Thanks to daneditor's suggestion to use dialogue from 'Star Wars: The Interactive Boardgame' and darth_ender's kind uploading of said game. I've been able to create new dialogue for Vader that is unique to this scene instead of re-hashing lines from elsewhere in the OT. Thought I'd show it in colour as you can already see how the BW version looks anyway, on my Vimeo channel.

The Vader scene works really well with the new dialogue! Great work. The only thing I'd suggest is maybe reduce the volume of Vader's last line as he walks away, just slightly.

Ronster is working on making the sound mix smoother in that scene. The last line is a tricky one, too quiet and you just plain can't understand the line.

here you go what do you think of this....

the "to" could not be used as it's a totally different pitch and pitch shifting did not work.

Much better thank you Ronster!

Love how you've removed the "Dark" part of "Dark master" and trimmed the end of Bast's speech. This shorter finish means they are no longer talking all the way 'til the back of the set.

However, could you re-upload the Vader vocal with a second or two of lead in audio. For some reason it starts so abruptly that it is sounding wierd when I mix it in. The "There..." part of "There are no..." is getting lost.

I'll send you a PM with a link to the first 70mins of the Workprint. You can see what you think of that (Obviously the Vader/Bast scene is still the old mix).

I'm really pleased with it as it's nice to view all of the deleted material in context at last.

Thanks again!

Do a colour version so others can use the clip too as a resource clip... Perhaps some help for others too

Colour version done and uploaded to Vimeo in HD...

http://vimeo.com/66579702

At least it's an HD upload of the semi hi-res image that was on the BR. I did some minor colour work to up the contrast a tad and removed some of the hazy red hue.

Tried to put it on YouTube aswell but the auto-detecting-youtube-nazi-bot wouldn't allow it.

Thanks again to Ronster, Darth_Ender and daneditor for the help with this.

Vader sounds muffled... I will have to re-do this... Sorry but It does not sound correct

Perhaps, it's an improvement but yes it does sound a little muffled.

I'd say that is a lot better now

just a thought but after watching it a few times I think it might be better to cut it back on Vaders last line to "inform me when we are in super lasser range" and leave it at that.

It's more blunt and Vader should not be entertaining the idea he will fail can you chop that in your editor as I think it will improve it further. And then I think it is done

but If you wan't to keep it fine It's just where I can see perhaps further improvement

I wanna keep it, for two reasons.

1. Mainly because there would be a big empty silence at the end as you watch the actors walk away. This would be fine (Even an improvement) if I cut the end of the scene tighter but with this being an "All the material" workprint I don't want to trim out this unique snippet of footage.

2. But also because, I really like having a 2nd reference to the Emperor in SW (After Tarkin's mention of him disolving the senate) especially as it identifies Vader's relationship to Palpatine. Then it's already established going into ESB which is nice if you're watching the OT trilogy. Plus it's nice to keep Palpatine more involved if you're watching a PT into OT marathon!

I'm not sure about a piano only score, but I have one that's  done on pipe organ

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.

I just downloaded the first 70min and this is a really cool project! I love getting to the blu-ray deleted scenes reintergrated into the film and the b&w workprint aesthetic recreated. Are you still working on this? I would have opted to use some of the pics from the lost cut article http://www.starwarsholidayspecial.com/swcs/episode4/lostcut.html

and inserted them 'with missing scene' type title cards for a couple of seconds, e.g.

http://i40.tinypic.com/2jfax76.jpg

Also on the page i linked theres also a clip of an additional few seconds of low rez mos eisley footage from the holiday special, i wonder you considered plugging this in somehow (but sourcing a higer rez source):

Thanks, glad you like it. I haven't done any work on this edit since finishing the 70mins you've watched no. I'm dreading trawling through days of WW2 and pre77 Sci-Fi films to find the material I need for Yavin. Suggestions are always welcome.

Thanks for the article link, interesting stuff. Shame the linked material is of an unusable quality. I can see the shot of people fleeing before the Stormtroopers working nicely.

I started this edit with title cards everywhere as you suggest but when it started to get good I realised that if I picked the right footage I didn't need them. The image told the story just fine. I think I tried that sandcrawler shot at one point but elected to go with a McQuarrie painting instead.

Well if you didn't want to the WW2 footage for the Yavin battle you could maybe cut in stills of the story board in time with the soundtrack (i think there is a complete set in the back of the hardcover of 'making of star wars' rinzler book but i dont have the hardcover). Of course it would be much much less exciting than having moving footage, and make it more like a test animation, but it would at least be in keeping with the films production history. Or maybe this would be an idea for a subsequent project, where you could perhaps include some of the botched takes from the empire of dreams documentary and basically make a alternate reality rough cut of the film without worrying about the story flow as much, as just making an original mash-up.

Cool story boards. Will be going for moving footage though.

Anybody know what WW2 film/films are shown intercut with the Tie-Attack in Empire of Dreams?

Battle of Britain I think or at least this is what inspired the battle of Yavin

Battle of britain

^ 'Battle of Britain' is gonna be used for Yavin for sure. Already used some shots of Heinkel's from that film to represent Ties patrolling the Death Star.

X-Wings are gonna be Spitfires, Hurricanes and Lightnings.

The Falcon is a B-17 - Same sort of nose/cockpit and the top/belly guns are gonna come in handy.

As for the unusable footage, there are several fairly high quality copies of the Holiday Special available that are better than what you see there (Zion's Hybrid I believe is best).  You can just splice those clips in if you wanted.

I'll give that version a go. Never made it through the Holiday Special. It's so bad that it can't even be enjoyed on an ironic level.

^ The cartoon section is tolerable. Not good as some say but it did give us the brilliant Droids cartoon...

^ Anyody else have the Droids Dairylea VHS? I practically wore that sh*t out.

I suspect you don't want to go back over the first 70mins but I had an idea to insert a shot from a making of documentary into the mos eisley scene, its probably too harsh a shot to look nice but it would be the zoom shot onto the jawas at around the 12.42 mark in this doc., inserted in place of the still shot of the exterior cantina, right after the cross cut to luke after ben's dialogue "..weak minded".

Great suggestion... think I'll use that Frank.

Downloaded that version of the Holiday Special. Quite decent quality thanks.

Anybody noticed that Chewbacca's house has got a modern flat-screen TV in the kitchen? It looks exactly like something you'd buy in the shops now! (Even got HDMI ports down the side). Easy to miss as you are probably concentrating not on the TV, but on the actual TV program featuring a deranged old drag-queen in blackface telling you how to cook Bantha steaks?!!?!

Were the makers of this program mentally unstable.
