Here’s how Nev’s line would sound in context of the scene (plus the file itself): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1sWvJn8utKM3o28BAUsqHhnz3nhWqDWOO?usp=sharing

Sounds good.

I just want to say how astonishing this AI voice tech is. A few years ago changing actor’s lines was an impossible pipe dream, and now we can just transform a film with it.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

It’s still limited by mouth movements. What we’re doing with this edit is only replacing lines where the character has a mask on or when they’re speaking from off screen. But we’re not far off from being able to change lip movements easily - be on the lookout for an AI software used for dubbing foreign films.

Yeah, I do have to admit it is quite shocking though. I never would have believed this would be possible even last year.

I was literally thinking last night, “Ugh, now I’m facing a V5; why didn’t we explore this idea before?” And was like “Oh yeah, it literally wasn’t possible before.” lol

I gotta say, I don’t love that particular render of the line, as it sounds sort of AI-crusty. But something like that, yeah.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

It is crazy to think about, isn’t it? Think about how many headaches we had trying to piece new dialogue together.

But I will say I am pretty happy with how things are now. We can change dialogue where it is narratively necessary for what we’re trying to do, and I think being limited by just off-screen or masked dialogue is a good creative constraint.

Maybe you should just considering revisiting the film for new versions every so often rather than we have a new batch of ideas we can implement. Just wait a year, then implement whatever new ideas are ready to go.

Yeah that’s much better. And yes, RL, I’m thinking I’ll wait until all the Rey Nobody stuff is ready and update both versions at once.

It’s a surprising amount of work to prep a release, with all the audio and subtitles that go into it.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

The original line wasn’t delivered that way, although I can understand why you might want the new one to be since it’s a sensitive topic. I think it’s important to keep in mind that the only unfortunate thing here is that Leia didn’t tell her - the good side to all of it is that Leia was only more encouraged to continue training her. So he shouldn’t really be that sad, ya know? It would be one thing if in the next sentence they’re talking about how Leia didn’t initially want to train her after learning this.

Hal, what is your workflow like since this edit has two branches; Rey nobody and the main edit? Are they two separate projects in your editor and you copy and paste changes from the main timeline to the Rey Nobody project?

Just curious. Thanks for all your hard work!

Sees talk of a V5 I will never be done rewatching TROS apparently. Real talk though, I’ve experienced V4 and overall? This is a marked improvement over V3, in particular, the AI lines. Some are still wonky here and there and definitely with headphones I can hear the shift but it is significantly more seamless. In particular, the Poe lines I criticized before now straight-up just sound like alternate takes they are that scarily good.

I’ll duplicate (copy and paste) the main timeline and then implement the Nobody pieces.

And yeah, the AI voices have compelled further work after I felt settled with V2 because the tech solved problems we didn’t think we could.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

In my opinion the only way you notice them is under both of the following conditions:

  1. You know exactly what has been changed.
  2. You’re watching with headphones on.

I’d say that’s pretty darn good, all things considered. I’ve seen stuff on Disney+ with significantly worse ADR - namely Secret Invasion.

I’ll post in this thread, but this shouout also goes to NeverarGreat and poppasketti for their work on Starlight and Rekindled - and everybody else involved these three movies.

I really liked TFA when it came out, was in disbelief when I saw TLJ in cinema and I had already given up the ST when TROS came out. I saw them once more a couple of years ago and… let’s just say I did not change my mind.

Then I saw your fan-edits this weekend and I have not been able to come around and comment on them before today, because I’ve just don’t know what to say. I’ve been in absolutely shock in the days after, of the astonishing work you all have done. I was enjoying the hell out of this!

You managed to take the ST-turd, put some glossy paper around it and I really thought I was eating chocolate while watching these movies. By the time the jedi ghosts appeared (holy f-ing crap, that was fantastic!) I was totally in shambles: I was sobbing and I apparently got a bit of allergic reaction because my eyes were getting mushy.

I have no idea about editing, so I can not really grasp all the hours, work and commitment you all must have been putting down to get this to be how good it is. And I really don’t know how I can express my gratitude towards everybody involved in making them.

So I’ll just make it very short: Thanks boys and girls, from the bottom of my heart - you made Star Wars great again. I’ll be forever grateful.

Faneditors - I salute you.

Hal, I’d also love a link to V4 and your other Sequel Trilogy edits. Thanks in advance!

Potentially loaded phrasing aside, thanks for the kind words. Always fulfilling to hear about these being enjoyed.

Exactly and to me, that’s the perfect circumstances. When the change I know is there but it’s so seamless that I know if I played the clip for someone on a TV and they had no idea it was a fan-edit and thus I could fool them into thinking it’s an alternate take? It’s been done right.

Here are my thoughts, ideas, and wonderings about V5 at this point.

