Not to speak for Hal but this feels like a continuation and conclusion of his own ST edits in and of themselves, not necessarily the theatrical versions. Which I think everyone is doing a fairly good job of respecting thus far.

I agree on that.

Agreed. Honestly these edits are attempting to be more connected than the actual theatric versions.

We’ve certainly augmented a few things in light of TLJ, but I do not share the appraisal of TROS ignoring TLJ. It clearly wanted to retcon some stuff, though.

The best example is poppasketti’s change for this project to tweak a Kylo Ren line. Rather than telling Rey, “I never lied to you,” he says, “You were right.” Because, in TLJ Kylo never told Rey her parents were nobody. She did. It rings more true this way.

Another is removing the idea that Leia (and, more puzzling, Luke) somehow knew Rey was granddaughter of Palpatine. TLJ seems not to leave any room at all to suppose Luke knew who she was. In this edit, we aren’t told when Luke found out, so I would think one would assume he learned it at some point after dying, and it doesn’t matter much by the time we see him on Ach-To with Rey.

Kewlfish’s crackling saber effect seems to add a layer of meaning to TLJ breaking the Skywalker saber.

Added comm chatter sort of implies that word of what Luke did on Crait has continued to play an inspirational role.

I’m sure there’s more that I can’t think of right now. About the only thing that has been done to TFA and TLJ in light of this movie has been to sprinkle in a few very subtle Palpatine hints. And I guess to partially reinstate lines about ‘cheating death’ from Palpatine in LOE.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been saying. TROS didn’t just “ignore” TLJ like so many people are saying, there were several references to the events throughout the movie:

  • The plot as a whole is only facilitated by Snoke and Luke being dead.
  • The Skywalker saber has clearly been taped together after it was broken in TLJ.
  • When Kylo has his vision, it plays some audio of Luke saying “Ben, no!” from TLJ.
  • Kylo can’t rebuild his helmet if it was never broken in the first place.
  • When Kylo talks to Rey on Passana, he says, “I offered you my hand once.”
  • When Kylo reveals the truth about Rey, he explicitly compares it to his earlier revelation about Rey’s junk trader parents.
  • Hux being the spy makes no sense without Kylo treating him like trash in TLJ.
  • When Rey heals Kylo, she responds to Kylo’s earlier statement, saying “I did want to take your hand.”
  • When Luke talks to Rey, he mentions the lesson he learned in TLJ, that it’s wrong to run away from your troubles.
  • When the Resistance is planning their attack, one of them mentions “Holdo manuevers”.

And that’s just the stuff I remember off the top of my head. Point is, someone who skipped TLJ and went straight from TFA to TROS would be hopelessly confused.
I agree that there should have been more thematic continuity with TLJ, though. Hal’s edit has been doing a wonderful job of that so far.

I think there’s an important balance to be found. It’s good that the three edits flow together well but IMO each one should be able to fit in fine with the other theatrical movies

Of course they couldn’t just ignore continuity and have Snoke and Luke be alive and such, but it basically does everything in it’s power to retcon everything TLJ set up.

  • Kylo frees himself of the oppression of his Master Snoke, except now he just works for another evil mastermind.

  • Rey has lost her Master Luke, the only one who could “show her her place in all of this”, except now Leia can suddenly train her when that was never considered.

  • Kylo destroys his helmet and let’s go of the past, except he still worships Vader’s helmet and puts his own helmet back together.

  • Rey was nobody, she had no part in this story, except she’s Palpatine’s granddaughter and her parents were killed by an assassin Luke and Lando chased across the galaxy.

  • The Skywalker saber has been split in half, except it was fixed off screen, it works perfectly fine and the previous damage is never mentioned.

  • The Holdo maneuver is a one in a million, Rose… etc. etc. etc.

Yeah, it kinda sucks. I can tell that JJ is a “by popular demand” sort of guy, always catering to the wishes of the angry internet fan base (or at least what he thinks are their wishes). His Star Wars movies seem pandering and safe at their core, and the story suffers for it.

So just a random question I had in mind that I probably already know the answer to. Many can conclude saying that The Rise of Skywalker is more of a continuation to The Force Awakens than it is The Last Jedi. Are we trying to make sure that this edit is a continuation of The Last Jedi? Personally, I feel that making it a sequel to Episode VIII is important.

