The Original Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 19

I’d consider swapping out the Giacchino music for Williams to make it blend better. It doesn’t sound like Williams to me, but that might only because I already know it isn’t. I can’t exactly point to anything stylistically different about it.

I was thinking about some random ideas to better tie the PT with the OT, while trying to keep the plot twist (I’m gonna post here just the changes I would do to the OT)

A New Hope:
-Ben would call R2 “Old friend” instead of “Little friend” (he still lies to Luke about how he doesn’t remember owning a droid)
-When Ben tells Luke about Vader, he would say “A sith lord named Darth Vader helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights” (The “sith lord” part would come from that video of an AI reading the Darth Plagueis copypasta with Alec Guinness voice and the part about Vader being Kenobi’s pupil is cut due to Anakin being his only known apprentice)
-Vader would say during the fight: “When I left THE JEDI I was but A learner, now I am the master” (The dialogue during the fight is changed a bit to hide the fact that Vader is Kenobi’s apprentice; while trying to keep the meaning of the original scene)
-I think changing “Darth” with “Vader” is a very popular idea between editors but I would also list that

Through the trilogy…
-No one would refer to Vader as Obi-Wan’s apprentice until after the reveal in Episode V (this includes Yoda’s brief dialogue with Luke in ESB, where their dialogue about Vader can easily be trimmed to be about if the dark side is stronger, without any mention of him)

Return Of The Jedi:
-If in your edit Padme dies, I think you could trim the dialogue about how Leia can remember her real mother
-This isn’t very necessary but Vader could say to Luke “Padme once thought as you do” (I think he should say “Your mother once thought as you do” but I can’t find an instance where Vader says “mother”)

I don’t care for trying to preserve a plot twist that everybody on the face of the Earth already knows but I do actually really like the idea of Obi-Wan referring to Darth Vader as a Sith lord rather then just “a young Jedi” (a Sith reference in the OT is a great thing in my book, and I also think it just makes more sense from an in-universe perspective), Obi-Wan calling him “Vader” instead of “Darth” (also fits with new canon), and Vader referencing Padme instead of Obi-Wan. I know some people prefer changing ROTS so Obi-Wan tries to redeem Anakin and I can see some of their reasoning but I think the way they did it works better for characterization. Obi-Wan trying to kill him shows the flaws of Jedi indoctrination, fits with his attitude towards him in the OT, and Vader saying “Padme” or “Your mother” instead of “Obi-Wan” shows how Luke is both a more modern, different Jedi as well as having character traits similar to his mother, further reinforces how much family means to Vader, and is just more poignant IMO, calling back to the scene on Mustafar when she said those exact words to him.

I know there are a group of fans who think that later material just shouldn’t contradict older material and the older material shouldn’t be changed to reflect that, but I’m all for retcons as long as they’re good retcons, and all of the retcons mentioned are IMO good.

Agreed. I’m definitely in the camp that feel like Star Wars has a great deal of forward momentum now, and we should roll with it rather than trying to anchor the ongoing saga to its original source. I’ve always believed that tweaking the OT to suit what the canon is now is the best approach.

Take Leia’s mother, for example. The OT and PT versions (“I remember my mother”/she died in childbirth) has always been a legitimate retcon which has required smoothing. Back when we just had PT and OT, and the PT was arguably worse, it made sense to allow the OT to be ‘master’. But now, there’s more content adding to the volume of canon supporting Padmé dying in childbirth, that it makes more sense to me to tweak the dialogue in the OT.

Yesterday I had an idea with what and how to replace the second Death Star in ROTJ and TROS.
I came to by rewatching the clone wars episode on the Blue Shadow Virus.

So I thought about replacing the Death Star with Exegol and the Sith-Fleet, but instead of minideathstarcanons, these ship would be equipped with some sort of chemical weapon, that employs a toxin that only humans are immune to.
So Exegol would be retconned to be a giant gas planet neighboring coruscant and we would establish that hidden in its depths the emperor synthesized a toxin made from the blue haze and equipped the fleet with this.
Endor would be Exegol’s only moon and contain the shield generator that protects the research station.
Now the rebel plan would stay the same: Han, Leia, Chewie and Luke will send out to disable the shield so that the alliance can blow up the station. The station would contains the navigational systems for the Sith-Fleet, which would afterwards be swallowed by Exegol.

On top of that I would like to incorporate the civil fleet too, as it would really fit theme as do the Ewoks and the whole opening with Jabba’s palace, for they show us the colorful universe that Star Wars is and fight the Empire that seeks to conquer and destroy it and each of its inhabitants.

And in particular I personally like how this would add a different feel of a final stand to protect, as opposed to another Death Star, which always made me question on how long they’ll take to build the third one.
Enter TFA 😄

Peter, your whole Exegol idea is confusing me.

Elayem, I really like Ben calling R2 old friend.

I agree with the overall sentiment that everything must adhere to the OT and the OT can’t be changed to suit other things instead is nonsense. A lot of changes that can be made to it are fairy trivial but at a lot to the sense of continuity. I think trying to preserve the twists is silly, tho. Everyone and their dog knows who Vader is, and the OT should be watched first.

I am sorry, I am bad at explaining.

I’ll try to point out my idea as dry as possible:

-The Emperor developed a toxic weapon to kill everyone in the galaxy but humans and equipped a giant fleet with this weapon

-this happened in a research station hidden inside a giant gas planet neighboring Coruscant

-on the forrest-moon of this gas planet the Empire has build a shield generator to protect the research station that also contains the navigational systems to launch the fleet (the same plot point as in TROS)

-Han and the crew destroy the shield generator and Lando and the Rebels blow up the research station

-the story surrounding Vader, Luke and the Emperor is set in the Emperors room on the research station

-I am still thinking on how to incorporate the civil fleet, as it would fit brilliantly from a thematic standpoint

-note: TROS wouldn’t exist in this version as the second DS is gone and much of the footage of Exegol would be required

I hope my idea has become clearer.

I know that this might very well be impossible to pull off, but I feel as if this would make for a better final stand against the Empire and simply be different, new and exiting as opposed to another DS. And that’s why I would like to discuss this idea and hear other peoples thoughts on it.

I know this may sound ridiculous but: What if Obi-Wan in Episode IV tells Luke that his mother (Padme) wanted him to have Anakin’s lightsaber when he was older? Instead of lying about Luke’s father (as usual)

That way, this wouldn’t be yet another of those “From another point of view” but something that actually could happen off-screen in Episode III

Where would we get Alec Guinness saying “mother” from?

I’m not for the idea myself, but I’m reasonably sure he has to have said it at some point during Doctor Zhivago.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

He says “father” quite a lot in the films
I don’t know if it would be too difficult to change “Fa-” with “Mo-”
