The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (SPOILERS) — Page 15

I agree, simply changing the dialogue at least keeps his motivations more ambiguous.

Author

I agree in principle. It would also fit in with Snoke-as-Palpatine-wearing-VR-headset, as he ordered the same thing before.

I see you are a man of culture as well.

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

I know you’re alluding to something, but I can’t remember where I got that exact phrase.

I don’t know how true this is, but one of the actors who played one of the Knights of Ren said they saw an ending where Rey dies and Ben takes on the Skywalker name. Could be false, but if true, there may be a very unlikely chance this ending makes the deleted scenes release.

It was confirmed false. That guy didn’t even play a Knight of Ren, he was making it up.

Why would Knights of Ren have even been there, anyway?

Of course. Thanks. 😃

I think it should be a priority to find ways to state or imply that Palpatine stashed many Star Destroyers from the days of the Empire, possibly manufacturing them to be stored in reserve. (Because having cultists on an unknown world building “the largest fleet the galaxy has ever known” by smuggling in parts here and there that are all identical to a specific model of a decades-old destroyer is reeeeeal dumb.)

And the manpower for these stashed destroyers come from the First Order which was ushered in by Snoke as a puppet.

It’s still convoluted, but that makes a great deal more sense at least.

I’m not sure how you could get this implication across in the film. Maybe in the crawl, instead of saying Kylo is searching for the source of Snoke’s power, he’s looking for the Emperor’s lost fleet. Maybe that’s what the Knights of Ren were doing during the last two films, looking for clues to the lost fleet of the Empire.

Dom had a good idea regarding ROTJ, to make Palpatine’s Star Destroyer have those same red stripes. We could even create a shot of the end of the film of it, and other Destroyers, leaving the battle. The blank screen in his throne room could be used of foreshadowing as well.

But yeah, just trying to make that change in Episode IX alone, I would say mentioning it in the crawl would be the the most straightforward way to do that. It almost might not be a bad idea to downplay its scale a little.

That approach would be great if doable.

Anyone friends with Ian McDiarmid to see if he shoot us some voice recordings?

…ok, maybe not.

Alternatively, could someone or something else talk about it? Like the generals in the war room. It seemed like they got the full run down about Palp’s and his ships … so someone in the background can make a quick comment or something?

“He had all those shipped built in secret for how long?!”

It’d be ambitious, but I don’t know if someone here would be THAT good to just film and insert themselves at one of the boardroom chairs to deliver whatever exposition we dream up.

Nah I meant like a voice over, someone making that comment behind the scene during a gap of speech.

Not ideal, but could be doable …

A quick example of how you can word it, based off the crawl from the first post:

“Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren seeks the rumored lost fleet of the Empire, determined to use it to end the war threatening his rule…”

If you want to rely on head canon, arguably the fact that they’re all ISD could imply by itself that they’re from his time as Emperor.

I think the official story, from material outside the film itself, is that the Sith cultists smuggles in garbage and made the fleet that way.

Just, yeah.

But you wouldn’t know that from watching the movie itself. Fan edits typically ignore supplemental material, so I don’t think it’s necessary to provide an alternate explanation in the movie.

My preferred saga experience:
TPM/AOTC/ROTS (Hal 9000 edits), ANH/ESB/ROTJ (Despecialized), The Mandalorian.
May the midichlorians be with you.

Yes, especially in this case. Supposedly they’re a brand new class call the Xyston-class. They’re basically the same as the ISD I, except they’re slightly bigger and have mini Death Star lasers.

If they look exactly the same, it is arguably less confusing if you imply that they’re old models that have been modified rather than brand new ships built in secret.

Restructured already contradicts canon by having Starkiller Base destroy Hosnian later in the film, so I don’t think changing a very unimportant detail about the origins of the ships that all blow up by the end of the film matter too much.

I feel like I have an argumentative tone, but it just because this was one detail about the movie that frustrated me.

I always assumed pre-TROS that the reason that the First Order was named the First Order would be revealed as it being literally the FIRST ORDER Palpatine gave (possibly secretly or at least not publicly). That is, his first command upon ascendance to the Senate was the provision of a secret army, much as Order 66 was a secret order of his designed to trigger the destruction of the Jedi at the appropriate time. This makes him much more of a game player, with real foresight and planning, creating backups for his various schemes. Around that time Palpatine would have had access to active shipyards, plus cloning tech (which would more easily explain his return). It wouldn’t, then, be a stretch to assume that he was behind both the active First Order fleet in the first two sequel films, and his even more secret Death-Star-enabled fleet.

Anyone here have the chance to read TROS: Visual Dictionary? It talks a lot about what has been happening on Exegol for the past few decades. I only read it once, but from what I remember, it’s not simply a matter of smuggling garbage onto the planet. I could type out what I remember but it would probably make the most sense for those who care to actually just read it for themselves.

Yeah, I’d settle for removing anything that would prevent headcanon from smoothing this out. One idea is to make sure the interior of those Final Order destroyers have personnel with First Order insignia.

My life is a nonstop, day-in and day-out stamina challenge and every day is full to the brim. I’ve got a lot on my plate and I’m exhausted across the board. And it’s not gonna change anytime soon.

I would find it personally liberating to sort of dis-commit to this project for now. I will get the disc ripped when it comes out and might be able to mess around here and there, but the project management and time involved in the whole thing would be overwhelming to me the way things are now. There would be weeks at times between opportunities to sit down and do any kind of meaningful editing work.

It would be much better for me to act more in a contributor role for this sort of thing, and I’d be happy especially to make particular changes and ensure the audio is done as well as I can get it. But it would be a big ask, I’m finding, to get me to see this through the way I have in the past.

I know morale is rightfully low about this movie, but unless anyone else wants to helm this I am going to do myself the favor of not promising anything in advance and seeing how it goes. I’m not already attached to a particular view for this movie or have any earworms for specific changes, so that’ll make this easier to set down or to accept a version from someone else.

I’ll finish up ROTJ since I’ve got it virtually complete beyond sprucing up the new video source with some help from Sir Ridley and/or DrDre and plugging it in. (And TFA:R v4 since it’s almost done, of course.)

I’m usually someone who gets possessed of an idea and follows through, but life’s circumstances are hell-bent against it, it seems like. It might actually be healthy for me in particular to support someone else’s project and set it down in my collection without having it be under my microscope. I can obviously still be counted on as a contributor, especially making a second attempt at editing audio together as an alternate ‘take’ to draw from.

Life comes first Hal! You’ve already produced your own versions of every other movie in the Skywalker Saga (and updated them many times). I imagine we’ll be seeing quite a few fanedits of this movie emerging in the coming months and years, of varying levels of quality, so if you do ever decide to return to this movie it’s probably wisest to leave it a good while for the dust to settle anyway so there’ll be plenty of ideas out there to build upon. There’s no rush - it’s Star Wars, it’ll still be relevant in another thirty years.

Thank you for setting the tone for responses; don’t make it harder for me than it already will be.

Yeah, your life and sanity take precedence, especially when we’re talking about a movie that quite clearly brings you no joy.

Take a step (or ten) back and let others tackle this one for the time being. Who knows, maybe something that someone else does with it will spark some inspiration for you to hop back into it - and if not, there will absolutely be plenty of options for people to choose from to follow TLJ: Legendary!

(Let’s be real, don’t all of us have a hodgepodge of edits from different editors as our own personal “definitive” sagas at this point, anyway?)
