects, less effects, slightly different editing, etc. (For those interested, searching online yields comparison videos with the differences pointed out.) This is thought to be the mono track included with releases outside the USA. This track is from my personal copy of the disc, and appears to sync up with the Blu-ray already: 2.0 AC3 @ 192 kbps, 48 kHz (147 MB) STATUS: Sync complete
2024 UHD 2.0 Mono:
While I haven’t listened through this mix yet, I’m not impressed with the spectrogram. Much of the audio above 12 kHz is either missing or much quieter than it was previously. It is, however, the domestic mono mix used on the Laserdiscs and Image releases. Specs: 2.0 DTS-HD MA, 24 bit, 48 kHz (490 MB) STATUS: Sync complete
Hybrid: Laserdisc + LFE channel 2.1 by LazySod:
This comes from KK650’s regraded version of the Blu-ray, which not only included the studio 5.1, but also this track which combines: the laserdisc front L and R plus the LFE channel from the studio 5.1. Specs: 2.1 AC3 @ 640 kbps, 48 kHz (490 MB) STATUS: Sync complete
Blu-Ray 5.1
This will be included in an effort to present a ‘complete’ release, and provide as many audio options as possible. STATUS: Complete – This is untouched from the same source used for the video regrade.
Laserdisc Chace “Fake Stereo” Mix:
This audio is reportedly from the very first laserdisc release (Thorn EMI), which was an NTSC capture of a PAL source. It included a ‘sped up’ version of the mono presented in Dolby Stereo (ProLogic, which creates a virtual center channel from the stereo field). STATUS: Not yet sourced – If anyone has a copy of this, please reach out, as I have the ability to correct the pitch and/or speed issues to preserve it.
Video:
I have not decided which way to go, as there are a couple options:
- Film scan: I was able to source one scan of this film, but the bitrate is low and the color timing is likely not authentic. Identifying another scan is preferable here.
- Blu-ray Regrade: The KK650 regrade looks stellar to my eyes, but I am open to new sources for this project. Not sure he is operating here any longer, but a regrade of the same caliber would be perfect for this release. I would also be happy using his work for this, if that is permitted.
Subtitles and Chapters:
These will be made available from the Blu-ray used for the regrade. Happy to include additional languages if there is demand.
