Anyhow, good news is a have a dvdr of this with a menu including the trailer, unfortunalty the feature is the not the best quality as the laserdisc transfer itself was a quite poor, drop me a pm if you would like a copy.

Cheers.

I have one, as I already posted. I wanted to make my own transfer from yours and have it be dual-layer. I guess we're back to square one.

I also have a DVD-R version, from LD. I'll have to dig it out, and see exactly what it contains.
Probably just the film and a trailer at best. I do know it contains menus, so perhaps its the
same disc others have.

I too have 2 DVD'r versions,1 widescreen(or LB)and Fullscreen versions, both with basic menu and the widescreen version has the trailer, not bad quality, but the point here was that DigitalFreakNYC,was going to capture the Japanese LD and author a new better set, correct me if i am wrong Digital.

There was a version of the Japanese widescreen laserdisc on MySpleen a long while ago, and despite efforts from myself and others (for over two years now), no-one will re-upload or re-seed the torrent that's till there (although dead).

Here's the blurb from the MySpleen torrent -

This is a DVD transfer of the wide-screen japanese laserdisc of the movie The Monster Squad. For those who know, the laserdisc is quite expensive and very rare. It is also the only way to see the film in it's original wide-screen aspect ratio since it's 1987 theatrical run. While there are many rips of it available on e-bay, I wanted to do something a little extra with it.

With all the new OT Star Wars rips available as of late, I used popular opinion to judge my approach & learned quite a bit in the process. My disk specs are as follows...

Non-anamorphic wide-screen captured from S-Video
Uncompressed PCM audio
Full menu system with scene selections
Original theatrical trailer
DVD-Rom directory with 300dpi printable cover

What's most unique about this transfer however, is that I have removed the inherent burnt-in japanese subtitles, re-framed the picture to center screen and added clean letterboxing. Being a video purist, I made no attempt to alter the video quality from it's laserdisc counterpart. What you will see is a direct representation of quality from this very rare 1989 laserdisc print of Monster Squad. Rumor has it that this movie will never be released to any new medium due to supposed character rights, so I have no doubt that this will remain the definitive copy of Monster Squad until such time that it is outdone by another loyal fan.

Whether you like my end product or not, I'm making this available as a MySpleen exclusive with the intent of offering a viable backup solution to the proper owners of this laserdisc as a token of my appreciation to this community for bringing so many rarities that are almost impossible to come by in normal channels. I am not opposed to seeing this torrent on other trackers, However I leave that solely at the discretion of the MySpleen admins. As for the .iso image itself, please feel free to distribute it in any way you see fit, providing that you do so with the intent of offering it as a viable backup solution to owners of this rare laserdisc and that you always include the printable cover as part of the final product. It's so boss.

Hopefully if someone here has it, or has another widescreen rip, could they upload it somewhere, so that others may enjoy?

Cheers!

It can be yours for only 195 Bux....

Speaking of Fred Drekker, has anyone seen a copy of 'Night of the Creeps' on DVD?

Monster Squad is an all-time favourite mine, so I do hope it comes out officially on DVD someday. Until then, someone on the DVD Talk forums posted that:
For anyone interested and has VOOM's MONSTERS HD ( Dish Network ), they are showing it again this month.
JUNE 17 - 9:15AM
JUNE 24 - 8:15AM
JUNE 25 - 11:00AM

Not sure what time zone those are though. So if you happen to subscribe and have a DVR or DVD recorder, now is your chance to get a really nice copy.

If anyone who's capable of grabbing it this month (and hopefully in OAR), it sounds like it would make a great start for a preservation project.
The original Star Wars trilogy: Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and should be available to the public like all great works of art!

@winman42 - Is yours in widescreen without the Japanese subtitles as the MySpleen NFO states? Is the picture centered on the screen? And most important, how is the picture quality?

Edit - winman42, turn on your PM's.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. The Monster Squad was a favorite of mine as a kid.

Are there any new developments?

Nope. No one has offered up their laserdisc...if anyone has it.

A few of us have shitty bootleg versions but they're not worth torrenting, IMHO.

If you don't care, then just get one of the bootlegs that are already out there.

I'd rather see it in the proper aspect ratio than not.
Author

I ment that it would be in HD.
Author
Time
Sure...hd is nice but if it's not in the proper aspect ratio, it's only slightly a step up.

Besides, those Voom channels are very rare. Few people have them.

This will probably sound really stupid but, was the film shot in widescreen? It looks to me like it might have been open matte therefor the one being broadcast might just be the original with out matte lines, just like Army of Darkness.
Author
Time
It was released theatrically in around 2.35:1 ratio - as was the Laserdisc - the VHS/TV version are P&S - in one of the threads on the old MySpleen Forum there were screenshots showing the difference between the VHS and the Laserdisc.

Oh hell yeah. You lose half the picture. It's HORRIBLY cropped in the full-screen version.
