My main concern about having a Shaw ghost is that it would be impossible (at least with my abilities) to revert it back to the way we have it in v1 while still having the crackly saber. And I would want to do that for myself and everyone else who prefers Hayden.

Yeah in my limited editing abilities, I’m not sure how I’m going to handle that scene given that I’m planning on

-LUT applied
-Force ghosts (Hayden version)
-Keeping Leia’s saber blue
-Crackly Anakin’s saber

Sebastian Shaw saying “Rey” right at the same time Alec Guinness says “Rey” would make me melt into goo. 😭

I guess I’ve never understood the whole fascination with Shaw (probably because of my age). I remember I only owned VHS tapes of the originals as a kid and I always thought it was really disconnecting and immersion breaking to see a grandpa ghost of Anakin in ROTJ. Even at that age I knew there was no way he should be that old at that point (I saw the prequels first). It honestly kinda ruined the movie for me as a kid because I had a hard time suspending my disbelief enough to consider him the same character. Suffice to say, that was one special edition change I actually really enjoyed.

Of course, I am not suggesting that people who like Shaw are in the wrong. It’s a subjective preference that really comes down to what you grew up seeing. But it would be nice to have both ghost options released if jonh does come back and make a Shaw version before v2 is released. Shaw could be in the main file, and perhaps just that small portion of the film with both Hayden and crackles could be released separately so it could be replaced easier. It would really help people like me.

I’ve tested the Hayden ghost scene with a number of friends who watched v1 of the cut, and they all agree that the version we have now is an incredibly strong take and fixes one of the film’s weakest points. The idea that Disney themselves chose to ‘not’ do such a simple thing is beyond the pale, frankly, and this cut fixes that.

It helps bring the 9 episode saga full circle and make all 3 trilogies a bit more connected, and the ghost voice of Ewan in Episode VII mixed with Alec saying Rey already implies that, for whatever reason, the age and appearances of the ghosts can be a little more fluid than people first thought (and this is without considering the special edition change).

I very strongly recommend keeping the version you’ve got just as it is, it’s honestly ‘the’ reason to watch this cut that most viewers I’ve talked with resonate with.

I do like the idea of using a voice sample from Shaw, however. Something tiny in there would be wonderfully appropriate and still allow for some connection to his legacy.

I’m still trying to finalize the Medal Insert coloring. I have one version that’s designed to (hopefully) have a beaming effect, and one that’s a bit more flat and constant. Do people have a preference which one?

I’m kind of leaning towards Ghost Hayden as well, honestly. Shaw feels appropriate in ROTJ because that’s the version that Luke knew. Palpatine has a stronger correlation with Hayden though, in my mind. Plus, the audience is more familiar with Hayden’s face (doubly so if they only see the Special Edition ROTJ); and I like the idea of tying all three trilogies together in one shot. It feels more powerful to me.

I’m honestly not saying get rid of Hayden. I’d just like to see Sebastian Shaw in like an alternate version, personally. Even if it looks rough, I’d just like to not feel like that original ghost is forgotten. I honestly think (as much as Alec not being alive anymore has way more to do with it) a small part of why they didn’t have the ghosts in the movie was because of the Special Edition Hayden vs Sebastian ghost debate. That is an aspect of it they wanted to skirt around. The whining us OT purists is that loud, maybe.

But yeah, everyone’s right. It’s much better dramatically for Hayden to be there at the end here, I understand that. I especially enjoy the (what I like to consider) recognizing face The Emperor makes at Hayden Anakin specifically before starting to zap Rey. So good! For real.

I’d also like to see a Shaw version as an alternate, as it really has merit. However, Hayden feels right for the moment because you know if they’d put ghosts in there they absolutely would’ve (and might’ve) shot Hayden for the scene.

However, Shaw would make sense as it seems the rule is that the Force ghosts appear as the age at which they died. Luke and Anakin have their injuries and missing body parts restored.

I don’t accept Hayden’a ghost for ROTJ because it just doesn’t belong there. It does here, and I’d probably stick with it but would love a Shaw version as an alternate. Now that I’ve got more Google drive space to work with perhaps I could host both to choose from.

A voice clip of Shaw would be a nice touch, I agree there too.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Something happened here in the last month. These edit ideas have gone from simply extending shots to going to insane levels to remove and add things, and it’s all amazing.

Honestly I’m not entirely opposed to a voice clip of Shaw either, despite my small tangent earlier. Shaw did play Anakin Skywalker after all (albeit a very worn down one due to decades of using the dark side and sustaining so many injuries). But since I see the goal of this movie as to tie together all three trilogies, it would he nice to have a subtle callback to his portrayal. Obi-Wan has both young and old voices in this trilogy, so why can’t Anakin?

Ah the Hayden Shaw Ghost topic. It isn’t an easy answer and I personal don’t think there is a real wrong or right answer on this, since you got both the reality problems (Movie made years ago with a different actors) and then weird lore implications due to the special edition. (Wait … why is he young and the others are old? Que?)

In my, erm, “head canon,” the lava bath Anakin took messed him up physically obviously, and his voice. (Lava up to his head and neck, so it could affect his voice box.)

So in some ways, I am “ok” with the Hayden ghost, since the ghosts we see are based on how they look at the time of their death, just minus any problems. So if you lost an arm, you git it back! etc. Got “ugly” from some lava? No problem! It their “natural look” at the time of their passing.

The issue I have is it being “young” Hayden change in ROTJ special edition. Now I know, because of the timing of the prequels Lucas made the change.

So, for me, although I grew up with Shaw, for the sake of the saga to all connect it makes more sense with Hayden.

Although with the new Vader series having Hayden back, I’d use his face/picture to change ROTJ to line up with an aged Anakin as well as with what Jonh has down with his scene.

Yes! I think the placement there works a lot better.

I have a problem with Rey on ach-to. The grass is to artificial looking and I feel the sunny look completely takes away from her inner conflict.

Here is what I propose, and I would love for this to be done in the hal version but that’s just wishful thinking.

The scene should be overcast for the most part. Changing the colour grade makes it feel much more gripping in my opinion, especially with Rey standing in front of the burning ship and her scene talking to Luke. It makes me feel for her more.

I’m not sold, but it would introduce a sunRISE.

It’d have to be subtle enough not to make the scene hard to see. The fire and everything would need to look bright.

It could be better, I don’t have the set up to properly grade it and the like but I think done right it could make Luke lifting the x wing seem more striking.

My biggest issue is the fact that I can tell they are on a sound stage. The greens just seem way too overly saturated.

It does make the place seem more like Dagobah, which helps the allusion be even more clear. Although arguably that allusion to Yoda is already clearer than day (no pun intended).

The simplest and most effective thing to do for the puppet show would be for one big puppet AT-AT to be firing at Luke (just someone making a laser sound effect their mouth), then Luke raises his hand and sends it toppling over. An extended or complicated puppet sequence would start to get very fan edity.

EDIT: The person who came up with this concept is a genius.

heil Palpatine!
