The Skywalker Legacy (working title) (* unfinished project *) — Page 2

Commander Courage: To be honest, I had originally conceived of the ROTS space battle being used that way, but it seemed like I would have the flashbacks concentrated too heavily in that talk between them at Ben's home. Flashbacks are good, but drawing attention away from Luke's perspective too often could make it too confusing or even make it lag in spots. I'm trying to keep a good flow here.

I'll have to throw together a rough cut to see how things flow with all the flashbacks there instead of being spread out as I'd hoped, I guess. I'm still holding out hope that I can find a way to make this work with the flashbacks being more spread out than that. After all, the Big-Mig-Maker will be inserted when they're at Ben's, so that alone will hold quite a presence there and would dwarf any importance the other flashbacks might have.

I had a rough cut thrown together for the sequence when Luke first inquires about the name Obi-Wan, where I used an add/dissolve (white) to transition to a scene from TPM, where Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are talking as Jar-Jar gathers the Gungans. That's the conversation where Qui-Gon tells Obi-Wan that he sees that Obi-Wan shall be a great Jedi and that he is far wiser than Qui-Gon himself. That would show Old Ben as the young Obi-Wan, an introduction of sorts to the man he once was as he first became a Jedi Knight. I was concerned about that flashback sequence dragging the story away too far though, being a distraction instead of being the introduction I'd like.

In theory, this is being produced to appeal to and be appreciated and enjoyed by all, not just fans of Star Wars. And so I'm trying to keep things flowing along nicely. Long flashbacks should be few and far between. Brief glimpses are what I'm shooting for, with rare exception -- hence the idea of flashng to brief snippets of Obi-Wan from each of the PT to show his evolution from a young Padawan to the grizzled old hermit we meet in ANH. I'm thinking I can afford to throw one really big one into each Act though. With the Big-Mig-Maker being reserved as the marquee flashback for ANH, I'm trying to keep the others shorter.

Speaking of that sequence, I'm willing to admit this will drive me insane by the time it's done, but it's slowly -- painfully almost -- coming together.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Been a while so I wanted to give an update on my progress or at least let everyone know I'm still alive and beating the footage into submission as best I can. I'm attacking the crawl next, and so I'm learning about how to use Adobe After Effects. This has been slow and tedious to look at, but an interesting process to learn. It should be pretty good when done, I think.

I've been working up more storyboard type layouts for the BigMigMaker, and I've been toying with ideas for some of the dialogue, mainly jotting down notes from memory while I'm at work. Progress may be pretty slow for the moment as things at my job have picked up quite a bit. I've spent most of the last couple weeks working 37 hours a day, nine days a week, so it's going to be slow until I start my vacation. I'm waiting on quality footage to be acquired from the ROTS DVD anyway, so I have to wait for that until Tuesday morning after work.

Beyond that, progress continues. Patience is the key.

This edit is a really interesting Idea, when you consider just how alike anakin and Luke skywalker are.
Earlier on Luke followed the same path as anakin but Ultimately did not fall to the dark side, whereas Anakin's path took a divergent path towards evil.

Vader is'nt only Luke's father, but in the truest Jungian tradition he is luke's shadow self.

This is what i got from the luke cuts vader's head off in the cave sequence on dagobah, and see's his own face.

The real conflict of star wars is an internal one, the monster within, or one's own darker nature.

Fairly similar to the evil Ruling Rings influence on frodo in lord of the rings.

I always thought you could turn the six episode saga into three episodes, by taking each episode of the OT, intercut flashbacks from the Prequels (Godfather II style), telling Luke's story and Anakin's story simultaneously, and depending on what you reveal and when you reveal it, you never have to lose any of the surprises (Vader as father, Leia as sister, etc.). This is great because you only keep the good parts of the Prequels and don't have to deal with Jar-Jar or anything else you don't want to.

This is very close to what you're doing, so I'm very interested to see what you come out with, TDH.

The flashback of Obi-Wan and Anakin actually fighting Vader though is something I had never even considered, and it's a great idea to sort of throw the audience off as they're seeing what Luke imagines. It's gonna be tough to synchronize everything on a thematic and emotional level, but by focusing on Luke, you've probably freed yourself up a little. If it works, this could be a really amazing project.

Thanks for the words of support! I admit up front though that this probably will not be the perfectly executed edit that we've come to expect from the resident gurus such as Darth Editous, ADigitalMan, OCP or MagnoliaFan (just to name a few off the top of my head). I can only hope I present something watchable and interesting for viewers.

Enough talk for now though. Time to dive into some editing.

Slow and steady progress so far. Lots of cuts for the BigMigMaker to get what I want.

