The Original Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread — Page 17

Sorry, but this ain’t a 30’s serial. It’s 2020, audiences expect more complicated storytelling than just “he escaped.”

Lemme rephrase this: The Master always escapes.

But the whole Chosen One thingy is about him destroying the Sith and bringing balance to the force. If he didn’t actually kill the last Sith, that makes the whole thing seem really stupid. I know some people didn’t like the prophecy, but that doesn’t mean you can just ignore it and pretend it never happened.

Idk. I like the Prequels but the Prophecy I can take it or leave it. Doesn’t really do much either way.

Anyway, Palpatine coming back as a clone feels super cheap and cheesy. Besides, Palpatine is one of the two most powerful mortal Force users in the Galaxy (the other of course being Yoda). And I ain’t talking potential and mid-chlorian counts, just in terms of what they are capable of. Therefore, it stands to reason that it is plausible for him to survive being thrown down a reactor shaft. Luke survived such a fall no problem. Yes, there was also Force lightning, but it was his Force lightning, so it’s reasonable to suggest he had enough control over it to at least not kill himself. Then again, that’s how he dies in TRoS and has his true face revealed in RotS, so who knows. But hey, points for poetry for having every trilogy end with Palpatine electrocuting himself.

This ain’t a Doctor Who episode either. 😉

Did you even watch the scene? He literally EXPLODED after Vader threw him down that shaft. Just spontaneously combusted with a burst of evil energy. There’s no way his body could have survived that.

And I still don’t see how Palpy in TROS being a clone is any more “super cheap and cheesy” than a plot point plucked straight out of 30’s Flash Gordon serials and 70’s Doctor Who episodes.

At least with him being a clone, you can justify that he technically died, but just came back a shell >of his former self.

Exactly. As I said above, it actually HELPS the Star Wars universe’s plothole to show why you can’t just clone everyone who died. It also helps those who hate Midichlorians, since it shows that even the best science-designed force-attuned body still doesn’t work right.

And a 2020 episode! Just sayin’.

A 2020 episode that sucked, from what I heard. 😉

Either way, I still feel like explaining Palpy’s return by saying “he escaped” is really cliche’d and dumb, and I think him being a clone fits much more with the 4D chess he’s been doing for the entire saga. Cloning is the much better option for me.

I don’t like the cloning idea because it just raises an inevitable question at the end of TROS: is he really dead? Surely he must have a plan Z - another load of clone bodies somewhere! Bleh. I know canonically his decrepit form in TROS is because the cloning was imperfect or whatever, but when I first saw the movie I just presumed he looked like a corpse because he literally was a corpse being Darth Sion’d back to “life”. The Frankenstein imagery of the big claw also compounded this. Luckily, TROS is a great movie for headcanon since most of the plot around Palpatine is exclusive to the novelisation, so I can continue to gleefully ignore whatever I don’t like until Filoni or Soule or someone redeems it.

I don’t think that question is much of a problem. His interactions with Rey and Kylo seem to show that there are no other clone bodies he can transfer to, and his only hope is getting another Force user to let him possess them. When Rey decides not to use her hatred to kill Palpatine, his last resort was eliminated, and he was basically doomed to permanent death.

Agreed. And I also like to think that, now with the direct intervention of the Force ghosts, Palpatine’s been destroyed on a spiritual level.

Doesn’t the fact he survived being vaporized in ROTJ raise that question forever now?

No, because there were two lightsabers being used.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Has anyone ever tried to remove or change Ben addressing Vader as ‘Darth’ in the original film?

I’m not sure, but I feel it’d be pretty easy. Ben says “Vader” enough throughout the trilogy.

I think the main challenge would be correcting Ben’s lip-syncing to fit with the new lines.

Not really a radical idea, but I would like to have a version of the original trilogy that didn’t have the episode numbers in the opening crawl.

A few years back, there was an “Erasing the Prequels Entirely” thread, where I made something like that by masking out the Episode Numbers.

The people in the thread thought it would be a better idea to have no episode title in the crawl at all, and to change the logos. I agree that would be a better idea, but doing that with Blender or something like it kind of always makes it look out of place. At least in my opinion.

Has anyone been able to add Veer’s death to the Battle of Hoth in some way?

I know this would probably be something that most people would say no to, but I think it’d be really cool to have a scene of Vader wiping out Jedi in a duel as a new extended intro for A New Hope. It would be a fierce duel against multiple remaining Jedi that have all come out of hiding and teamed up in coordination with the Rebel Alliance as a distraction from the Battle of Scarif so that Vader is occupied during the battle to increase the Rebels chances of successfully retrieving the plans. The odds would be way against him but he of course would prevail due to his sheer skill and strength (being the most powerful force user at the time of course), before being notified about the Battle of Scarif. So we see what he was doing between his meeting with Krennic and his arrival at the Battle of Scarif. Maybe he gets his chest plate damaged so after the duel he temporarily swaps it with an inferior smaller one until he gets a new one, which is why his chest plate is different in ANH from the rest of the saga. I think it’d work as a way of showcasing how much of a powerful juggernaut Vader is, thereby making him more terrifying and threatening overall in the OT, and so all of Vader’s best feats aren’t just from the comics and other supplemental material. Plus IMO more lightsaber duels in the OT wouldn’t be a bad thing. I think it’d be awesome and no harm done, especially if its just an alternate version.

It’s something I’d love to do as an alternate version of my ANH fan-edit. As for how to actually make it, basically my thought would be using footage from fan-films a lot like daneditor did with his ROTJ radical edit. Episode 2 of Star Wars Theory’s Vader fan-film looks promising; Mace Windu could just be edited to be another Jedi by changing his lightsaber color, and there’s also going to be other Jedi aiding him in the fan-film (the concept art looks really awesome), and I’m sure we’ll see them duel Vader. I could just take clips from the duel(s) and compile them together to be coherent. I mean, the thing isn’t out yet so there really isn’t any way to predict exactly what it’ll be like but from what I know right now I could see it as a definite possibility.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney soon does an Order 66 story in a movie or in the Obi-Wan show.
