A different beginning for C3PO?

Threepio new beginning?

but how would he go from being In the hands of the Federation to Amidala and then the rebels? maybe he could somehow escape with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and then somehow replace Jarjar in the scenes that follow? (Wishful thinking I know)

My plan many posts back was to have Nute Gunray order Threepio to stay with the Queen (the Federation bods don't speak English so they need a protocol droid) until she signs the treaty...as she never signs he stays with her until the end (including getting on her cruiser) because Padme doesn't reveal herself to be Amidala until the last act he stays with whoever is calling herself the Queen so he doesn't get off at Tatooine but does follow her into the throne room where he refuses to shoot her because it's against his programming.

There is alot of Anthony Daniels material to sample from and get enough dialogue.

It just needs someone with the patience to slip him into the footage.

I thought it would be fitting if R2 and 3P0 came from the opposite sides in the beginning.

cool idea but I could see it being very difficult to execute. where could you work in this whole new 3po backstory?

First we see him in the scenes above.

Then we see him in the staircase scene where Nute Gunray orders the Queen and her people processessed (it is here he orders Threepio to encourage the Queen to sign the treaty and not to leave her until she does he takes these orders literally).

When Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are about to storm the hanger (remove Pananka's line "They need her to sign a treaty to make this invasion of theirs legal." to something similar by Threepio (I can't stand the way Hugh Quarshie delivers most of his lines in TPM anyway, he is a good actor but I understand he wasn't having a happy time making that film".

He is placed with the Queen in most shots and becomes a warning voice for her (or her decoys) always reminding her of the odds against her.

When the Queen and her crew get onto the ship Threepio comes too. and sticks with whoever is wearing the Royal wardrobe until the battle breaks out in the palace at the end.

He can't climb up to the upper levels and is captured before Padme but is brought into the throne room to translate.

When Padme seizes the Viceroy Gunray points to a gun on the floor and orders Threepio to shoot the Queen.

He strongly advices Gunray not to put his life in further danger (thus reminding Gunray about the odds against him) and tells him that assassination is not permitted by his programming.

Padme keeps Threepio as her part of the heavy reparations the Trade Federation have to pay Naboo.

For AOTC he stays on Naboo most of the time in the service of the Queen but when Anakin decides to return to Tatooine Threepio comes along too he pops out for a few minutes to let them know they have a message from Obi-Wan (that way Owen hasn't owned by proxy Threepio for months but has seen him for a few minutes, which explains how he wouldn't twig twentyish years later who he is until Luke mentions Obi-Wan, up until then he was just another droid).

In the droid factory he still loses his head but doesn't get the head swap or enter the arena, Artoo repairs him in the factory and switches off the security systems to allow the Jedi to sneak into the arena with relative ease.

Threepio and R2 attend the wedding (he is gold in all of these scenes).

Threepio is in all the restored deleted scenes in ROTS.

3po could be quite a fiendish character in that way, perhaps he could send transmissions from the ship alerting darth maul?

Or perhaps he just has a tracking device fitted (I can't see Threepio as the fiendish type myself, if he tried it he'd bugger it up).

I'm not a fan of the use of the word retarded in that way.

Threepio is a tool (in more ways than one) and he is programmed to translate and perform within the accepted or established codes of procedures and behavior depending on the context.

He would see Amidala as a human being of high rank so it would be doubly doubtful that he would consciously do anything to harm her I assume protocol droids act within strict programming limits like the Asimov rules to make them trusted in high circles.

Otherwise Protocol droids would be planted all over the place and bump off their assumed masters all the time.

To be accepted at such a high level they would need to be conditioned to be safe.

That wouldn't stop someone in the employ of a Sith Lord from sticking a tracking device on or in him.

Slightly changing the subject, while I was looking up sail barge pictures I discovered this little beauty which looks like the sort of thing we might see on Naboo, Kamino or Alderaan:

in AOTC, when anakin returns to tatooine to the homestead, perhaps things could be reorganised slightly?

anakin shows up at the homestead, to find his mother dead and buried. He kneels at the grave, and like one of the edits, the line 'i miss you so much' is shortened to 'i miss you'.

then we cut to them sitting at the homestead, and lars explains how she was taken by the tusken, dialogue is cut so we know she is dead. anakin gets up and he says 'your mother is dead son' (paraphrased) and anakin silently walks off, gets on a speeder, finds the tusken and kills them. (the hunting of the tusken would be shortened and probably just show anakin leaving on the speeder and emerging at the camp)

this could make his killing a bit more premeditated, though i understand if it could be a bit too heavy too soon

I personally prefer the Phantom Editor's subtle edits throughout the sequence

what did he do?

He trimmed a lot of the introductions at the moisture farm to move the pace along, and then, in a pretty genius move he had Anakin's mother never finish saying "I love you" so Anakin feels no sense of finality. It makes Padme saying "I love you" to Anakin towards the end of the film more powerful.

