I hope someone extracts those clips and uploads them someplace.

I don't know what you could do for Deathstar going to hyperspace I mean would it go into a fast spin or something?

It's actually really hard to visualize this...

Looking good anyway keep up the good work.

Problem is the deleted Vader hall scene needs to take place right after Tarkin says set your course for Alderaan but before the next scene in Mos Esiley. So Hyperspace cutaway was one solution.

I'm now thinking about pushing back all the DS scenes to earlier in the film to eliminate this bottle neck problem without any wierd shots of the DS going to warpspeed.

I'm having another go at this project. I'm coming up to the half/third mark and have just done the scene in Obi Wan's home. I've recut the sequence in the original aka Adywan's order. I've cut it slightly differently to Adywan's version in a few shots and added a small deleted shot of Luke at the end...

(^ Click image to watch video)

^ Bare in mind that although the video is finished, the audio is just temporary and I will be replacing all the music (e.g. the new music won't step all over Luke's new final line).

What happened to the earlier crawl?

Also, the early scripts had the title card read "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away an incredible adventure took place..."

And if I may ask, how much are you relying on the 4th and revised 4th draft for your work with regards to this?  I know both Deleted Magic and Star Wars Begins relied heavily on them.

Great project, btw.  I can't wait to see your finished version.

Now that the original crawl has recently turned up I may use that but it's so rough... even for this edit ;-)

I was going by the draft script but abandoned that idea as it doesn't work. Since some of the footage is shot in such a way that it doesn't support that ordering. I'm just cutting it the way I feel it works best.

I'm feeling re-energised about this edit now I'm armed with all the alternate footage from the Rinzler E-Books. Here is the first sequence I've used it in...

(^ Click image to play video clip)

There are more than 30 cuts incorporating the new material across the 2 minutes, changing the film as much as possible from the Theatrical Cut. As a result the audio is currently a cut up mess so I've muted it and temporarily overlayed a nice bit of Korngold. I've also done a few cuts just to change it up a bit and I've finally found a way to successfully restore the 'Threepio getting blown up/tangled' sequence to it's original placement.

theres some really nice intercuts in this, and that piece of music clicks into place surprisingly well in places - it definitely has the feel of an original assembly cut a.k.a. "the lost cut". i'd love to see you build up a version like this. maybe don't sweat the WW2 fighter plane stuff so much now that you have the rinzler stuff and the blu ray deleted scenes?

Thanks and yeah not going down the WW2 footage route now.

A test of 3 segments today...

1. Placement of the deleted Blu-Ray scene of Beru making dinner: Think this works nicely now as we get two punch lines from the single garage scene.
2. Extended Speeder and Sand People: Added back the deleted Blu-Ray Speeder scene and used the E-Book footage to extended the Sand People sequence out.
3. VERY Rough test of restored Han and 'Camp' Greedo scene: All the missing dialogue from the Blu-Ray cut of this scene was on the E-Book so I've cut it back in.

FYI As always with this project, all audio is temporary but video is complete...

Also just finished Irish Jabba, alternate Tarkin and extended/re-sequenced escape from Mos Eisley. Hi Ho Hi Ho off to the Death Star this edit finally goes!

This is as far as V1 got. V2 is already 10 minutes longer than the theatrical cut with the 2nd half still to edit.

clever edits! i like the way you cut to beru and then cut back to her calling luke. the greedo edit is completely seamless with the original camp voice now - if you make a trailer for this you should definitely use some of that greedo edit.

Thanks for the praise. There is more work to do on the Greedo audio as some of Han's lines need to synch better and part of his opening line is missing (Think it's on the theatrical voice soundtrack). But it's much better than on V1 of the edit where I dubbed the missing parts of the voice myself... badly. Although saying that my own attempt turned out to be surprisingly close to the actual voice when it came to light.

Found 'Behind The Magic' while rooting round in a few old storage boxes :-)

Wonder if it has any useable shots?

^ Scratch that, the b*stard won't install on Win7

Couldn't you run it on Windows 98 or XP in a virtual machine, and transfer it over to your normal machine?

Not sure what a 'virtual machine' is, an emulator?

Anyway, update time...

I'm within 45 mins of the end now so I'm gonna make a final big push to get the video side of things finished off. At that point I'm thinking of streaming a workprint. Then anybody who is interested can use it to help with suggestions on the music/audio side going forward.

- Added more Threepio lines that weren't used until the SE.
- Added two deleted/alternate lines/angles from the E-Book.