This is obviously the biggest undertaking I've ever gone for, so I've decided to take the advice of Rikter and others just to take my time, take plenty of breaks with other projects, and learn every bit of software that may help me along the way. I've also decided not to worry about the Fan Edit contest. If it's ready I'll enter it, but I'm not going to rush it and not have it the way I want it, just to get it entered. I really just want this to be right, I guess.

I've progressed through a lot of the easier stuff so far, taking the movie from the opening (new crawl not yet finished and inserted) all the way up to the BigMigMaker, which is being inserted into the conversation in Ben's home on Tatooine.

The original inspiration for a lot of this was the teaser for ROTS, and as a result, I decided to follow that vein for the description to Luke of the Jedi Knights. When Obi-Wan describes the Jedi to Luke, there's a flash to Jedi igniting their sabers on Geonosis from AOTC, then a cut to the Jedi in a circle in the arena, fighting off the battledroids. Then another cut to Obi-Wan leaping into the air to kick two battle droids in TPM on Naboo. That's followed by Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon battling the droids, until Obi-Wan's voiceover says "before the dark times" which shows the clone army as seen at the end of AOTC, same as it was used in the teaser. Unlike the teaser though, there's a flash and then back to Obi-Wan just as he says "before the Empire."

Following all of that will be the rest of the scene as Obi-Wan explains Anakin's death to Luke, which of course leads in to the BigMigMaker.

I'm spending time learning the limitations and abilities of the software available, so updates may not come quite so frequently, but rest assured, the project continues.

Hmm...I also have an Idea.
With hold putting the masking scene of DV from III to the end of ROTJ, when vader is dieing, or when hes being cremated.

That's an outstanding idea! Then you could focus on the "meat" of the PT, and get rid of the fluff.

I'm planning on using some cut of the masking scene/birth/rebirth scenes when Obi-Wan finally tells Luke the truth on Dagobah in the scene from ROTJ. Part of it will be shown with voiceovers. Some of it will be done via straight flashback scenes.

Okay, since the question has been asked, I'm taking a break for a few days to keep my eyes from buggin out of my head as I stare day after day at the screen in Photoshop. I'm painting Dooku out of one of the scenes, one frame at a time, and the toughest part will be maintaining some semblance of the action that takes place in the background behind Dooku in the far window to the outside. Vader will then be inserted in his place, giving us Vader (from ANH), Obi-Wan, and Anakin (both from ROTS) in the same four and a half second sequence. Not a lot of time, I know, but considering the learning curve involved, I need to take this slow and not screw it up.

I can only hope the end result of this entire scene will be worth the process I'm trying here. Depending on how well this works, I might use similar techniques for adding Vader into more sequences in Dooku's place. Wish me luck!

GOOD LUCK!!!!

This is an awesome project!

This project makes possible something that I never considered before -- a TRUE sequel to Star Wars-- one which actually flows into the first release 1977 movie without violating anything.

For me there are TWO Star Wars-- the first release movie as a stand alone "adventures of Luke Skywalker" and then there's the SAGA, which is 6 movies about Anakin. Since Lucas didn't decide to make Vader into Anakin until the 3rd draft of ESB-- there's a lot of stuff that doesn't quite fit. Most of all, Obi Wan is really lying through his teeth when he tells Luke what happened to his father. That just doesn't fit with who Obi Wan was when I first saw the movie as a little boy.

But with the "migraine maker" and the rest of the PT footage, a movie (NOT this project, I realize) could be made that was a totally faithful sequel/prequel to the first movie.

I can't wait to see how your ideas pan out, DemonHunter.

hey demonhunter do you intend to edit like a trilogy or more like the scifi channel dune mini series.
you know you could possabliy use chapter cards like in the dune ini series ,
for instance cut out the anh credits and after the award cermony fade to black it will switch to empire strikes back the 2nd film will be split in half so anh and esb part1 on disc 1 and esb part2 and rotj on the second disc.
heres two chapter cards i just made ther're 30 second hit and run photoshop jobs
what ya think could you use something like this???!!!!!!! ??????

The plan is for a trilogy of edits, complete with flashbacks for each.

Each movie will be a cut-down version of the corresponding Episode from the OT. I'll be using footage mainly from the SE, as well as from Darth Editous's edit of ANH as the basis for that episode. Flashback footage will come from the PT DVDs. I very briefly considered using some Clone Wars footage, while discussing this project with my roommate, but decided to keep everything purely live-action. Too many inconsistencies in introducing cartoon footage into what will otherwise be a serious project.

Thanks for the suggestion about title cards though!