Depends on what you consider to be a proper continuation from TLJ. I very much dislike most “creative” changes made in TROS, but it’s a Gordian Knot situation in most cases for this film, so you can’t really change all that much.

Use the Force, Jon Yowza.

“Rey Palpatine” is such an unearned retcon that goes agains’t one of the most important twist of TLJ, and that hurts the trilogy so bad, maybe JJ didn’t like the twist of “They sold her for drinking money” as so many people did, but retconning in that way is embarrasing, he should have been a professional and follow the story he was given.

Is like if in Return of the Jedi this happened:

LUKE: Master Yoda… is Darth Vader my father?

YODA: Mmm… rest I need. Yes… rest.

LUKE: Yoda, I must know.

YODA: Right you are, but only an evil clone of your real father Anakin Skywalker he is.

LUKE: No way!

“Rey Palpatine” is not just a poorly written predictable copy of “I’m just father”, it also confirms that only people with “strong bloodlines” with high midichlorians count can do important things or are important in the order of the galaxy.

It also doesn’t work in a character level… Rey doesn’t even know or care about the guy! Luke saw vader killing his mentor and chasing/capturing his friends before the reveal, that is why so hard for him.

Why is Rey afraid of going to the darkside because his lineage in TROS? HER FUCKING FATHER WAS A CLONE/DIRECT SON OF SHEEV PALPATINE AND HE WAS A GOOD PERSON ACCORDING TO TROS, LUKE SKYWALKER WAS THE SON OF DARTH FUCKING VADER … UGH…

This movie is horrible.

I tried to improve the Naboo shot: https://vimeo.com/445910295

It’s certainly promising. It still feel like it needs a bigger sense of scale by slowing down its movement and the speed of the smoke. I wonder how fast it’d have to be moving to have that apparent speed from the planet’s surface. I do like it a great deal, though.

Ship movement vs smoke movement doesnt match. Specially when comparing it to the falling ship seen after it. Smoke should maybe be rotated 15 or 20 degrees clockwise, and maybe enlarged vs the sip. The ship should be falling more vertically and less horizontally.

Edit- For Tatoine, https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/images/databank_jabbathehuttspalace_01_169_f7f5feb6.jpeg?region=0%2C0%2C1560%2C780 could use Jabbas palace. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/5196dd82e4b0ef02d1bb4fef/1450156472000-7VM6GWI7GTZXRZSW7DEJ/image-asset.jpeg?format=1500w&content-type=image%2Fjpeg (could remove droids using other frames where they move positions to stitch a new plate)

I do feel compelled to point out that Kylo makes it abundantly clear that he’s just using Palpatine for his resources and will almost certainly betray him at the first available opportunity.

KYLO REN: Palpatine wants you dead.

REY: Serving another master?

KYLO REN: No. I have other plans.

Everything in TLJ had foundation in TFA. Luke’s characterisation was hinted at in TFA, Rey searching for a connection desperately, etc. There was nothing that came about as fact in a major story development beat that affected who the characters were that was ignored or retconned.

Thats such a cool idea, adding Jabba’s Palace to the backround of Jawa scene on Tatooine would be a really nice addition highlighting all these important places in the Skywalker Saga.

I believe he meant Kylo recedes to his status in TLJ of trying to overthrow the big baddie and take his place while doing his bidding, instead of actually moving forward and acting like a “Supreme Leader”.

Hello There! long time lurker here… i just created an account to say how awesome everyone working in this edit is!
My friends and i were very disappointed with EP9, i hope that with this edit we could have atleas a decent finale to the saga.

Agreed, KK should atleast had Rian working along with JJ… that way both JJ’s “Crowd pleasing” and Rian’s “Experimental Indy” styles would have balanced each other…

Yes that twist was pretty dumb, i read somewhere that this edit, is going to have 2 versions one with mantaining TLJ Rey’s Nobody and the other being more faithful to TROS, both version are going to come out in the same time?

The Rey Palpatine comes first and then the Rey Nobody edit after it, timing wise of release.

If this edit has Vader’s castle in the background. I think it should have Jabba’s palace too.
