The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant — Page 12

Has anyone asked the question of why they fight in the first place? What were Rey’s motivations to attack Kylo and subsequently stab him to death? I felt nothing during this whole sequence, it felt so contrived it was as if they where trying fill a mandate (“gotta have a big lightsaber battle!”)

The movie is like a John Tesh cd, too many crescendos and climaxes and not enough melody and song.
Lightsaber battle - check
Emperor - check
Cliche lines - check
John Williams score - check
Trip to Tatoointe - check
Space battle - check
(jj era) lens flare - check
(jj era) cameos of people from the directors earlier work - check
(jj era) a hundred poorly executed ideas instead of 2-3 good ones - check

While John Williams has been a consistent architect of music for these films I think that some of these sequences would be better served with no music, just the fight and the sounds of the world around them. Sometimes less is more.

The death star battle is the last big duel of the trilogy and saga, i don’t think that is ok for it to not have soundtrack or to have a score less memorable than duel of fate

Other thing that bugs me, and would like to know if is possible to fix in the edit.

In TFA when the option to sell BB-8 becomes available, she looks sad and refuses to sell the droid because she KNOWS that she was sold. Her parents, selling her to a slaver because they “loved her and wanted to protect her” sounds bad and not only is pretty cliche, it also feels jarring with the ending of the movie.

So Rey decides to take the skywalker name and act like the skywalkers are her family forgetting about the parents that she just discovered actually “loved” her and sacrifice their life for.

Rey palpatine’s would feel less jarring with the previous films if her parents were actually selfish and actually sold her from drinking money.

Having a truly dysfunctional family, would make “Rey Skywalker” and the message of deciding one’s path and family, more meaningful and would keep the weight of the revelation in TLJ for the most part intact.

The message of “bloodline doesn’t define you” doesn’t have any weight when her dad was the direct son of sheev and was a “decent” and “good” person.

This 100%. The fact that Rey’s parents already chose to forsake their dark heritage undermines Rey’s arc BIG TIME.

I’d think it’d be a lot easier to remove Rey Palpatine and Rey’s Virtuous Parents in one fell swoop.

I really don’t know. Forgive me if I let this thread out of my mind for a while until we’re a little closer to being able to actually do much with it.

And like I said, I anticipate being a glorified figurehead for this, aiming to produce a “well, here you go” version anyone else can run with themselves. My point is: I doubt it’s gonna be me that comes up with any of the good ideas, not the least reason being a super busy home and work like to juggle.

That’s very understandable. I think a lot of others will do the same. Let’s hope that we will get a lot of deleted scenes come the film’s home release. Maybe even deleted scenes from the others in The Skywalker Saga 4K box set, considering that there’s about 27 discs included.

I think this score would fit perfectly into the rey and kylo Ren fight on the second death star. I hated how there was no big score it was just the waves crashing by. It needed its own Orginal score but this is a good compromise.

Lol I was thinking the same thing. I just wish the mashup wasn’t so trailer-y. You know, over-the-top epic that builds up.

‘Heir To The Jedi’ Duology
I digress. As I said, I think a TFA-TLJ duology is greater in total than a TFA-TLJ-TROS trilogy. The only thing that would make that feel weird is the trilogy structure the audience expects. As an absolute minimum, all one would need to do is either do away with the opening crawls (and finding another way to set the story and political landscape up for TFA), or replace their “Episode” labels with something like “DUOLOGY TITLE - Part I - THE FORCE AWAKENS.”

WOW , that is an extreme measure! i loathe TROS (is reductive , uninspiring and dumb) and love TLJ, but i don’t think that TLJ would work as an finale, is too open ended, with questions as:

  • “What happened to kylo? he just stayed bad and died offscreen?”
  • "knights of ren that we saw in TFA whats up with them " (they did nothing in tros, but at least they were there) - “how would kylo act as the supreme leader” (we see a little of that tros, not much but a little)
  • “What did rey do with those books?”
  • “is hux going to betray kylo at some momment?”
  • “what is going to happen between kylo and rey, with the new status quo”

If you want you can make massive alterations to TROS (no rey palpatine, no palpatine, no jannah or zori, sith troopers being under kylo’s command), but i don’t think that dropping TROS altogether is viable.

although i would prefer for an improved TROS over that, enjoying a fan edit so different to the actual movie , gives me the sensation of enjoying something that is not real, the sensation of indulging in a headcanon.

