On the Just Rey vs Rey Skywalker front, one of the issues I have with Rey Skywalker is that I can’t help but read it as a metaphor for Disney buying Star Wars then tacking on their trilogy that wasn’t strictly necessary and saying “this counts as Star Wars”. That’s not to say I’m not glad we’re getting more Star Wars - I am - but it feels like a corporate mandate rather than something that was necessary to the story.

That totally may just be me, but Rey saying “I’m a Skywalker too” without necessarily earning it just maps directly to Disney saying “These movies are more examples of those Star Wars movies you love” in my mind - which doesn’t land well after TROS flubbing so hard.

Whereas ‘Just Rey’ maps better to the metaphor of “I have the support of what came before, but I’m something new and bold and I’m going to go in my own direction.”

Here’s my take on the Falcon shot. Lots of tweaks I still need to do, but this works as a proof-of-concept, I hope.

That looks fabulous. I agree with the others on the movement, and maybe it could be a bit bigger when it enters the frame, with a few tweaks it will be Perfect!

Since you mentioned the blue, is it not wierd that Luke was all blue on Achto but on Tatooine he’s just normal? I think that could be why I feel it looks a little off.

Hal, you’ll be happy to know that after seeing some of the Kylo Ren audio work DominicCobb was doing on his edit, I began warming up to the idea that perhaps a Rey nobody cut is possible to achieve!

In saying this, I was wondering what might be the complete list of lines, scenes, references, effects etc… That might need to be cut or altered in order to facilitate a Rey nobody edit?

Yes the model in snooker’s take looks more solid and realistic, and the angle and speed of departure looks more natural in poppasketti’s.

As for the Falcon stuff, I agree with everyone else. Poppa’s is the better movement and Snooker’s model is better. A merge (aka collaboration) I think would finish that nicely. I’m digging it!

Also Jonh, looking good with your Force Ghost stuff, adding BEN at the end is looking really good!

The Falcon as the final shot will absolutely be welcome, and it looks like that will inevitably be perfected by Poppasketi and Snooker. (Sorry for capitalizing your names.)

Ben’s ghost is similarly shaping up nicely! I agree about the lower body feeling like Luke’s, but its sound overall. It really feels like Adam Driver changed his clothes and became a redeemed Ben in that moment!

DOTF music. I’m not totally sure I’ll go that route, because it doesn’t feel diegetic. I wonder if the piece has been recorded again aside from what’s on the album, which we’ve all heard a million times, just to feel a little different.

You guys are the absolute best, and I’m very pleased to be “MC’ing” another one of these projects. My computer is old, and FCP7 barely runs on it at all. It’s an extremely cumbersome process demanding a great deal of patience in order to do anything. This project will run it into the ground for me, but I will leave the door open for the OT because I should be able to just rebuild the video stream using whatever sources are good at the time and leave the audio.

And about Rey Nobody. I expect that I will probably end up putting out a Rey Palpatine version and a Rey Nobody version. Feel free to devise your own mechanism for having your video player randomly select one in order to surprise yourself when you watch.

Here are the scenes or pieces that would be affected, unless I miss any:

• Opening crawl (I think it’d be cool to have the Rey Palpatine use the title font seen in TFA and TROS, and Rey Nobody to use the one seen in TLJ)
• Palpatine’s little fingertip lightning crackle during the opening, and tease of “she is not who you think she is”
• Rey’s use of lightning (changing it to yellow helps distance her from Palpatine, and will probably be used even in a Rey Palpatine version)
• Kylo and Rey fighting in his room (“I know the rest of your story” scene)
• The hangar (“You’re his granddaughter.” This one needs to have something dramatic enough not to feel hollow)
• Palpatine’s side room opens as Rey approaches (probably not a super big deal; it’s not like biometrics just let any relative pass)
• Rey and Kylo’s conversation just before their duel on the Death Star references an apparent failure of Rey to demonstrate her goodness to Leia and demonstrating “something else.” This could work in a ‘Rey killed her parents’ edit, maybe.
• Rey talking with Luke (Dominic handled this. It’s a little unfortunate that Luke sits down only to stand right back up, but it works okay)
• Rey and Palpatine meeting (should be easy to handle through just deleting lines)

Having Rey kill her parents would fill the dramatic void left by her evil heritage, shown through visions and maybe even Rey saying to Finn “I killed my mother… and my father.” She tells Kylo Ren she knows what she must do when he reveals this, which I would think should lead into her self-exile rather than continuing the mission of trying to get to Palpatine.

It’s a good idea, just making sure it can be implemented effectively in a fan edit. It really brings the whole ‘ruling together on the throne’ upward, making them equals in patricide and making the audience feel Rey’s fear of her own darkness. It also extends a bridge to make Kylo Ren’s redemption more worthwhile. Hmm… I’m coming around on it.

Guys, I have so many barriers to actually doing anything creative with this whole thing, at least inside my NLE. Your mockups and things are immensely helpful with this. If we hash things out and have a plan, i can absolutely take time when I can find it to enact them in my NLE, making it all smooth and integrated.

And I’d be down for a roundtable commentary track recording! lol

Glad that you’ve come around to this.
Rey going into self exile after the reveal makes more sense in this narrative and would help the film of the film, problem is that I don’t see how we could make it work. First problem is that she arrives on Achto in Ren’s Tie, Second is that you’d have to cut the death star scene since she takes Ren’s Tie to Achto, and you can’t have the transition of her leaving the death star to her traveling to Exogol since she uses Luke’s X-Wing in the latter.

I don’t think re-ordering the scenes like that can work, and that’s part of my point. Rey killing her parents is… an interesting idea and could have worked if they’d made the movie that way. But I’m vetting it as a realistic option to pursue in an edit desiring to feel totally theatrically viable in a parallel universe.
