People have been saying that it's so clear that Green = Master up until AOTC ... so why didn't Obi-Wan, who was clearly a Master in ANH, have a green lightsaber?  Because that wasn't the case until TPM.  Blue was good, red was evil, and green was symbolic of a new kind of Jedi in ROTJ ... until the prequels.

Lightsaber colour reflects the jedi personality and choice. So blue and green people, blue and green. No yellow, orange, magenta, violet, pink etc etc etc

Why not those colors? What if someone's feeling orange? ;) Besides, it's just supposed to be a matter of whatever color crystal they put in it, right? The thing is, a lot of explanations--and in this case, most--come from the EU, where the story seems to change a couple of times a decade. So...yep.

Well being part of the new generation (well middle actually, since I'm 19) I'd probably have to disagree with you - but I don't :)

You've touched me with that comment and I must admit that having green in ROTJ only, would make a lot more sense.

Anyway, sorry to take this a little off topic, but it still has to do with lightsabers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBzVNynM84k

I just added sound to the video which previously wasn't there and someone else rotoscoped the sabers. Enjoy.

Well, I've "attempted" my hand at editing and well....please don't laught at me. All I have is Windows Movie maker, I don't really do editing, and I don't have ROTS, so I took some clips from youtube. As such theres a watermark the size of a small moon, but it will go away. Its the dooku duel from ROTS, and had this idea for awhile, but, it did not come out the way I wanted, so if some else would like to try it, go ahead. Anyways, I wanted to make dooku seem stronger, and this feel like a test for anakin, but the duel was to short. I read the Novel adaption by Mathew Stover, and if the movie was anything like that it would be better. Alot of stuff I wanted to do, I am incapable. Read first!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bB_JV96kAs

:I cut(very small) Obi and Anakin walking towards the steps, for me, it increases the tenstion.

:Cut dooku jumping like he's at the olympics. In the book, he gracfully glides down.

:Added dookus "just because there are two of you......" line from the video game. And the video quality goes down here from changing sourses, and is slightly(very slightly) out of sync. I also almost flipped the shot here, maybe some else could do it.

:Cut into the space battle to make the duel feel longer and to incease tenstion. I could not make the transition as smooth as I wanted because of audio(need lightsaber clash sound)

:cut back as obi one is forced pushed, and got rid of the droid yelling and palp's "yeah"

:Tried to make it look like anakins kick agaist dooku was surprising, not very smooth though. Maybe we can palp's "yeah" back in here.

Maybe we could have anakins saber crossed with dookus ala ROTJ, there was a sene like that but it was cut.

:Slightly editied dookus decapitation.

Ya, its not very good, and not to radical, but I tried.

Hmm ... I've never thought of myself as being part of the "new" or "middle" generation of Star Wars fans (I'm 20, myself), but I guess that makes sense.  I saw the pre-SE OT first, though (either in 1993 or 1994 for the first time, so I was 4 or 5), so I've never really considered myself to be part of the same generation that saw the PT first.

As this is an ideas thread it is possible to have edits covering the whole spectrum of sabre colour rationales (including what looks nice).

Though personally the blue for Jedi up until Luke in ROTJ makes a whole lot of sense to me.

When Luke loses his father's sabre it's like the end of one era and when he builds his new one it feels like the beginning of a new one and warrants Vader's fascination when he first inspects it.

Not bad. Not bad at all considering what you had to work with.

First of all, you had some pretty good ideas. Intercutting the lightsaber fight with the space battle is something that might work, but in the video it comes accross as a little too... less, since there isn't too much footage availible from ROTS to pull this off.

Adding that line from the video game was pretty cool too, but you'd have to remove the music from the game to make it work.

You did seem to make the fight tighter too. The Anakin surprise kick: again good concept. Execution was... a bit poor but not your fault, not at all. This would take some work anyway, since from a moviemaking perspective, a "surprise" shot is mostly filmed close to the surprsed subject, since you capture something that the audience doesn't expect aswell, and you try to capture emotion. Here it's more of a long shot, so it doesn't work too good. If we had the HD version, zooming in might work, though...

Overall: good job, again you made something pretty good with nothing. Which makes this a great job. If you like doing this you might wanna get some serious editing software. Vegas, Premiere,... I'd recommend Vegas for any beginning or advanced editor! It's a great piece of software.