^ Once again the audio is only a rough and temporary mix.

Kind of, it essentially emulates exactly like a real computer and you can run OS's within them with no risk of doing anything to your main pc.  It's useful though especially if you need to run older, imcompatible programs.

I would imagine you would just be able to find the files on the disc and copy them via some decrypting software, since it probably has copyright on it.

^ Thanks!.

I just recut Cellblock1138 and Kenobi evading Vader, so I'm getting towards the finish line now.

Not sure if recutting the battle of Yavin is gonna be fun or a nightmare... probably a bit of both.

95minutes done now with half the post trash compactor scenes recut and extended.

This edit can be really interesting for me as a SW fan, because sometimes when I rearrange a scene, I'm surprised to find it fits back together again like it must have been before it was recut for the theatrical release.

A QUESTION FOR THE OT.COM HIVE MIND! ;-)

I was listening to one of the commentaries for ANH and it mentioned that the decision to have 'the Death Star be baring down on Yavin' while the X-Wing assault is taking place was a late post-production thought (To increase the drama).

This is supported by none of the cast mentioning it and the proximity of the DS only being refrenced in a few FX shots, cutaways and dubbed on radio chatter.

But I checked my January '76 4th draft script and that portion is as we see in the film, radio chatter and all. If it was a choice only made after principle photography had wrapped, is their an earlier script that reflects this? A shooting script? Plus was it intended to have a sequence of the X-Wings jumping in-and-out of hyperspace like in ROTJ?

Just something I was considering restoring to 'The Lost Cut'.

I am glad you have decided against the WW2 stuff I think It's just great to see the work print footage and it works really well in B&W

I'll never understand why Lucas didn't release that Lost Cut. Put it on the Blu-ray set or something.

It would've been a great extra.

We know it exists. The guy from Star Wars Insider got to see it.

“Anakin had those qualities so rarely seen, exuding an unmistakable confidence and yet still able to touch one’s heart in simply knowing how he was so flawed… wounded.”

It's been about a year since I started this project and a few months since my last update, so on with the show...

Last time I posted, I was about 95 minutes into editing Version 3 of this 'The Star Wars: The Lost Workprint' project... but I've chucked that in the bin. Time for Version 4!

A note on the versions:

V1: Cutting Blu-Ray Deleted Scenes in, in Draft Script order plus replacing all FX shots with temp stuff like B-17s and shots from 'Space: 1999'. Score retained. 60 Minutes long = Scrapped
V2: Cutting Blu-Ray Deleted Scenes in, in Draft Script order. FX shots retained but score replaced. 30 minutes long = Scrapped
V3: Cutting Blu-Ray Deleted Scenes and new E-Book Deleted Scenes in, with little refrence to Draft script and recutting a few bits for variety. FX shots retained but score replaced. 95 minutes long = Scrapped

Now, Version 4 will have a totally new "Temp" score, a new crawl, all footage restored from the Blu-Ray, E-Book and other sources. This time I will be completely ignoring the draft-script because I'm just gonna "Let go my conscious self and act on instinct" . I will be cutting the new footage in where I feel it works best for pacing, story and action. Plus if I can think of a way to recut the original film footage I will be (Not just rearranging scenes but going shot-by-shot). This will be as different an experience from the Theatrical Cut as I can make it.

Here is a "Sketch", if you will, of the new opening 6 minutes...

https://vimeo.com/91877504

(Password: fanedit.org)

Please note:
- All music replaced but unmixed in terms of levels
- A VERY temporary and unmixed audio FX track has been left on (Just for illustration)
- Aged film-stock effects are also temporary (See below)
- Crawl will be replaced, in all probability with the known 'Lost Cut' version of the words but maybe not
- The Stormtrooper assault you see a little of at the end has not be radically recut yet (It will be)

Here is a little test of some of the Aged film-stock effects that I will be using eventually (When I can get them perfected). It's overlaying real film damage..

https://vimeo.com/91741197

(Password: fanedit.org)

The amount of "damage" still needs a lot of work. Thanks to Rogue-theX for tips on how to do it.

Lastly here is a new teaser poster that may look familiar ...

One think I want to suggest to both "Lost Cut" creators is to possibly replace all the space battle scenes with footage of models/toys in their place.  Wasn't Lucas not pleased with the initial battle footage?  So replace it with raw scenes.  This would be for someone who is adventurous in order to make the edit more of a completely different film like the "Lost Cut" is supposed to be.

Just a suggestion.
