A magician never reveals their tricks so why should Angel!

Angel, I used one of your pictures to see if I could replicate what you did. I still couldn't do what you did. I tried this with no rotoscoping, and very few layers:

as you can see, I ran into a problem.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Angel, were those just filters, or something someone would have to do frame-by-frame to get the same results?

Not sure yet...

Im running more tests and pushing these even more further.

When i have answers and more examples i will let you know :D

EDIT: I can say that the only mask/rotoscope that i used was to keep the red lights in the clone troopers back helmets. Everything else came along nicely done :D

Edit2:

Its me or it feels more stormy now?

Wow!!! When you will do you're edit, Angel? :D

I really searching deep and new ways of CC with ways that can be applied as first or second passes and then the shot by shot rotoscoping CC. I have in mind what can be done with minimum masking work before post production.

A cryptic reply as ever Angel. lol. So are you going to share your methods, filters used and your process at all?

perhaps the two of you can converse in PM form so that Angel can keep his secrets from us mere mortals

I am too!!! CS4 didn't do much to persuade a change. CS5 looks pretty interesting though.

Redlettermedia has started putting up his AOTC review (same style so if that offended you before it will again).

But there are some interesting points there which may help fan editors.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfBhi6qqFLA

I'm convinced that the only way to salvage anything from the PT is to do a major reshuffle and remaking whole sections.

That would mean having to go beyond even the best fan edits so far.

Things that spring to mind are getting rid of the clone mystery and have Yoda inspect the troops instead of Obi-Wan with a mind to limiting their use. And have the Senate order their use on Geonosis over the heads of the protesting Jedi.

Have Anakin jump after the assassin droid instead of Obi-Wan.

Have no direct link between Zam Wesell and Jengo (or better still Boba Fett) so he is just taking out a rival and have Obi-Wan link him to Geonosis.

Have Padme more keen on Anakin and have her take risks against his instincts leading him into the romance after being convinced by her family that she actually has feelings for him.

Have some actual speeder crashes in the Coruscant chase scene to emphasis the danger including some serious near misses for the heroes.

Have Anakin dream of slaughtering the Sandpeople and feel guilt for just dreaming about revenge as a Jedi (this would make her feel sympathy for him instead of making her run a mile from the psycho).

Wery good rewiev, i love it. Bingowings, thats are wery good ideas, but you have to have: actors and actresses, money money and more money...

Btw, I always imagined the fall of anakin, that the jedi and the Republic is very burocratic, like in my country, there is law, but nobody cares of it. When the jedi don't rescue his mother, Anakin takes the case to his own hands. In the war they won likely by Anakins informations, that inteligence gathered the way like Jack Bauer did in 24. The jedi order then exile Anakin, but he turn to the dark side and returnes, and destroyes the Jedi order.

Some of those ideas could be accomplished through shifting existing material around but I'm starting to think that replacing CGI Yoda with a puppet (a good puppet) would be easier than trying to make his computerised cousin act with any of the dignity he shows in ESB.

I'm so glad I read your post yesterday and caught this first part of the review (including the rest of it which is thankfully still up), so thanks Bingo :) That guy is hilarious. Stupid Cartoon Network have removed the first video for some crappy reason.  I'd like to say that part 5 of the review is my favourite (the one where he talks about Anakin and Padmé's love for one another and how she fell for him).

Anyway I was wondering if we should add a small vision of Anakin's mother early on in the film before we cut to Anakin on that balcony in Coruscant. But it should be a vision that doesn't show her in actual pain because we could then add one as he's dreaming about her torture on Naboo, like he dreams about Padme's death in ROTS. It would add more of a kind of emotional bond rather than just being told about that she's in pain or that he keeps seeing his mother in his dreams.

Oh and I turn 20 today, bye bye teenage years :(

Yeah, I saw the review too... It was VERY bittersweet. I knew AOTC was bad, but now I fully realize it's horrifying contents.

There was so much bad brought to light that I'm starting to feel fan editing alone can't save this turd.

Honestly, probably our ONLY hope is that when Lucas kicks the bucket that some new director is able to step in and re-make the entire prequel trilogy.

Yep.... Back to the animated prequel thread! =/

I would say that's a problem!  Where did those crudely drawn arrows and circle come from?!

Many already existing edits have made these films less troublesome.

And restricting yourself to editing is a great exercise in seeing what can be done without the complication of reshoots and adding new elements so don't give up on making your own edits.

To bring these films up to the level of ROTJ alone would take a lot more than just editing and that's really what this thread is all about.

My point exactly. We need a rich guy who can fund my prequel reshoot. GO FIND HIM!

If only we had the original theatrical versions in decent quality, I could forget about the prequels and watch the good ones. There isn't a good reason why the prequels should exist anyway, aside from Georges need to make Star Wars, "Episode IV A New Hope".

You know, maybe that is the easiest most effective fan edit. Changing the number 4 to number 1 on A New Hope and so on... Then we don't have to worry about those pesky prequels. But, again, I'd love to see someone take another stab at it. And I'm still interested in what Ady has planned.

Ady, do you have any concrete plans that you can share? I recall you saying that they will be completely different movies once you get done with them.

Some people enjoy the prequels, especially in fanedited form.  That's a good reason for them to exist.

And they can enjoy them all day, but as far as my concern for them, I won't watch them. And if I get my originals on blu-ray, I won't care what George does.

Well, to be fair, you said "there isn't a good reason," and I provided one.

Author

Look at what Mr. Plinkett did!

Listen, I'm pretty bitter too about the prequels, and I have my reasons for my comments earlier. One of those being that I have worked on about 6 different cuts of Star Wars Redemption: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Redemption-Trilogy/topic/10028/page/1/

I kept it quiet because everytime I finished a new cut, I'd give it a week, view it, and hate it....

If i recall Infodroid said that he and TJdavis could not get the audio mix to where they wanted it... Well, my issue was, the prequels do not blend well at all with the OT. Everytime I watched a cut, I would always run into an issue when we transitioned between OT and PT... I could never make it feel like the two belonged. Hope that makes sense.

While trying to get this edit right, I've really become abundantly aware of the inconsistencies.

It was like I was trying to splice Blade Runner with the Care Bears movie.

Anyway. I don't mean to derail prequel fanedits in the least. I really want someone to succeed in redeeming them.

Maybe I already said that but I did a very little cut in my Silent edit (the dusty version, not the "clean" one) of TPM.

It's not "radical" at all but: when the gates opens and Darth Maul appears I always felt that showing Obi and Qui gon lighsabers FIRST would be so much better. You know, Maul would look at them, pissed of, but THEN, bam! he shows his double blade.

I'd really like the revisited version to use this tiny cut. Cause it's aso the little things that drives me mad!
