These samples are amazing. When they’re done I have a hard time imagining any fan project being better for me.

Wow, this looks like a new upcoming reference! Thank you for sharing!

So as I understand it, these are only going to be used as in-house references for the big name projects here?

WOW!! Despecialized 2.5 on top, Poita’s work on bottom. Poita, is it ok if I post comparisons like this in Dr. Dre’s film color thread? In that thread we can pick apart and debate white balance, light bulb degrees, red vs. blue hues and such without interrupting your flow here. 😃

MAN those colors are awesome looking.

Go for it, but keep in mind I have not done a colour grade yet, and this does not match the print very closely.

What’s interesting to note is, that aside from the fact the print has not been corrected yet, the colors on the print suggest the scene was shot during the day, while the Despecialized Edition’s colors suggests it was shot while the sun was setting. How do I know this?

If I correct poita’s scan with the algorithm (which essentially tells us the colors at midday), the colors hardly change, suggesting the scene was actually shot relatively close to midday:

Original poita scan:

Poita scan color balanced::

The Despecialized Edition’s colors show a massive change however:

Despecialized:

Despecialized color balanced:

The color balanced Despecialized colors are closer to the print colors.

A production photo I found on the internet, suggests the scene was indeed shot at a time closer to midday, and is more consistent with the print colors:

being an outdoor scene, can’t you also let the shadows help determine that it is day time? certainly not high noon, but not sunset.

The production photo I posted has a slight yellow cast, somewhat more than the print. This suggests the scene was shot in the afternoon, leading to the slightly yellow lighting, but not late enough to cause the orange hue of the Despecialized Edition, which appears to be a residue of the bluray color timing, which suggests lighting conditions closer to sunset:

On the other hand, it could be that poita just did a very good job color balancing the print. He did say, the colors don’t match the print very well.

Sorry, I just meant that I balanced the sequence by eye, out of habit/years of balancing shots. I didn’t spend more than a minute on the colour adjustment, just did it without really thinking, like changing gears whilst driving.

It might match the print, it might be miles off, I don’t have the print here to check.

I was going to post those comparisons in your thread and say almost EVERYTHING you said line for line. I’m not even joking… and throw in my opinion that Lucas made the conscious choice to regrade the movie colors there to make it look like it’s getting near sunset hours because they’ve spent the “whole day” with the events leading to and traveling to the Sarlac pit… And that I think the Endor forest scenes are a tad warmer than they were in the theater also (because I actually remember those better) and then end it with screenshots of Willow original DVD versus the blu ray release in 2013 in which they REALLY added in the gold tones. The difference between Jedi, Willow, and Star Wars is that the color timing changes made for Jedi and Willow films have “artistic merit”… right or wrong, the brain can logically work out what the thinking was, versus Star Wars which has just left us all in a cluster getting rid of them and our brains screaming “MAGENTA NOT RIGHT!”

Then I was going to beg Dr. Dre to do a shot of the blu ray corrected to Poita’s scan to see how that would look… you took care of me there too!

Poita, Dr. Dre… you guys are the bomb.

The “corrected” Despecialized is actually simply applying the color balancing algorithm to the Despecialized color grading. The color matching algorithm really attempts to match the Despecialized frame to the print.

wre you thinking of having one name for all three projects, or a separate name for each? my preference would be one name for all three as it ties them together. are these all the same film stock? if they are all eastman for example i think that could be part of the name. PET: poita’s eastman trilogy. i know you said your name doesn’t have to be part of this, but i think it is how most of us are altready thinking of it, so it seems natural.

Well, POT: Poita’s Original Trilogy would probably be better. I don’t think they’re on the same stock, either. He’s doing the Spanish LPP of SW (was that duped from Eastman?), I believe faded Eastman of ESB, and of course an LPP of ROTJ. Is this correct, Poita?

i dont think POT coveys how seriously great these projects are, but it does meet the ‘simple’ requirement…

JEDIT: used wrong tense, i should say, it doesn’t convey how great i think these projects will be.

It will be a combination of multiple prints for all three films actually.

Poita’s Seriously Great Original Trilogy doesn’t quite flow so well 😉

Is one of the Star Wars prints you’re working on a Tech IB?