Thank you! Words of encouragement are always nice. But yes, I did not have much to work with, what version of vegas do you sugest?

The current version is Vegas Pro 9, but any version since 7 will do, I think. These things are far from cheap, so if you could get an older version for a lesser price, it would do the job too... Although I'm not sure if this would be possible due to the activation procedure (pain in the neck!!) But hey, it's totally worth it's price.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Although I like the artistic presentation of all the blade colours, this is what I would say if I saw ALL of them in full motion simultaneously:

'Argh, the colours! They burn - the goggles do nothing!' :D

I'm not really against seeing more lightsaber colors in the PT. After all, there are way more Jedi so there is bound to be some diversity. But the lightsaber colors in the PT as they are, are fine with me. I agree that too many colors might look a little too childish.

Another reason for fewer lightsaber colors in the PT is to get back the "simplicity" of the OT. The PT already looks way more fancy than the OT, even though it's set 30 years earlier.

ben_danger, I'm usually not a big fan of color corrections, but your work on the arena looks very good! Your color correction makes details like textures and shades stand out more, and it makes everything look a bit more realisic. You could be a bit more subtle, I think. Some shots look quite washed out. Maybe you should correct it shot by shot. Anyway, great work!

Having the lightsabres monochrome, or only two colours, works if we are keeping the Jedi the morally questionable force that they are in the official prequels. If an edit is trying to make them more clearly good, it makes sense to give them different colours — it'd be difficult to pull off, but in this scenario I'd be in favour of every Jedi having a different colour, whether it be just varying hues of blue and green or running the gamut from yellow to purple. I don't think that'd be any harder on the eyes than a sea of blue or blue/green, and it ties in with the idea that Jedi all make their own sabres.

Yeah me too - we don't want the poor younglings to cut themselves.

Speaking of 'Nerf' though, I was reminded of this, lol - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlnCttr5kEM

To be honest, green was symbolic of how blue doesn't show up well on against an equally blue sky, that was the only reason we got a green saber at all.

Obi-Wan never said he was a Jedi Master, only a Jedi Knight, the only Jedi Master mentioned in the OT is Yoda. What's more, things changed a lot from film to film in the OT. Darth Vader was just a guy in a suit in ANH, he wasn't a cyborg until ESB, which is why his voice changed to be more robotic, and he certainly wasn't Luke's father.

Not saying that saber colours were planned out or anything, they jsut went with what they had, but I'm just saying it wasn't contridicted, since the structure of the Jedi Order was left pretty vague in the OT.

But this the prequel redux ideas, and we're talking about the old, outdated JEdi Order, I just think there should be some structure to it, siince wasn't one of the main points (lost in the sea of bad acting, dialogue and effects) that the Jedi Order was too contrsicted, and set in it's pointless rules? In the film that showed the structure of the old Jedi Order for the first time, TPM, the master had a green saber, and the padawan had a blue. In AOTC, the knight and his padawan both had blue, while the two confirmed masters (Windu and Yoda) had purple and green, the purple not counting since it was a favour to Sam Jackson. ROTS screwed it up by having it random completely, but it screwed up a lot of things.

Overall, I'd just like the saber colours to have some structure in the old Jedi Order, either uniform, or used to denote rank. If anything, it can show how the old system is outdated and over organized, with it being structured like a military organisation instead of an order of monkslike it should be. We won't see it in the films, but perhaps in Luke's New Jedi Order, saber colours won't matter, and there won't be ranks, it'll be more free and open to change, which is the whole point of it being a "new" order. All the old outdated ways of the Jedi and Sith die out with Yoda, Vader and Palpatine in ROTJ, after all. I'm just suggesting ideas, that's all.

Actually, I'll just repeat, what a mess.

That's not one of those "hindsight" things, is it? I thought that even in early drafts (and earlier?), it was known Vader had already been damaged by the lava and thus the walking iron lung he was even in ANH.

Intially he was wearing breathing apparatus because the boarding troops and Vader cut a hole into the hull of the Tantive to break through and vented the air.

They liked the look and because the sequence was cut built the backstory around it but the backstory was largely there by the release date as it was printed in lots of descriptions of the character, along with his Sith title (even though it never got a mention in the actual films).
