The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 147

Even with what is included now, I think this version is a great jumping off point for other editors to make their own versions of TROS. Great job, Hal and company!

I’m watching the workprint now, and it occurs to me another reason it may be prudent to chop off the end of Kylo’s TIE cockpit rolling so it doesn’t literally explode.

Presumably, he has the Wayfinder inside. Considering how easily he crushed the Death Star Wayfinder, although I can believe he somehow survived this, I find it hard to believe that the Wayfinder survived all that jostling followed by literally exploding. Plus, the wreckage of the cockpit in the following shots looks relatively intact aside from being on fire, so it’d add some cohesion there too to cut the explosion.

Maybe there’s a way to include a brief shot of Kylo quickly grabbing the Wayfinder before the rolling/explosion so we can assume he protected it with his body and had it on him in the following shots?

Hey, I’d be happy to give it a try! I am picturing plumes of smoke in following shots but maybe that’s more from production footage.

Also, no one seems to have noticed the slightly different Hal9000 logo at the end…

EDIT: There is smoke and fire, but the ball is pretty much intact, so I’ll try it!

Also, does the closeup of the shuttle while Rey and Kylo are fighting over it sounds like the OOT Sarlacc to anyone else?

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

And all I meant was that I hope to get enough done for V1 not to need to come back for a V2, and close this off mentally and set it down. But if there’s something like new deleted scenes, you bet I’ll do one!

Awesome! Never give up on anything. The Force will be with you.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

I mentioned this ages ago but what do you think of a little switch around with force healing kylo, with the goal in mind to show Rey’s feelings as romantic, subsequently selling the Reylo kiss at the end.

Switch it around so that Rey’s hand reaches out to heal Ben after she confesses that she wanted to “take Ben’s hand”, healing him, and then running off as Ben stares in awe.

I shared this in another thread. Kylo’s tie not exploding.

I honestly don’t think this scene should be here seeing as all supreme leader ships are prototypes. This just pops back in the next scene.

I hear you, but I’m gonna leave it for this edit. It’s like Gandalf’s staff, it’s just sort of something that happens.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I’ll raise the volume on the added music as the ghosts appear before Palptine. It seemed a little too quiet.

Overall huge improvement to the original. Really love the ending with the chess scene and falcon flying off into the distance. Here are a few nitpicks that bug me:

9:35 - Cut Rey “ugh”.

27:07 - Remove “they fly now”.

55:40 - Trim stormtroopers “It’s good”, Rey “you’re relieved that we’re here”, stormtroopers “thank goodness your here” and “welcome guys”.

107:30 - Cut Goonie dagger. Majoras_wraths’s suggestion of adding Sith whispers is a great idea.

128:47 - Remove Luke saying “what are you doing?”

128:47 - Remove Luke saying “what are you doing?”

Not sure about that, theres barely any Luke as it is and feels very unnecessary.

I had a crazy idea as I watch the edit that I think it might be cool and work as little foreshadowing…
in 17:05, when Rey is looking at the forest, may insert a shot with a vfx work Luke Force Ghost/Vision in the woods in a POV of Rey, as the ghosts (mainly Luke) are watching her and standing behind her all along as she trains to be a Jedi, and it would build up to the new Jonh Ghosts vs Palpatine shot, and is not all that hard to make this…

the dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural

He sounds so condescending and the line seems tacked on. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yes. Or at the very least you could have light orbs flying around, signifying their presence. The scene in it’s original form is annoyingly pointless.

I dunno, it’s nice to have a moment of just thinking and not having something heavy-handed happen.

Anyone else for cutting the “it’s good you’re here” thing?

Not sure about that one, I think it would be fitting if when Rey first arrives on Exegol before battle or just in general a officer line mentions all the ships have been sucessfully manned or prepped with troops/pilots etc

I know a lot of changes have been made to Threepios dialogue after he has his mind wiped which I’m all for. Did anyone come up with a way of improving the ‘that’s not even a language’ scene. That part didn’t really sit right with me.

I understand, but it still feels a pointless scene. And there is no need to be a heavy-handed addition, it could be a subtle break in the urgent flow that would build to something later in the movie.

I’ve just finished watching the workprint. I hope this doesn’t sound bad as I know how much work you’ve put into it and I mean this with respect but I feel it’s extremely conservative and too close to the original.

I’m not a fan of Rey being a Palpatine or a Skywalker (without reason) and I feel Ben really needs to stay alive so Leia actually changes his destiny and her vision. Without this I just feel she added to his death rather than trying to save him.

If all the hal edits are on the same drive, I’d like a PM just to see hals TFA. I am waiting till y’all were done perfecting this before watching. Been watching this thread closely, getting exciting now, apologies if this was the wrong place to ask. Keep up the awesome work!

Yeah, it is really conservative, which is weird considering how much Hal hates this movie. Hopefully someone will use this edit as a base to make more radical edits, like with TFA Starlight and TLJ Rekindled.
