I had also thought to suggest showing the TFA duel in the vision, reframing it to imply she unknowingly used the dark side to defeat Kylo. I do think using the Sith eyes would be a bit too on the nose, unless this was a follow-up to Starlight. I think it’d work to just show Rey striking Kylo down paired with Luke’s “You went straight to the dark”, then followed by a shot of Rey falling down the dark side hole and/or inside the cave.

Other ideas:

Use Finn’s “Noooo!” from Chewie’s ‘death’ to begin the vision, similarly to the way baby Rey’s worked originally, or Finn yelling “Rey!”, though that’s become a bit of a meme.

Incorporate Obi-Wan’s line “you will be tempted by the dark side of the Force” which could be faintly heard in Rey’s TFA vision (maybe keep it equally faint and echoey).

Use Kylo’s line “You’re still holding on! Let go!” as we see the lightning blast from Rey’s hand (it’d probably be better to leave “join me” instead, to keep the parallel to Kylo’s vision and set up all the talk about holding hands, but maybe both could fit?).

I really like all of this, especially the idea of re-using the TFA duel.

I mean, yeah, it is dumb. But I think the idea is that the bad guys are defeated by the people they’ve used and abused. Rey healing the serpent inspired BB-8 to give some of his energy to D-O, and that act of kindness gave the heroes an unexpected advantage.

Honestly, I’d love to see someone replace D-O’s human (JJ Abrams) voice with some glitchy beeps and boops like a normal astromech droid would make. Especially when the droid just says stuff like, “sad” and “happy”. It’s not endearing.

That would be adorable - like you said, it’s not endearing for D-O to tell us that 3PO “dying” is “sad.” It’s like a laugh track in a comedy, but somehow even more inauthentic.

You know, thinking about it some more, I don’t necessarily hate D-O having information on Exegol; I hate how unearned the information is. They’re just moping around, and then D-O, off-screen, tells Finn, “By the way, I have all of this super valuable information, if you want it!” Maybe if R2 or BB-8 or someone had to repair D-O to unlock the information, it would explain why they’re just discovering it now. Heck, if Finn had just realized on his own that D-O might have this information saved, it would at least feel like something the heroes achieved, rather than something they were handed by the screenwriters.

EDIT: God, they can’t even be bothered to build up to the reveal at all. The hanging question is Finn asking D-O “What’s your name?” And then he goes running to tell Poe that D-O is the answer to their prayers. Why couldn’t he ask a question that’s relevant to Exegol?

It could be interesting if D-0 actually said something like, “I can help.” Like he/she voluntarily gave them the information once he/she learned to trust them (as opposed to how D-0 apparently felt about their former owner).

In this case, it could be useful to keep D-0 speaking English and just redub him. In that case, I could picture D-0’s voice being more like GLaDOS or the turrets from Portal.

EDIT:
In his scene with Finn, doesn’t D-0 ask where Rey is, and Finn says he doesn’t know. Maybe D-0 could say “Exegol” or “I know”, etc.

Or use excited beeps if you kept with the beeping idea, and Finn just turned around to look at him, then cut to next scene.

I like the idea of him speaking English but having a sound similar to the turrets from Portal. Would be a great way to keep him endearing while maintaining the English and making it feel just a little more Star Warsy.

You have to remove three Finn NOOOOs or REEEEEEYs to add one.

Thinking about this some more, a better option if you’re starting the vision with the TFA duel would be to use Finn’s scream when Kylo burns his shoulder. I think it’s a pretty recognizable yell which would setup the following visuals. In TFA it’s the first thing Rey hears after coming back to, it’s when we switch to her perspective so it’d be pretty fitting, and you avoid adding on to Finn’s signature REEEEYs & NOOOOs in the movie.

I love it! My only concern is that it seems like the shot of Evil Rey sitting on the throne is too frozen, maybe?

I like it! I still wish there was a way to get Luke’s “you went straight to the dark” voice line in there though.

If you do use the shot from Starlight you’d really need to give Evil Rey Sith eyes too throughout, otherwise I don’t think it really reads. I do think the shots you chose work very well, and I imagine you plan to play around with the audio as well.

The problem I have with the VFX of Rey’s Sith eyes in Starlight, is that they don’t really look like Sith eyes to me.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

They’re more subtle than Anakin’s in ROTS but I think they look fine, personally. I agree that the ideal would be to give the other shots of Rey in the vision Sith eyes to match, as well as the vision of herself she sees later.

Hal, I noticed in your workprint that you didn’t cut Palpatine’s line “She’s not who you think she is” and Kylo’s response “Who is she?”. I think this exchange doesn’t really have much payoff in the Rey nobody version and I would cut the lines as in Spence’s edit.

I also really liked how DominicCobb’s workprint shows a quick flash of Rey on the Sith throne in the hangar scene after Kylo reveals her destiny. It gives the scene some extra punch which I think helps with the “reveal” being less significant. Would you consider adopting this in your Rey nobody version?

I agree, the second I heard that line in the theater I thought “Ok so they definitely made Rey a palpatine”

Honestly, I’m not sold on the new clips. I get what you’re going for, but the TFA clip really only works in the context of Starlight - every other version of the film plays it as a heroic, “coming into her own” moment - and as much as I love Starlight, we can’t know for sure that other people will have seen it before watching this one. And then you have a quick shot of Luke, to which my gut reaction is “Oh boy, Luke Skywalker!” The context of Luke’s scene is lost; although you could probably solve at least the Luke problem by incorporating his “You went straight to the Dark” line. For the other clip, maybe that shot of her doing the overhead strike at the ed of TFA? She looks rather murderous there. Play Luke’s line across both clips.

Alternatively, just showing more shots of the future is always an option, I guess.

I think it works fine as is, but I too would probably switch the Rey close up for her attacking angrily or something.

I mean, it’s a vision. It can be different than what actually happened. We never see Rey actually sit on the throne, but we see it in the vision. It’s cool imagery that makes you think about what it means. Maybe making the Sith eyes much more prominent in this one shot might be helpful since it goes by pretty quickly.

And I do think Spence’s idea of hearing faintly Luke say, “-straight to the dark” might hammer the idea home.

I very much like this. Is there way to make Luke’s line a bit clearer though? Also, I think you can add on the second " LET GO!" part of Kylo’s line.

Re: Rey’s Sith eyes, canonically she was using the Darkside at that moment, the novelization makes that clear. So using it here, even in just a vision, is totally fine, imo.

I planned to use the full Kylo line, but I feel the last bit really doesn’t fit, and it gets muddled by/distracts from the big lightning blast. I feel “you’re still holding on” paired with the visuals and Luke’s line still gets the point across, that she’s “holding on” from her inner darkness. As for Luke’s line, I think the scream from Rey’s mom would need to be removed, so that should help make it sound clearer.

For comparison here’s a version with the full Kylo line, and Luke’s line made slightly louder:

That original one sounds great. I think the only thing that kind of hurts it is with nothing done to the Kylo line it kind of overtakes Kylo’s “Join me.” and thus kind of just sounds like a bunch of people are in a room screaming and fighting for attention. I think maybe if it had a minor vocal effect done to it since it is a vision it’d help it. The Luke line addition though works very well as does Finn’s scream from TFA.
