Man, this whole topic is ridiculous. Nobody makes a WII HATING THREAD or a X-BOX HATING THREAD. Seriously, what is with people and this stupid "LOL MY CONSOLE IS BETTER THAN YOUR'S" mentality? The bottom line is it's all purely subjective, so it's stupid to argue over it, and it's even dumber to just PICK FIGHTS about it. Like, nobody was even going around saying "i like the ps3" BUT NO WE NEED A TOPIC ABOUT HOW MUCH WE HATE IT BECAUSE GRR 70 BUCKS WHAT THE HELL?! I mean, it's basically the same as going around saying "my religion is better than your's!"

When the PS2 came out, games were 60 bucks. 70 is only 10 dollars higher. Besides, after it's out for a few months, they'll start getting a greatest hits list and games will go down.

See, this is what bugs me. Can't people just PLAY THE GAMES instead of worrying about WHO'S BETTER?

Who here will actually buy one?

Me. I'm not going to be picking it up when it first comes out, because $600 is ridiculous, no matter how you look at it. But I definitely plan on getting one, simply because I prefer the game catalog. Oh wait, I'm sorry. What I meant to say was I HATE YOUR STUPID WII GRRR COMPETITION COMPETITION COMPETITION!

Yes, obviously.

Besides from seeing 100$ N64 games no.

This is the second time you've done this, so I think it's safe to assume it wasn't a typo, but the dollar sign goes before the number. Also, I guess it depends on your definition of high priced, but the games for the Game Cube, PS2 and X-Box were all around 50-60 when they first came out. So, uh... yeah, 70 is such a huge difference.

NOT necessary. Dead thread anyone?

In Australia, nearly every game is $100 upon release, which to my estimation is somewhere in the neighbourhood of $70 US, depending on the exchange rate at the time. XBox 360 games are $110 at the moment, so while we might be getting ripped off all the time, consider yourselves lucky you can buy a next-gen game for less than $80 US.

Calm down, people! If sean wants a PS3 Hating Thread, and other people want to post in it, it's not that big of a deal.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I remember seeing the SNES Aladdin for $59.99 back when it was first released, but that's why the game industry transitioned away from cartridges.

Once again, the production costs of blu-ray come back to bite Sony. They'll lose money on the system, and the retooling costs for the factories to stamp blu-ray disks are going to hurt game production costs.

The PS3 is too expensive all around. The system, games and everything else is just too much. You can't price systems that much above the competition and win. Anyone remember the 3DO? Neo-Geo? Both of these systems tried "premium pricing" and were siginifigantly more expensive than the competition at the time. In the end, they didn't sell because no one could afford them.

considering that the system will have a blu ray player integrated as well as top of the line hardware (more powerful than that of xbox 360 and the Wii) i dont see what anyone is complaining about...

its fine if you cant afford it but don't bash the system..
hell i can guarantee you it will outsell the competition without a doubt...

and it really goes to show your knowledge on pricing of games.. why not go take a look at what an xbox 360 game costs at your local best buy...

Yeah, but for how many people will this high-end blu ray player really help? To really take advantage of what it offers, you need an HDTV which most people do not have and are not planning on getting for some time (at least until prices are more manageable). So, if you do not have such a TV, you must spend anywhere from US$800-4000 for the blu ray to be worthwhile. Suddenly, the cost of the system due to extra hardware costs, jumps through the roof.

What Sony should be doing is putting out a third system that does not have the Blu Ray player built in to it. Me? I could care less about it. When the time comes that I'm forced to upgrade to HD-DVD (and it won't happen until I'm forced), I'm buying a dedicated HD-DVD player, not a PS3. With the PlayStation's breakdown rate in the PS2 era (which I attribute to it being used as a DVD player), I wouldn't want to put all my eggs in one basket relying on the PS3 as both a gaming system and an HD-DVD player. It breaks down, I'm screwed on two fronts instead of just one.

Nintendo has it right. Focus on gaming. Leave it at that.

I remember back in the days of NES, Star Wars was 49.99 GBP (no pound sign on this US keyboard). 49.99 in the late 80s!! I never did get that game because I could never afford it. Hell, I couldn't even afford it today for 49.99. Computer games are a rip off. Best to wait a few months for when they release the titles on their platinum series or whatever it's called.

Don't forget that the 20GB version will not have the good Blu Ray-out connections so you can hook it up to your TV. In effect, if you want to use the Blu Ray, you need the $600 unit. Sony is making two models, but effectively forcing you to buy the higher-end model. I'll bet this will also be reflected in production quantities. The $400 model will have few to none actually made. There will be some to cater to those who don't know any better. But, the bulk of their production efforts will be on the $600 jobber.

While this isn't the textbook definition, it strikes me as a variant of bait and switch. You offer Blu Ray capabilities, but, you know what, it only really works on the expensive model. Wonder if there will be a legal flap over this at all.

Very true. The price never sustains that level.
When I got my NES in 1998 (yes, I did say 1998...$5 at a garage sale with 3 controllers, 8 games and 2 light guns), I traded in 2 of the games. I could get 50 cents each, or $1 of in-store trade value.

Geez. 50 Pounds? For an NES game? Holy crap. There is no way I'd pay $100 or more for a single video game.

I think that a lot of people don't really understand the whole blu-ray/HD-DVD thing, and are simply waiting for the format war to be settled and a 'winner' to emerge. So I think that the fact that a PS3 has a blu-ray won't be much of a motivation. There will be too many people afraid that if they will get the 'wrong player'. So they will buy it for the game system, and if HD-DVD wins, PS3 is even in more trouble. I still say that they have to get the price down. Video game history is full of cases where the better technology system lost out because it was too much or best games were on another system. See Atari Lynx, Atari Jaguar, 3DO, Phillips CD-i, Colecovision, etc...