Another possible but very time consuming possibility would be to adjust the colour of Jedi outfits to look less like moisture farmers and more like the outfit Luke wears in ROTJ, something like this (only done better hint, hint to those up to the challenge):

Here's an idea I had regarding his quick turn (but not relating directly to the "reason"). It seems to me that when he confronts Palpatine and discovers he's the Sith, he's almost ready to kill him, but he changes his mind so quickly later. Instead, as per George's original plan, edit the scene in Palpatine's hallway so that Anakin seems conflicted by Palpatine's admission. He ignites his saber breifly, but after some prattle from Palps (insert "reason" here), he turns off his saber, and Palpatine smiles. Scene ends. (Anakin never alerts Mace. The Jedi already suspect Palpatine will not turn over power. I think there's a deleted scene that may be useful here). When Mace shows up, Anakin is nowhere to be seen. But he's actually sulking conflictedly in the shadows (maybe footage from the council chamber scene could be darkened and rotoscoped). While the duel continues, Anakin experiences his true turn: an emotional crescendo where we hear in his mind waves of overlapping voices (Qui Gon: "He is the chose one", Palps: "I see you becoming the greatest of all the Jedi", etc etc.). The voices continue and jumble up, getting louder and becoming unbearable (the right music could really sell this). Just as the voices reach a peak and crash into silence, Palps seems to be beaten. Anakin, now turned, suddenly steps out to quietly dismember Mace. After the electrified Mace flies out the window, the kneeling Anakin simply says "I will do whatever you ask, my master."

This.

Want some titles? How about these:

Episode 1: The Son of Suns

Episode 2: Across the Stars

Episode 3: The Last of the Jedi

Ideas:

Episode 1

Tie Dooku and/or Grievous in somehow

Somewhere I remember reading people disliking the Federation's beige/brown army. Maybe try a sort of blue steel color, like with later Separatist machines

Episode 2

Have maybe some of the Confederacy's capital ships visible above Geonosis

Original "On the Conveyor Belt" score restored

Add some of the unused Arena score

Episode 3

Insert Grievous' figher into the opening battle of SW3, just so he actually does something early on

Maybe see Republic/Empire troops and ships slowly become less colorful and more gray throughout the movie

Remake the Tantive IV model

Don't know if there's a point, but maybe let Qui-Gon's voice be heard at various times in SW2/3, and make him visible at the end of 3

Don't know how you'd accomplish this, but give Vader a really angry-sounding "NOOO!"

Whatever. I'm tired. Don't know if I'm thinking straight.

One radical change that popped into my mind the other day was replacing the Gungans with Mon Calamari (I said it was radical).

Almost impossible to imagine how it could be done but just how many sentient amphibious lifeforms does the saga need and it would make us care more about them in Jedi if we met them back in Episode One.

Jar Jar is largely redundant in almost all the films bar the first one (where his unique manner is almost universally loathed) but if he was the young Ackbar we would see him as a founder of the Rebellion and instrumental in the Empire's downfall.

I realise that it would be easier to replace the Mon Calamari with Gungans in Jedi but Ackbar looks so much better.

Hey guys. First time poster here. I signed up because there are so many creative ideas going around on this board and in this thread, and wanted join the fun.

I wouldn't call this radical, but here's my idea of inserting Dooku into The Phantom Menace:

Right after Mace's line "Which was destroyed, the master, or the apprentice?" and the pan towards Palpatine, we cut back outside, where we see Dooku watching Qui-Gon's funeral, a sad look on his face.

I think it's subtle, adds to his character when it comes to his feelings towards the Jedi, Qui-Gon and the Republic as he explains to Obi-Wan in Attack of the Clones, and it doesn't contradict anything.

More ideas to come.

Welcome!

Not a bad idea but Maybe a bit confusing placing it right after the "master or apprentice?" line. The audience would know that he's not Sidious unmasked (the beard!) but it would lead to think that there's a link. (and could be really confusing if Sidious face is completely hidden through all the movie.) But after all, there is the pan on Palapatine face... that should be enough hint to the audience to  not make confusion.

Also adding a new character at the very end of the movie is a bit odd. But why not, and I agree it would add more depth to the character. It would be a nice scene on its own; it's just the moment it is integrate that bugs me a little.

Sorry for my english.

JasonN (and a few other editors like MagnoliaFan) remove Sideous' face:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgM8GbfjS3A&feature=related

I think the Dooku insert is great for two reasons, one it could work as possible alternative Master and set up Darth Tyrannus for the second and third parts but also it could be seen as the beginning of Dooku's fall with the loss of his former apprentice due to the inaction of the Jedi.

So it is actually a rather radical change.

It might be possible to create a line (from sampling elsewhere) where Dooku says something along the lines of "Goodbye my old friend".

