My nephews love the stuff - and are just at the age where they are building their own ships, houses and bases with lego bricks - rather than just sticking to the instructions.
Bloody expensive though. Also quite funny to see all the middle aged men (myself included) in the Lego stores looking at all the lego goodness - with their kids looking on - knowing they won’t get a chance to get near them as their dads take over and build it all 😃

I mean, the original years were awesome, but I reckon it only got better the more they expanded the history and the lore. I think 2008 was it’s creative peak.

Nope. The characters after the original run looked dumb and the ‘lore expansion’ was convoluted and unnecessarily deep. I mean, you can like all that, opinions are opinions, I just don’t think anything after the originals are worth their plastic. And I’m someone who was in love with all the toys and all three movies back ten years ago.
I’m actually a big fan of the official flash game animations and comics from those first few years.

I saw it back in the day. General rule is any Lego animation that isn’t one of the Lego Movies is crap. Most of the jokes sound like they’re aiming for a demographic of 4-year-olds. Even as a kid I felt looked down on. That said, they occasionally have some good jokes, like Windu Wash, or the tuba over the sarlacc pit. The Padawan Menace was decent. I guess so was Atlantis.
I love how deep Bionicle lore was. Nowadays, Lego has figured out and refined a formula that works for them for original story-driven themes (Ninjago, Chima, Nexo Knights), but it will reach the same creative peak. That said, Bionicle’s complex lore was ultimately its undoing. I guess this sort of stuff is best left to other companies, rather than the toy manufacturers themselves. After all, Star Wars, Marvel, and DC Lego is doing great.
When they tried to say that the island of Mata Nui was a giant dudes face, they lost me completely.

I just about wore out the Lego Idea book from the 90’s:
With three of us kids, we had enough legos to make absolutely epic castles with full baileys and keeps and forests. Our inspiration mostly came from our neighbor, who was somewhat older than we were and had a custom castle that was much larger and more impressive than we could achieve. It was he who gave us the idea book. He had more of the 80’s sets as well, and a lot of space sets.
We mostly got the later stuff such as the Dragon Masters and Black Knights sets, and Space Police.
