Isn’t that Jar Jar’s motif? When I hear that I remember him feeling petty okie day after his brisky mornin’ munchin’.

I think that little scene is better without music. In this movie, having points like that to just have a little gag outside the main action without music helps a little to slow the pace. I hope I’m not being petty but I think it was a good call not to score that moment in the first place.

By no means do I know what I am doing, that theme was for Jar Jar, R2/3PO. I just appreciate John William’s music more than anyone. Feels like a big miss on this edit that not much is being done music wise in my opinion not saying things should be rescored just more could be implemented, this is honestly the best Rise Of Skywalker edit out there.

I appreciate the motivation of adding music cues, but I do agree with Hal, in that music is pretty much associated with Jar Jar and mesa got some bad vibes from dat.

Although I can appreciate music cues, but it shouldn’t be used “for the sake of filling in gaps.”

Limiting/not having music cues/notes/sounds/etc. is just as important as using them. It’s a balancing act.

Do NOT self-destruct!

Hello everyone. I am very interested in this project. I read through a lot of the 200 so pages. but it is a lot. LOL.

How much of this project is finished? It sounds very cool?

Yeah, just look at Empire Strikes Back for an example of that. Almost the entire movie was scored by John Williams originally, but quite a bit of the music was removed in post, just because the scenes sounded better with no music.

Take the duel between Luke and Vader, for example. Here’s the scene with the original music score:

And here’s the scene as it is in the movie:

Although the music is good on its own, it doesn’t fit the tone of the scene, and it’s just more tense with no music.

Yes, that’s a good example of what I mean! I don’t mean any offense to Cinefy whatsoever. I just don’t share a specific goal of wanting to add prequel music throughout, so I’m going to decline anything that doesn’t seem like a slam dunk. But y’know, if Cinefy would like to do an alternate audio track with any or all of those ideas, I can send him the audio output once the edit’s sync is locked.

And this project is waiting on a few things from a few people, and that may take some time, but that’s pretty much it! Once I have those things I will do a color pass using skenera’s LUTs and get all the other stuff ready. That may take some time in its own right. I’m not sure about the commentary. It will be difficult for me to find dedicated time out to record even a solo commentary, let alone coordinating a group one. I might have to just do a solo one in chunks. I’m tempted to just skip it!

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I’ve never seen that before. I kinda love the music being over the scene (even though the overall film needs that scene to not have music). It changes the tone in a fascinating way.

Those few people include the scenes for the Nobody version or those parts are already done?

Good question. The regular version is waiting on a few things, then will be released. After that, whenever the needed scenes are completed by others, the Rey Nobody cut will be completed.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I just happened to notice that this thread now has a little over half the number of posts as Adywan’s 14 year old ANH:R thread.

That’s pretty fucking crazy.

EDIT: Me when I show off clips of this project IRL: https://youtu.be/Nv-FcxlEMaw

I think it would be a good idea to do another WP and call it a day until whatever odds and sods are produced to call it done. Quite honestly the thread has devolved into change/tweak things for the sake of changing/tweaking things.
A point of demarcation may be useful…this is it and the final thing will be if/when this that and the other thing exist, otherwise done.

Totally agree! It would be nice though to see a de-blued Luke ghost until Jonh finishes giving him his haircut.

Yes, I can’t wait to see a de-blued Luke! A while ago, I had strongly advocated for Bobson Dugnutt to tackle that task, but it seems like the responsibility has fallen onto Jonh quite strangely according to the OP… So I don’t know who’s actually doing it. It seems like Bobson is already pretty busy working on multiple prequel projects at the current time, so he might not finish it.

For reference, here are his early demonstrations:

I wasn’t being precise; if Bobson wants to apply the de-blue work to a future clip from jonh, that’s fine! If jonh doesn’t do it himself in the process.

I could do another workprint, hopefully as a ‘sync-locked’ version in order to get the peripheral stuff done.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I hadn’t seen those de-blued Lukes before! Looks wonderful

  • Kylo frees himself of the oppression of his Master Snoke, except now he just works for another evil mastermind.

Except the way I see it, not really. Palpatine never formally takes him on as an apprentice. It’s more of an equal alliance of two people who wanna kill each other and know it. I think we should lean to this more by removing the implication that Kylo is following the Emperor’s orders by finding Rey. By leaving out Palpatine telling Kylo to bring Rey to him, maybe we could imply that Kylo is seeking her out out of his own free will so she can help him take out the Emperor.

That’s part of why I introduced Palpatine so much earlier, it recontextualises his desire for Rey to join him in TLJ. It also makes us question where Kylo is, mentally, throughout TROS… making his return to Ben more fleshed out.

But if they wanted to preserve their own lives, couldn’t they just send droids to lightspeed ram ships? Droids have already been established as being intelligent enough to pilot ships on their own, so why couldn’t they just send unmanned lightspeed missiles to blow up whatever threat was in their way?

Why don’t they use droid for all space combat? and ground combat for that matter? Why do any humans ever have to be involved? Star Wars defeated with facts and logic.

As for introducing Palpatine, Jake, I’m gonna be honest, that’s a really dumb idea. His introduction fits perfectly as a cliffhanger ending to TLJ. Leave it at that.

I like this placement for Vader’s Castle, but that’s purely for shot composition. Are there any other shots where it’d be visible?

I feel pretty settled about the level and method of including DOTF in the duel. It’s noticeable but subtle, brief, and leads into existing music after a gap with no score.

Could you post a link to it? I think Battle of the Heroes would be more fitting to emphasize the water/lava parallel.

In terms of music, while I do agree we shouldn’t add it purely for the sake of filling gaps, I think that as a finale this film ought to have lots of musical callbacks. The Original music has been aped to death but we need some good Prequel sprinklings in there.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, I was just trying to show how your otherwise unaddressed nitpick was solved with that change. 👍🏻

I don’t expect Hal to change it, but moving it to the other side of the credits between acts 2 & 3 doesn’t fix the issue of a random deus ex machina being added for the villains, for me. It also doesn’t fix your issue with wanting to portray Kylo more clearly not serving Palpatine.

The current workprint has the short duel of the fates added.

I will work on a last workprint. It won’t have the saber crackle sounds, so as to be coherent with the lack of crackling saber visuals for right now.

This will serve as a sync reference so that chapters, subtitles, and commentary track can be done during the wait for the last few things.

There’ll always be more ideas, but the main ones that have emerged and been vetted have been implemented and will serve as a solid base upon which anyone can build.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Hey, Hal. I understand the many changes and things that can be done, I get it. But hopefully we can make fan editing fun rather than being like work for you. It should at least be something to enjoy and not put stress on you. Hopefully there is something we can do about that to help you in some way.