I think the Episode One bit in the title removes or plays upto the any confusion the audience might have (it's safe to assume that they will know that other episodes exist).

I agree that this new Dooku scene is cool, but if Sidious face is removed from all the movie, I still believe the audience will think that this new character, who shows up at the very end right after the "master or apprentice?" line, is Darth Sidious unmasked.

But maybe we could play with that, I don't know.

All in all a nice scene that opens new doors!

it would be amazing if dooku could be inserted into TPM council scenes, maybe flanking yoda. it would make his subtle appearance at the end change from "who the hell is that" to "oh its that guy from before"

love the idea silverkey! welcome to the forums!:)

Thanks for the words of welcome and compliments guys.

I choose to insert Dooku in TPM's final moments because it's subtle, and because, to me, it works two ways: Mace's line and the pan hint at Palpatine being the master, and when Dooku shows up, it both creates some ambiguity (is that old guy the true Sith master? / who is he?) and sets him up as being the new Sith apprentince for the next two movies. Also, as Bingowings mentioned, it creates a bit more of an arc for Dooku, and makes him a stronger character.

ben_danger, I hate to disagree with you, but I don't think having Dooku on the council in TPM would work, because he and Obi-Wan can't meet before AOTC ("It's a shame our paths have never crossed before").

On the topic of Dooku: next to Sidious, he is the only recurring villain in the PT. Maul, Fett and Grievous are all in only one movie. Dooku dies early on in ROTS, butI think we could make his character feel less disposable if we add as much to him as we can. Here are some thoughts I have:

  • Show him at the end of TPM at Qui-Gon's funeral (like in the images I posted)
  • Leave in in Ki-Adi Mundi's line of him being a political idealist
  • In his conversation with Obi-Wan, remove the line "...and together we can destroy the Sith!" and add in the line "The Republic can not be fixed. It is time to start over", taken from his deleted scene with Padme.
  • Take out all references to him being Yoda's apprentice. I don't think that fits, considering Yoda's comments on Jedi training in ESB.

This way, I think we can give his character a little more depth

What do you guys think?

Though i do like the fact that it would be a nice subtle thing and would be quiet cool few things i gotta say with all due respect:

  • Show him at the end of TPM at Qui-Gon's funeral (like in the images I posted)

Though this would be good it depends in what context u want dooku to be there. For Dooku to be there he must have a reason. If he was there to see the passing of his old apprentice but watching from afar while feeling mixed emotions. As if he thinkin my old friend and apprentice Qui Gon is dead but its end justify the means? What you gotta remember guys is the Jedi possibly would of sensed Dooku's presence since "the shroud of the darkside" hadn't fallen by then.

  • Leave in in Ki-Adi Mundi's line of him being a political idealist

This should definately stay otherwise his leadership of the CIS kinda feels downplayed.

  • In his conversation with Obi-Wan, remove the line "...and together we can destroy the Sith!" and add in the line "The Republic can not be fixed. It is time to start over", taken from his deleted scene with Padme.

I do like the original line alot better basically because at that point in the film we haven't seen Dooku's true self yet. The idea of Dooku tryin to sow the seeds of deception in Obi Wan's mind is better automatically makin Dooku seem like a bad guy straight away.

  • Take out all references to him being Yoda's apprentice. I don't think that fits, considering Yoda's comments on Jedi training in ESB.

I say leave references in that Dooku had been Yoda's apprentice, just the whole feel of Star Wars bein about Fathers and Sons. Yoda then Dooku then Qui Gon then Obi wan then Anakin. Feels right and to mess with this kinda feels wrong.

Sorry if im bein too negative lol, as i said no disrespect, just my opinion lol

Many Thanx

That line could be deleted or altered (he is certainly a Jedi of high enough rank to be on the Council and that might put him in a better position to fiddle with the archive records):

Dooku's seat

but if he is Qui-Gon's former Master the barriers that held back Qui-Gon from taking (or even wanting) that position may apply to him also.

I agree with both of your other changes but I would also amend Obi-Wan's line "Qui-Gon Jinn would never join you" to a shorter and sweeter "Qui-Gon Jinn? Never..." (as if the idea was more preposterous than insulting).

I know Lucas argues that Star Wars is a like a poem with repeated themes but he does tend to just use that as an excuse to cut and paste lines from the other films (and Ewan doesn't deliver the line well anyway).

It might be possible to fiddle around with the dialogue from this or the other prequels to change the line (ironically by cutting and pasting words from other films).

The Yoda/Dooku confrontation could do with tinkering (some have proposed removing the sabre clash altogether because though it's fun it kind of weakens Yoda to see him hopping around like that) others have suggested removing the force lightning as they see this as something which should be kept for Palpatine alone.

Whatever the changes snipping that revelation out should be a doddle.
