Ideally footage where ships whoosh into frame from either the side or behind, for panning audio.

I think someone had sent in a recording “For Mandalore,” so I should try to find it. Like I said, send in a bit more of that sort of thing, guys!

And if anyone with more time or skill than I would like, I welcome some 5.1 audio with panning audio to hear ships coming from the rear channels and transitioning into the front, synced to the footage or not.

Quick question Hal,

What’s the image quality like for that extended spaceship shot? I can’t imagine it being any good, especially seeing how it’s been taken straight from Vimeo… It’s not like it’s one of the deleted shots from the Bluray. 😕

^ I think it looks pretty okay. Doesn’t stand up to tough scrutiny, but that shot in particular looks pretty sharp and good to my eyes.

Here’s a version I like a little better, including Wedge instead of the tail end of the shot, breaking up multiple shots of a bunch of ships and allowing the music not to be cut up.

I wonder if maybe reintroducing the Wedge shot at the end could let us cut away from the extended shot right before it gets particularly problematic from an audio perspective with the squadrons.

And Poe can still say “hit those underbelly cannons” via comm.

It would make sense to keep that line, it served to remind the audience of the “shoot the cannons = ships blow up” plan at the point where it comes to fruition.

And like I said I like the small Wedge cameo paired up with all the other ship cameos and all the other voice comm interactions. I hope it can be worked back in.

Agreed! The battle was severely lacking in cameos so I’d hate to see one get cut out 😕

Kinda sad Wedge is only pilot we see, wish we had a couple more cameos during that scene

That’s a +1 for keeping Lando. That new clip is pretty great Hal!

Here’s my latest attempt at the Pasaana sequence.

Moving the Star Destroyer scene to after they meet Lando feels so much more like Star Wars to me.

That said, I’d be curious to know if you think the move is worth it.

I also added a couple growls from Chewie that just helps to make that whole sequence less awkward.

I actually like this a lot ziggy! I distinctly remember the abrupt pace of this sequence was very noticeable to me during my first viewing. Even if Hal decides not to use this for Ascendant, I would definitely like to use this in a future Rey Nobody edit.

That’s pretty good! I’m not sure it’s totally believable for the trooper not to recognize these characters at this point, so it could be all right to leave the dialogue as it was. Lando kills him before he can report back or alert anyone else.

EDIT: Actually, the original line features him reporting back! Well, the first part can stay, just “hold it right there.”

That works a lot better, only thing that needs smoothing out is the audio transitioning but good job, hope It makes it into Ascendant, hopefully theres some more scenes where this can be pulled off, the more changes the better as long as they fit.

I’m not sure if this has the same impact. While I was timing the audio for the Fleet voices, I kept getting chills at how the “For Skywalker!” shouts come in right after Poe and RIGHT on the high note of the music. This drawn-out shot doesn’t hit the same way. It’s definitely a cool shot visually, but it’s missing the Oomph we had before.

I agree; the way your arranged them really fit what was there.

Perhaps a portion of the shot could be used only to cover the last part of the Poe shot where he says “every one we knock out is a world saved.” And leave the timing how it was.

Definately use the extended ILM shot adds so much with as small as it is. The only line I didn’t like was “We believe in you Poe” to be totally honest just doesn’t work, nothing against the person who recorded it just wasn’t right taste for scene imo. Think it would be better as something else or removed entirely, they kinda just shouted over music beat too.

Looking at battle of Exegol sequences think it could work better to focus on Poe, Jannah and Finn taking down the star destroyer tower first instead of cutting back to Palpatine and Rey constantly, found a smooth way todo so Resistance stuff first then go to Rey and Palpatine with no cuts makes the scenes feel a lot longer and less choppy.

So I’m watching the workprint again and wanted to bring up another scene that could use another look, Hal.

Near the beginning of the film, I noticed that you had to cut out a good chunk of the argument between Rey and Poe upon their arrival back at base. This is because they talk about lightspeed skipping, which has been cut from the fanedit.

The only problem is that this setup is a little awkward because, as a result of this cut, Finn appears out of nowhere standing next to them, and Rey doesn’t even acknowledge him.

So I played with this some just to see if there could be another option. The best I could come up with is simply moving their spoken dialogue around and try to match it with their mouth movements best I could. It’s far from perfect, but they’re arguing loud enough that the casual viewer may not even notice.

Take a look and see what you think:

Again, not perfect, but this might make more logical sense than having Finn apparate. It also just feels a little smoother, I think.

Also, I’m still traveling so the quality isn’t great, but hopefully you get the idea.

Hmm, I don’t know. I think there’s no real continuity issue, as Finn can approach the other two from offscreen easily in that timeframe. Apologies because I can’t remember who off the dome, but someone has the idea to add a few faint footstep sounds to imply Finn is walking over even. The clip you posted, and granted that I’m watching with a hawk eye, feels edited as the dialogue doesn’t match their mouths, especially Rey calling out Poe’s name.

I dunno, I think what we got so far is probably as good as that little scene is going to get.

Okay, so here’s this. We can certainly give Poe a line or two from video games or whatever, and add a few more hollers from people sending in audio.

Y’know, things like “let’s give 'em hell!” and “ASS!”

https://vimeo.com/457355065

I still think that kid shouting “we believe in you Poe” is too loud, lol.

Noted. I want to mail down the ‘blocking’ of the little sequence before I get into the grittier audio aspects. Does it feel right to have the extended shot play over what used to be a cutaway to Poe, then play out the equivalent duration longer?

Axlanian did a great job mixing the cries and yells to the old blocking of shots, so I’m wondering if it feels right to have a couple whoops, Poe can say something vague about “wow let’s go” and then a couple “For Skywalker”s at the same point in the music as before, followed by a bit more enthused chatter.

I would much rather have the entire shot with a voiceover from Poe in the middle. The way he’s spliced into that shot in the original movie is poorly done

Does the walking sound help? I couldn’t see I’d there’s better sound clips.

Hello, this might be the wrong thread to write this in but I recently got a blu ray burner to rip my rise of skywalker blu ray for editing purposes, and downloading ascendant on my new MacBook to do edits with them on iMovie/final cut pro, and I wanted to ask if anybody here had any advice on converting mkvs to mp4 because for some reason every time I try to do it, as soon as I load the movie into iMovie/final cut pro the audio is normal but there is a descriptive audio track along with the normal movie audio. I’m using vlc to do this, and I just wanted to ask if anyone knew how I could change my approach to this or if there’s another app I could use to convert the files successfully.

Not the right thread, but I’d recommend Handbrake. Do the highest setting, switch to constant frame rate, and choose 23.976 or 24. You can also choose audio formats and such, can’t remember what it defaults to.
