A suited Darth Vader chasing down Jedi film would make up for some of the stupidity of ROTS and could tie in with the Rebels series.

At this point I assume that the Rebels series is the same level of stupidity as PT. I would prefer they don't link it with OT/ST.

But the PT is already linked with the OT/ST. Along with Rebels before it even debuts.

Well of course PT has many references to OT. But from OT perspective, I can easily ignore PT and Rebels. However if standalone films will heavily link themselves to PT/Rebels then it is hard to ignore them without being forced to ignore the standalone films themselves.

Here's a summary of a  fan-fic I outlined a while back. At the time I was considering it for an audio-drama.

BACKSTORY:

An indeterminate time befor "Star Wars." A terrorist attack kills a class of Jedi Padawans, only four survive. Three, deeply damaged emotionally, take bloody vengeance on the terrorists, are expelled from the order, go bad, and fly off to a backwater corner of the galaxy to carve themselves out a little power and wealth. One survivor stays and becomes a Jedi.

The three outlaw ex-Padawans do all sorts of bad stuff. This ends when their leader, the most bloodthirsty crazy of them, gets pregnant. The love she feels for her offspring snaps her out of the darkside madness and she goes into hiding with her child.

THE STORY:
On a little planet of nothing but tiny archipelagos and sea monsters, a teenager and his/her mother live a simply life of isolation. One day while the child is out fishing or something, the mother gets kidnapped and their island basically nuked.

The child (Lets car her/him Jo) finds a spaceship hidden in a cave, along with her mother's old valet droid, now slightly insane from being looked in a closet for 15 years. She goes off to find her mother and meets up with the Jedi survivor.

The character twist is this. The Jedi (lets call him Jack) is a piss poor Jedi, reckless and impatient and not that strong in the Force,  because he's never really gotten over the terrorist attack. Jo has all the virtues of a great Jedi, but is not Force sensitive, partly due to the massive emotional scars her mother has.

Jo, Jack, and CrazyDroid have to infiltrate the Bad Jedi Fortress, which in contrast to the Empire, is a dank jungle protected by legions of aliens the Bad Jedi types have convinced that they are gods. There's a spaceship chase through superhuge trees

On this adventure Jo meets the bad Jedi that's her father. He says "I want you to know that I am your father." and she can say "Yeah. I more or less figured that out by now." This Bad Jedi spent 15 years looking for his offspring, and is disgusted she doesn't feel the force.

Eventually, the weakest Bad Jedi tires of all the fighting and released his hold over the native's minds. This brings the climax to a lightsaber fight between Jack and the remaining Bad Daddy Jedi, and Jo trying to rescue her mother from a burning and collapsing temple. Jo finally feels the Force when she hears her mother 'calling' to her.

Good triumphs. Jo declines to go learn to be a Jedi because there's rebuilding that needs to be done with her mom.  THE END

The Han Solo film would offer the most for fans of the original trilogy in terms of character familiarity. With Han Solo, you get Chewie, Lando, The Empire, the Falcon, Jabba, Boba....it's a near foregone conclusion this film is made and could easily segue to Episode 4. Han is the central character but we get lots of supporting characters out of this.

But aside from that, I have no interest in seeing a back story for any of the other OT characters i can think of unless its a dedicated Boba Fett movie which has Western written all over it. A badass who doesnt say much and kills/captures people.

Do I want to see Luke working moisture farming? Darth Vader killing Jedi? Princess Leia doing political stuff? The rise of Gran Mof Tarkin? 2 hours of Yoda waxing philosophical? Not much fun or adventure in any of this stuff.

Oh....Wedge. The one genre hollywood hasnt really exploited to the nth degree is aerial dogfight movies. Lucas based his space battle scenes on old war footage of dogfights. This could be like a sci fi Top Gun minus the homo erotic undertones.

Who doesn't want to see the amazing adventures of Willrow Hood:

Or the exciting tales of Bane Malar:

And just think of the fantastic buddy film you could get out of these two:

And while you think I jest, I would seriously watch all three of these in a heart beat. =|

The Marvel comic and the radio series devoted an installment to Luke's skyhopper days with Biggs. It could be like American Graffiti, only with sandpeople.

I've long imagined Yoda being more reckless and crazy than Luke in his youth. The advantage of being more than 800 years old is few of your peers know what you were like as a padawan. The transition into the Yoda we know and love might be a compelling story. ;)

I'm absolutely sick of Boba and Revan. I don't want to see anything involving either of them.

What is that from, and why is the lady wearing a stewardess hat from 2001?

I hope it doesn't involve and major characters, let the Saga proper be their stomping grounds.  Boba Fett is the exception.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Long story short: it's a story within a story that is told differently from different perspectives.  It is quite Bizarre.

I love GB but none of my friends have seen it or have any idea what it is.

Star Wars could do with a bit of Sam Rockwell.

I read somewhere yesterday that it would be "Fett" "Solo" and "Rebels".

BREAKING NEWS:

GARETH EDWARDS AND GARY WHITTA ONBOARD FOR STAR WARS STAND-ALONE FILM

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year's smash hit Godzilla.

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life -- join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm," said Edwards.

Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010's The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

Edwards treated Godzilla with respect so I bet he'll do the same with Star Wars. Hopefully his Star Wars is going to end up less restrained and generic than his Godzilla (which I liked overall, despite its shortcomings). I could do with more flavour and less uninteresting characters who somehow dominate the movie despite being effectively cut out of them, for one thing ;)

On the other hand, Whitta's track record is downright horrifying to me.

Two whole films is not quite enough of a track record, particularly when one of them is known as decent and the other was probably terrible because it was a Jaden Smith vehicle.

It's not just those two. Prey is easily the best out of the three, but it still isn't very good. I have no interest in The Walking Dead, though, so I've got no clue as to how those games turned out. Maybe that's where he shines. I hope.

There is a good chance After Earth wasn't entirely his fault, but I'd still be cautious either way. And I obviously disagree with calling The Book of Eli "decent" ;)

His work on The Walking Dead was excellent.

Whitta did excellent work on The Walking Dead games.

Also, he has been VERY vocal of his dislike of the SEs and PT.

This is incredibly exciting news. Whitta's dislike of the SEs and PT is huge, and his work on The Walking Dead game was good enough to win a BAFTA.

Very, very excited.
