V5 is now out. (It’s available on the Drive, and the other places will follow soon.)

Other than to eventually update the Rey Nobody version once the components from others are ready and available for that, this V5 marks the final update this project will receive.

That said, I am happy to make the lossless audio export available to all, and provide the ProRes output to those interested individually (because I can’t host it due to space limitations), so others can build further on it. But, I feel very much fulfilled by how this project has turned out. I do not feel like we were not able to do pretty much anything that we seriously considered and wanted to.

Once again, I cannot thank this community enough for the thrilling group effort this has been, and I consider it a wonderful capstone on the Hal9000 presentation of the main Star Wars saga.

Awesome! Such an exciting day. Thanks to everyone that contributed to this project. Most of the astonishingly cool stuff was from versions 1-4 imo.

I do believe that anything more added to this movie at this point would either have to be deleted scenes (provided they ever release) or would step beyond the goals of this project. Suffice it to say, we’ve definitely got a solid final product on our hands at last!

I hate to bring this up again, but it looks like the final color grade got applied to the Ahch-to scenes as well, unfortunately, turning Luke’s ghost red.

I did have to fudge things just a little since I had a convoluted workflow with it and layers, so when we added shots back in it would have been a lot to redo. I applied a LUT to this portion but only to a slight extent, and faded into and out of it. I looked at V4 to make sure it was in about the same neighborhood of look. Do you think it’s way far off the mark?

The V5 workprint is the only version I’ve seen that looks correct. V4 had that same incorrect red tint, which I assume comes from the final color grade but which shouldn’t be applied to the Ahch-to scenes. I imagine things are pretty complicated with all the changes and layers, but ideally there should be a layer in the timeline with the final LUT that is applied to the entire film except for the Ahch-to shots, and actually the Mustafar castle flyby and the Jakku shot should be exempted from the final grade as well, otherwise the highlights turn too red.

That might mean that those scenes (Ahch-to, Mustafar Flyby, and Jakku) should get their own layers above the final grade, or the final grade layer is trimmed to exclude those scenes, but either way the final grade would need to be done on the timeline for it to look right, and not applied as a final encoding step.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

^ It dawns on me, Nev, that for V4 I think you probably gave me that feedback and I thought “oh well I’ll just fix it for V5.” Then of course for V5 I said “I’ll just use what was in V4.”

Looking at both versions side by side, it did not look wrong enough for me to even question “oh yeah of course, we’re making this look like that because that is what it’s supposed to be.” The rest of the movie has efforts to make things look less blue-green, so I was probably in that mindset of less green meaning preferable.

Absolutely incredible work everyone! Who said that much attention to detail and OCD wouldn’t come in handy some day? 😉

Surely this has to be marked down as the greatest collab fanedit ever made? It’s definitely been a labour or love for so many but I bet you’re so glad to put it to bed now, Hal?

Do we have a list of all the changes for V5?

Hal, if you do end up re-releasing v5 to fix those color issues, you might want to take a look at the volume of Luke’s lines just over the training flashback part. They were pretty quiet and hard to hear, at least on my TV. The line about Leia’s legacy guiding her was perfect in volume, it was just the new lines that came before that one.

Leia’s “Come home” line was also pretty quiet, although I suppose that does fit the scene well enough.

I didn’t notice any other errors on my watch through of the whole edit. In fact the person I watched it with couldn’t tell what was AI or not, so that’s great!

I just downloaded v5 and was immediately struck once more by the magic of what you’ve done in this edit. You have taken a movie that I didn’t care about at all and made me excited to watch it over and over and to share it with others! Thank you.

The audio language is defaulting to Italian and can’t be switched as far as I can tell (this is if I stream it from Drive however, I don’t know what will happen if I download).

With previous versions, streaming on Drive it was defaulted to the commentary track for me, but when I downloaded them it was the main English audio track.

Well. It’ll feel even better once the Rey Nobody version is put to bed as well, but yes. 👏

I’m eagerly awaiting the Rey Nobody revision as well. Fantastic work on v5!
