I wonder if introducing the idea in the crawl that all or certain systems are being silenced would help with the “making you think you’re alone” element.

“…by silencing any planetary system that supports their enemy.”

“…by cutting off any planetary system…”

“…by silencing communication between planetary systems that…”

Like I’ve said before, I would be hesitant to introduce “communications blackouts” into the story if we don’t have a satisfying way of showing that, or of resolving that. But I do really like the idea of changing “attacking” to “silencing.” You have the same thing, which implies that the First Order is trying to prevent a new alliance from forming (as opposed to “attacking” them in retaliation); but it’s not as specific or as mechanical as “cutting the telephone lines.”

I do agree with changing the third paragraph to imply Kylo is tracking down a rumored threat to his rule rather than a macguffin that would allow him to destroy any unspecified threats to his rule.

I also really like this angle too! Enough with the McGuffins, film lol. My only concern would be - if there were rumors in the galaxy about something that could challenge Kylo’s rule, wouldn’t the Resistance be all over that? It could change the tide of the war! Leia would have sent Finn and Poe to investigate the rumor directly, not rendezvous with some random informant. So we would have to word it very carefully…

So, perhaps something like this?

Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Flames of rebellion burn across the galaxy. As worlds rise, inspired by LUKE SKYWALKER’S sacrifice on Crait, the tyrannical First Order has begun silencing any planetary system that supports their enemy.

As Rey, sole heir to the Jedi, continues her training, General Leia Organa sends her brave agents across the stars to unite the disparate worlds in the name of Resistance.

Meanwhile, having sensed a new power rising in the shadows, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren has traveled to Mustafar, determined to quell any threats to his rule…

Episode IX
THRONE OF THE DARKNESS

But a mysterious message has been transmitted across the galaxy. A threat of REVENGE, rumored to be from the late PALPATINE!

I’m starting to think that you are just trolling at this point…

Key word: rumors.

The Resistance doesn’t believe it’s Palpatine at first. Hence why Poe says: “We’ve coded the intel from the spy, and it CONFIRMS the worst: somehow, Palpatine returned.” Implying they didn’t believe it was Palpatine at first.

Regarding Finn and Poe, neither of them are spies. Also, I feel like they have to do their own missions and stuff pre-TRoS, post-rumors/broadcast.

Regarding the silencing thing and preventing new alliances, then I don’t think there’d be any point in wanting to get more resources and make the FO a true Empire.

@sherlock I agree about the point not saying anything specific about communications since … there is nothing in the movie that tells/shows that or any kinda resolution to it IF that was an issue. Changing Attacking to Silencing hits it just right.

With that in mind keeping it simple by just saying “Silencing threats/etc.” you can see this in action in the movie. During the festival on Desert Planet #4 we have FO troops patrolling. Why? On Kajimii we see FO forces knocking on doors and causing a rucks? Why?

It’s all about them “silencing” anyone, groups, or whatever from getting too big and strong or organized like or to the Resistance.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

The only thing I’ll say on the crawl itself is that the message from Palpatine and its general impact on the Galaxy is an important plot point for the first act that got completely glossed over/missed in the theatrical release, aside from a vague line in the crawl.

This has been partially addressed by restoring Palpatine’s ACTUAL voice message (a very good choice! better than a Fortnite promo!), but I still wish there was a way to imply that a message was influencing Kylo and others to act without necessarily spoiling the Palpatine reveal. The novel makes it very clear that Kylo and the First Order are acting because of an imposter threatening his power, and this was planned to be in the film on Mustafar but was needlessly cut down along with other bits like the Oracle/Bogg creature.

I can live with not putting it in the crawl, but if a happy medium were possible, it could help.

without necessarily spoiling the Palpatine reveal.

That’s why I put “rumored to be from the late PALPATINE!” in my crawl. We’d be unsure as to whether it is the real Palpatine or not. It also adds to the Resistance being skeptical of his return until Poe’s confirmation.

There. It does add some mystery and build-up.

You really think that just because something is mentioned in the movie and has no evidence refuting it, doesn’t mean it’s automatically true? A fact is a fact. There’s nothing contradicting Kylo’s intentions to kill Palps.