I’m not dropping this project, just exploring the possibility of another which probably won’t be followed through with.

The cleanest achievable option to answer some of your questions, darkshadowspike, might be to make the new ‘Final Order’ fleet something created and manned by Sith cultists managed by the Knights of Ren, at Kylo’s command - which could be covered in the crawl. That gives him something to do as Supreme Leader, some significance to the Knights (while explaining their absence), and avoids the need for Palpatine.

But you can’t say that in the crawl if you want to avoid revealing Palpatine, right?

It’s for a hypothetical edit where Palpatine is cut completely, and Kylo is the main villain of the movie. I have similar plans for my upcoming edit.

My preferred saga experience:
TPM/AOTC/ROTS (Hal 9000), ANH/ESB/ROTJ (Despecialized), The Mandalorian,
TFA (Starlight), TLJ (Fallen Knight), TROS (Resurgence).
May the midichlorians be with you.

At the beginning, what if Rey was trying to commune with Luke (change the reference in the crawl)?

Preferred Saga:

4/5: Adywan
6: NSP
7/8: Hal9000

I’m guessing that in the following years, there will most likely be an up-storm of edits of the Sequel Trilogy like there were for the Prequel Trilogy.

I actually liked the Rise of skywalker, the main problem with this film is pacing. It feels like it needs to speed rush the setup because The Last Jedi doesn’t leave the story open for a finale. I don’t know how you could fix this issue, you could try to shuffle scenes from the trilogy around. The load JJ Abrams had for this film was a big one he had to set up and finish the trilogy in one film.

Right now people are down about, which I understand completely.

I myself am hopeful because of the Prequel trilogy and their edits. I LOVE Hal’s prequel edits, I actually probably watch those the most now since there is a charm about them and the edits really cut out the junk in them. They are watchable, where before, there were just SOOO many cringy moments.

So I am hopeful for the sequel movies, Hal’s Restructured is great. I also enjoy Poppa’s Rekindled edit.

TROS will be a tough one due to the overall plot, not just cringy moments and dialogue. But I think it can be done to at least be entertaining.

Do NOT self-destruct!

Some posts have been deleted which were nothing to do with Hal’s proposed Edit - and instead just talking about the film in general - plus whatever people want to knock Disney for their apparent faults / choices for the Episode IX.

Lucasfilm must likely be quite relieved when they get a free pass / that so little criticism comes their way.

A quick reminder that the Star Wars Preservation and Star Wars Fan Edit sections of the site are NOT the places to bash on certain eras or aspects of the films, actors, film-makers or owners.

There are far more relevant threads in the Beyond the Original Trilogy or General Star Wars Discussion sections of the site to talk about this.

Critiquing a scene in the Star Wars Fan Edits section with the aim of improving it, removing it, altering it etc is perfectly fine. Statements such as ‘Disney sucks’ and ‘this film is so shit no Fan Edit can save it’ is not.

Thank you.

Okay, I’ll ask again since my post was deleted.

Have you considered removing the idea that Luke and Leia already knew that Rey was a Palpatine? That was one of the dumber retcons for me and causes some logic issues with the last film.

I’d be in favor of removing this too, but, devil’s advocate here, it doesn’t necessarily create any issues with the last film. If Luke cut himself off from the Force, he wouldn’t know Rey was a Palpatine until he reconnected.

I had a thought today about a potential edit.

When Ray is about to axe palps, what if we could rotoscope in Mark Hamill from the last Jedi scene (when he says see you around kid just before disappearing) color him to look like a force ghost and place him in between Ray and the Emperor within the energy feedback loop?

It would be a good visual of Ray being assisted by the last person to actually bear the name skywalker, and would be a satisfying payback is a bitch moment for Luke. He helps barbecue the guy who tried to do the same to him.

Just a thought.

In an early ROTJ draft, images of the ghosts of Ben and Yoda flashed while blocking lightning from Luke. It’s an idea I’ve considered for this, and you could expand it to include quite a few different Jedi. But I don’t know if that might feel like beating a dead horse after the voices. And I think it’s important for Rey to have the final word.
