People have been saying that it's so clear that Green = Master up until AOTC ... so why didn't Obi-Wan, who was clearly a Master in ANH, have a green lightsaber? Because that wasn't the case until TPM. Blue was good, red was evil, and green was symbolic of a new kind of Jedi in ROTJ ... until the prequels.
To be honest, green was symbolic of how blue doesn't show up well on against an equally blue sky, that was the only reason we got a green saber at all.
Obi-Wan never said he was a Jedi Master, only a Jedi Knight, the only Jedi Master mentioned in the OT is Yoda. What's more, things changed a lot from film to film in the OT. Darth Vader was just a guy in a suit in ANH, he wasn't a cyborg until ESB, which is why his voice changed to be more robotic, and he certainly wasn't Luke's father.
Not saying that saber colours were planned out or anything, they jsut went with what they had, but I'm just saying it wasn't contridicted, since the structure of the Jedi Order was left pretty vague in the OT.
But this the prequel redux ideas, and we're talking about the old, outdated JEdi Order, I just think there should be some structure to it, siince wasn't one of the main points (lost in the sea of bad acting, dialogue and effects) that the Jedi Order was too contrsicted, and set in it's pointless rules? In the film that showed the structure of the old Jedi Order for the first time, TPM, the master had a green saber, and the padawan had a blue. In AOTC, the knight and his padawan both had blue, while the two confirmed masters (Windu and Yoda) had purple and green, the purple not counting since it was a favour to Sam Jackson. ROTS screwed it up by having it random completely, but it screwed up a lot of things.
Overall, I'd just like the saber colours to have some structure in the old Jedi Order, either uniform, or used to denote rank. If anything, it can show how the old system is outdated and over organized, with it being structured like a military organisation instead of an order of monkslike it should be. We won't see it in the films, but perhaps in Luke's New Jedi Order, saber colours won't matter, and there won't be ranks, it'll be more free and open to change, which is the whole point of it being a "new" order. All the old outdated ways of the Jedi and Sith die out with Yoda, Vader and Palpatine in ROTJ, after all. I'm just suggesting ideas, that's all.
Actually, I'll just repeat, what a mess.