And Palps wants to be killed, so Kylo saying he wants to kill Palpatine doesn’t tell us he’s doing anything against Palpatine’s plans at all, saying he wants to stop him would clear up any confusion on whether he’s on Palpy’s side or not.

RogueLeader said:

Yeah, to me, the throne = power. Kylo doesn’t want to be a Sith, but he wants that power.

The issue I have with that is that Kylo just spent the last movie working to take a throne that represents power, introducing another throne that represents power that Kylo wants to take just feels like a regression. And like Jar Jar said this is called the Sith throne, so more than power it represents a legacy that TLJ Kylo wouldn’t have any interest in, it makes more sense that he’s looking to make his own throne stronger so to speak, rather than trying to take a new one.

As for the crawl, I agree with changing “attacking” to “silencing”, other than that I don’t think it should be changed. I think it’s better to keep whether or not Kylo’s really on Palpy’s side ambiguous until he reveals his true plans to Rey (rather than saying “he sees him as a threat!” from the beggining), and instead focus on the “threat to his rule” being the flames of rebellion ignited by Luke… “see you around kid”.

Your point about Kylo and Palps doesn’t really apply to the theatrical. Kylo doesn’t know Palps wants to be killed, and thus doesn’t know whether it means obeying Palps or not. This problem kinda exists in Ascendant, as Palps warns Kylo about the spirit stuff - I understand that decision and do like it in theory, it raises the stakes… but… yeah.

If I were in charge of the movie, I’d have Palps urge Kylo to kill him only in anger and hatred specifically, and during the hangar scene when Kylo proposes to Rey the killing quote would be changed to this: “We’ll kill him, but not out of anger, not out of hatred. Then we’ll take the throne.”

Again, Kylo doesn’t know about and hasn’t even seen the Sith throne specifically. If the movie actually showed us Kylo Ren himself discovering the actual Sith throne, then I would see your point.

I agree with you, Sherlock!

I’ll chew on that final paragraph, hopefully finding a way to gently imply that rumors are out there of something, enough to drive Kylo mad in search of.

And that would make (enough) sense of of Poe saying the intel confirms “the worst.”

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I like Sherlock’s crawl. Pretty good stuff.

EDIT: Also, wanted to mention that you’re flat out wrong Testing. Kylo has seen the throne in Ascendant. He sees it in his Vader mask vision, right after Palps tells him to do as he asks. Basically enticing him to take it. But we want Kylo to NOT want that throne, because it is Sith. He only cares about the fleet.

Oh. I was referring to in the theatrical cut. Apologies.

Is it possible to add “We’ve passed on all we know” into the Luke and Rey scene?

Then how about, “We’ve passed on what we know…”? It could be interpreted as Luke and Leia, as well as the Jedi texts.

Didn’t we use to have an ignore button on the forum at one point? I sure could use one…

Anyway, love the new ideas for the crawl changes, and also the new subtle hints at Rebellion on Kijimi

I see the “threat to his rule” as everything in the previous two paragraphs: flames of rebellion, Rey training to become a Jedi, Leia being a force of unity. And the “hidden power” would be the gigantic fleet which on this version is Kylo’s main motivation. So I think the last paragraph nails down everything perfectly to imply this new direction for Kylo’s character.

Changing the “threat” back to Palpatine as it was on the original crawl undermines that direction. Instead of Kylo seeking out a way to quell the growing uprising, a current threat to his rule that ties directly to the previous film, he’d just be searching for rumours of a possible threat to his rule that has nothing to do with the current affairs of the galaxy. And it goes back to Sherlock’s previous worry of spelling it out to the audience Kylo wants to take down Palpatine instead of keeping things ambiguous.

It’s to highlight the importance of the FO not doing so well post-TLJ as well as Kylo wanting them to become a new Empire.

I think it’s just kind of worded awkwardly.

@burbin, yes.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

@Burbin That could work with sherlock’s crawl, specifically, but not really with my proposed one. It deals with the FO on the verge of collapse, and the civilians gaining the upper hand. With Palps, Kylo knows that the civilians are far too strong, whereas he doesn’t know how powerful or weak Palps might be in comparison to the FO, Resistance or civilians. Palps could be the only other threat Kylo could stop.

@BrotherOfSasquatch How about I lower-case it? Or what series of words would you use to describe the FO being on the verge of collapse?