  • Mute a few lines right after the swirling Knights of Ren photoshoot, just to let things breathe a moment

  • Including Rey reacting to Leia having known her dark heritage secret, but using a new line to imply she learned or sensed this sometime after TLJ

  • Anything else we can do about the dagger? And I wonder about reinstating it being depicted as her parents’ murder weapon; it was removed to allow for greater clarity that it can mystically reveal directions to the wayfinder.

  • Anyone else feel 3PO’s line “Terrible job, sir” was out of character? Wonder about maybe changing it to something like “Excellent job sir” … “Nobody’s perfect” or something. (Probably not.)

  • 3PO has one or two lines too many after the heroes fall underground. I’ll mute at least his last one of “we might still be.”

  • New lines for Zorri Bliss to give Poe backstory of having worked undercover, and to contextualize the fighting on Kijimi as related to Luke’s inspiration

  • And when arriving on Kijimi, I’d ideally like to replace some of the ‘Star Wars reference’ stormtrooper lines with lines that support the above recontextualization of the violence in the streets

  • Any ideas for the short exchange between the stormtroopers and 3PO?

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

We haven’t picked this back up since the new AI voice method was discovered. I believe we had some lines that we liked but couldn’t get it to sound right.

I realize this might not be a popular thought, but as I watched Ascendant with a ‘fresh’ mind the other day, I felt that it wasn’t quite clear enough in depicting how the dagger was leading Rey to the Wayfinder unless you were already aware of the behind-the-scenes change made for this edit.

Perhaps if some sort of effect was added to it, especially on Endor / DS2 it could be made more clear what’s happening. In the Clone Wars, when Savage Opress found Darth Maul, the necklace given by Mother Talzin functioned similarly to the way the dagger operates in Ascendant, however it had a clear visual effect on the necklace when he approached Maul.

I have to agree that this moment s a bit too vague for a first time watcher without background knowledge.

Since the movie has already established visions for Rey, maybe a short, flashy vision of the Death Star Throne Room could be inserted when Rey stands on the shore, preferably intercut with closeups on the dagger.

Maybe you could go even further: Show a vision of the Throne Room from RotJ when sje first picks up the dagger and then one from the present as she stands on the shore. The closer she gets physically, the closer the visions come to the present. That could be kinda neat.

And another idea: Maybe 3POs dialogue could be changed in a way that he explains (after his wipe) that the dagger has an inscription that also says something to the likes of “To the sworn guardian of the wayfinder”. This would imply that the reason it is leading to the wayfinder is so the guardian can track it down should it be stolen.

Are we able to generate lines for Sith 3P0?

“The Emperor’s wayfinder is in the Imperial vault. At delta 3-6, transient 9-3-6, bearing 3-2, on a moon in the Endor system. From the southern shore. Only this blade tells. Only this blade tells.”

“The Emperor’s wayfinder is in the Imperial vault. At delta 3-6, transient 9-3-6, bearing 3-2, on a moon in the Endor system. Give in to your darkness. This blade will lead you. Only this blade tells. Only this blade tells.”

If we wanted to make the dagger something ancient, and the description more generic, you could give it an inscription like this:

“To be worthy of the Wayfinder,
the final test for the great Sith secret,
One must wield this blade,
Sacrifice their light,
And embrace the call to the dark.
Only this blade knows, only this blade tells.”

On the Redux thread I mentioned the idea of adding intelligible whispers to the Sith whispering, so when she picks it up in Kylo’s chambers, maybe over the Sith whispering we can also hear a faint whisper of the word(s), “Endor… Death Star…” Perhaps Rey’s eyes could turn faintly yellow just to indicate Rey is tapping into the dark.

If you wanted to just show a flash of the Death Star, you could change the word “knows” to “shows” in the inscription.

And then, when Rey is standing on the cliff edge, and when she traversing through the Death Star wreckage, we hears specific whispers like, “Come”, “Follow”, “Here”, etc. It would be a nice touch if the whispers were coming from specific audio channels depending on the direction the Wayfinder is.

Well… now that it will be easy to generate a new line maybe we could have a fun callback to ROTJ?

Trooper: “Who are you?!

C-3PO: “I do believe I am some sort of… spy?

Trooper: “Then why are you… what?

@RogueLeader, I love the idea of changing the inscription altogether. It always seemed odd to me that it is an “Ancient Sith” dagger, but then when they read Ochi’s inscription he added to it, it reads like Google Maps instructions. “Take a left turn at Endor, go to this exact latitude and longitude.” 😄

The only issue with your version, is that Finn’s line right after is: “The Endor System… where the last war ended.” So, we need to have some kind of line that Finn can pick up on in order to say that.

Embrace your darkness, and this blade will guide you.
Follow its whispers and it will show you what you seek.
The dark path begins where the last war ended.
Only this blade tells. Only this blade tells.
