Why would Lucas sign the Pollack book if he's not happy with it? *confused*

'cos he's weird.

I just finished watching this documentary. Although I'm personally tired of all that's been done to Star Wars over the years, I enjoyed it overall and shared the feelings of many of the interviewees. Unlike the "battered wife" analogy, however, I've walked out the door and left for good.

I don't know that I'm as forgiving in the end as the doco suggests fans should be. It'd be nice to one day have quality Original Trilogy movies and then I'd be having my own ROTJ-like Ewok celebration. But that day is not now or soon.

Back to the doco... I'm not sure why there was so much time spent on the Raiders of the Lost Ark fan remake. The section dealt with fan films, but the Raiders bit seemed out of place. This is about Star Wars.

I also agree with the comment here about the DVD "bonus" discs getting such a brief mention, as it's one of the most FFFUUU! moments from Lucasfilm to original fans in recent times. Including the Holiday Special kind of makes up for that though ;)

I would have liked to have heard a bit more from Gary Kurtz too.

I give this documentary a B.

Yeah, the only part of the documentary I totally disagreed with was the ending. "We love you George, we still love you. blah blah blah"

George can eat a bag of dicks at this point.

Yes, but it felt to me like the Raiders part went on a bit too long.

aw man, that sucks.  thats essentially why he can get away with anything.  If those blu rays sold only 100k copies as opposed to 1 million and the feedback specifcally cited the lack of OOT, you betchurass lucas would have relented.

i dunno - i guess the documentary is not what i thought it would be.  and people are entitled to feel however they feel.  if they love him, they love him.  he's non grata to me until he at least fully admits that the whole 'original vision/saga/PT' was a complete crock and the whole PT enterprise was your garden vareity cash-grab and he lied thru his teeth to the fans AND the cast/crew.

Finally got a chance to watch this and enjoyed it. The director did a nice job of conveying the arc of Lucas' progression as a filmmaking force and capitalist. I agree with others that at the end there was a sudden change of tone, but that's better than ending on a "F U GEORGE" type of note.

I definitely liked hearing from Prowse and Kurtz, and Gaiman was a nice touch as well. All the interviews were very entertaining and thoughtful.

I don't know, I just watched it the other day and while I liked some parts, I have a feeling that it doesn't help our cause at all, because I think that to an outsider, it really makes us look like whiny fanboys.

Because instead of showing someone calmly stating what the problem is and why we're so upset about it, it shows a bunch of nerds ranting very loudly about Han shooting first.

I wondered if my clip wasn't used because it was too calm, not entertaining enough.  But I haven't seen the doc yet, so I'm not really in a position to say.

I agree that some things were excessive, like that home video of the woman yelling at George and making him write a new script. Yet, the director seemed to balance the fanboy rage with other opinions of people explaining why all the changes make the films worse, change the characters, and basically make no sense. There were even a couple people saying the "r'ed my childhood" analogy was nonsense, which I liked since that's a foolish thing to say.

I liked everyone's responses to The Phantom Menace. They all kind of sat there recalling their first viewing experience how shortly into the movie they began to feel intense disappointment.

I rewatched the first TPM trailer after the documentary, and I had a rush of nostalgia for being 14 years old, seeing that trailer, and being blown away. Watching it now, I saw elements that looked interesting if done correctly and others that looked stupid (Binks).

There's a good interview with the documentary director at RedLetterMedia, but I'm guessing everyone here has seen it.

Totally agree. Overall I thought it sucked, and looked like so many campy docos out there, you see on late night TV on topics few people care about.

There was about 10 mins of footage all up I thought was quite good.  I realise a lot of the approach was so that it would be entertaining and not boring, but sadly in the end it makes the entire idea of what we're trying to say a complete joke, and not a serious discussion point.

I still can't believe the PT morons defending those horrible movies in the documentary. It just defies all logic and sense. They must be so desperate to like any new Star Wars.

Seeing the short clip of George with his new box of pencils and sitting down to think of ideas makes me sad.

At the risk of coming out of this with a the impression of a brown nose, Jay's contribution while short summed up my feelings on the SEs the most.

It was however frustrating to see Ady's efforts represented by a shot of a few less rodents than the 2004SE.

It made out that his words translated into actions of minor significance.

I also like Neil Gaiman's take (I'd have no problem with George doing whatever he liked as long as the films I already liked were available for me to pay to see).

Long story short Lucas's insistence on repressing the original versions of the films created the majority of the problems with his fan base.

The PT and Indy 4 wouldn't have created as much of an fowl stench if the gummy old farts like me could watch a nice clean copy of the versions we originally saw without bending the law.

It's the cascade of dick moves that has put George in this position, not just one or two 'less than best' creative decisions.

Best.  Quote.  Ever.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

watched this with several friends.  Not a great documentary but was highly entertaining and well worth watching.  Also, the Gary Kurtz extended interview on the special features section is very interesting, and gives a little more insight into the mind of George Lucas.

OK - one of things that annoyed the f***ing hell out me was that the makers of this documentary put a fake “Pieta” in the background when they were interviewing one guy (who spoke multiple times). In case you don’t know, the Pieta is a famous statue (made by Michelangelo) of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus’ dead body after it was crucified. The f***kers who made this documentary had a little miniature Pieta in the background. The head of Mary was cut off, and was replaced by a yellow ball with a happy face. WTF was that? Are they purposely trying to insult my religion for no reason? This documentary is about Star Wars. Why would they add something so offensive for no reason?

As for the documentary itself - I agreed with everything said about the new Trilogy and the remakes. Let's face it - the greatness of the original was a fluke. Lucas had nothing to do with it. Harrison Ford and his great acting/improvising had more to do it with it then Lucas did.

Diving right into the deep end of the pool with your first post? Okay.

A Michelangelo statue is a great work of art regardless of it's subject. I would speculate the yellow ball head was a wry commentary on altering anything that is considered a work of art. Michelangelo's David might have been a better choice, but then somebody might be upset over the nudity. I doubt the filmmakers were deliberately out to offend anyone's faith with it.

Was this statue digitally inserted, or was it really in the background?

I watched this quite recently, it was quite enjoyable although I thought the most interesting interviews (i.e. Kurtz and Prowse) weren't long enough and the least interesting ones (some dude dressed as Boba Fett? wut?) had way too much screen time.

Also it was cool to get the perspective from Indy fans, as most publications tend to focus entirely on George's relationship with Star Wars fans and neglect Indy fans completely. I'm sure the inevitable RLM review of Crystal Skull will fix that, though.

Was there any mention of how Mark Hamill was "discouraged" by Lucasfilm in being interviewed for this?

Boba has piqued my interest.
