I was thinking today about my idea of restructuring TPM to be more along the lines of ANH.
In films like ANH, the latest Star Trek film, Battle Beyond The Stars etc. tension is generated by showing first the terrible effects the finale is trying to prevent at another location.
For example we are shown the destruction of Alderaan which sets up the dangerous potential of the Death Star which plays into the finale.
We see the destruction of Vulcan which set up the dangerous potential of Nero's ship which plays into the finale.
Earlier I had the notion of introducing Dooku as a hologram out investigating something similar to the Naboo crisis which is happening simultaneously.
What if instead of opening on Naboo we saw another invasion (also prompted by shaky Sith backing) of a future Separatist power against another peaceful Republic member.
It would be a way of starting the film and the saga with more action and visual excitement.
That way you could have a completely blank slate and show as much destruction as ingenuity can allow, foreshadow the possible danger to Naboo without adding continuity problems and paint Dooku as a witness to the Council and the Senate's failure to act.
That way all the Separatists are duped into their actions by Sith promises and the movement seen in the second episode doesn't come from nowhere and Dooku's connection makes more sense.
It would also mean that Amidala would have other leaders to back up her no confidence call because they had been attacked too.
Amidala could be tipped off that Naboo is next and rush back home with a Jedi escort only to be attacked, forced to land on Tatooine and finally arrive just in time for the invasion of her world which she stops.
Gunray is then shamed and joins the other duped leaders on the Separatist side.
Just an idea but with a little work it could be doable.
The destruction of Alderaan wasn't a major sequence (in terms of time) and yet it had a pivotal role in the first film.
There isn't any sense of peril in TPM and the beginning is really dull to watch most of the time.
