Ah, well. I was thinking about trying to cobble together a custom GOUT-sourced sound mix, pulling in some of Adywan's audio where he used bits from the mono mix.

So much of the mono mix ended up in subsequent home video releases, yet so did new changes.

My stance on revising fan edits.

A 5.1 mix based on the mono mix would be ideal.

Man, that would be the bee's knees.

I wish we could get the M&E used for the original foreign dubs - pretty sure they existed in stereo and were based on the mono mix.

I'd guess you would start with the mono elements found in the 97 SE 5.1 mix. That way you could get clean versions of "Close the blast doors!", Leia's .44, the tractor beam line etc.

Don't forget the Story of Star Wars LP - some clean elements on that as well, inc. the blast doors line.

-1 Can I ask how you capture this audio? Are you just recording off a projection set up...or is there some other way? (optical scans?)

Also since I doubt the film doesnt have any sort of stretching, how do you plan on precisely matching it to the film footage?

the cleanup of Beru's lines is one of the things that has never been addressed. It is so obviously dubbed in the stereo mix, right down the the DVD and Blu-ray release, yet in the mono-mix it sounds so much more natural. I would love to have a 5.1 track with this fixed.

What's wrong with the actual mono mix? do people really need 5.1 or 7.1 audio in order to appreciate a good sounding mix these days? No wonder we so often see original mixes absent on new video releases these days.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I wonder if anyone on this thread can offer me help as per my request below.

"Is it still possible to download the mono mix recording for Star Wars produced by Belbucus or even obtain a Star Wars film which has the mono mix sound version? Thanks for any help you can give me, Best regards, John

I have already contacted a number of people, about this - so far without any results. I would really be grateful for any assistance you could give me.

I have the file in apple lossless on a harddrive somewhere I think.

Otherwise, Harmy's versions have it.

It's available on Usenet in alt.binaries.starwars.

Hey guys,

New here and haven't read this thread in it's entirity. However, if anyone is interested I have the mono mix on a first-generation recording on VHS from swedish television back in the eighties. Needles to say it is the quality that vcrs from those days produced.

It is also a PAL recording, meaning it would be 25 fps, but that can be adjusted I believe.

The original VHS is in storage somewhere, but I made a dvd-r recording a while back and could easily extract the audio in ac3.

You probably have no need for this - but let me know if you do!

Quite the opposite. The TV broadcast in full - audio and video - is of interest!!

Please make the DVD-R available!

(I can upload it for you if you're limited on bandwidth, but you'd have to snail-mail me a copy first. I've done this for other OT.com members in the past, so I assure you I'm not just trying to get a free DVD... :-)

Nice, another swede... Hello Hefa and welcome to the forum! Like russ said, both audio and video are of great interest, see this thread: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/1983-UK-TVS-Star-Wars-premiere-anybody-still-have-a-recording/topic/14122/  As we in Sweden didn't have ad breaks on the few channels we had back in the early 80's this may be a more complete version of this telecine master if it proves to be the same as the one broadcasted on UK television that is, there will of course be swedish subs in picture...

Yep, no ads and swedish subs in the picture. It's from an old tape so it's not fantastic in quality. But no ads and I think it's complete. Pan & scan of course :(

It would be fantastic if you are willing to share your recording with the community here, questionable quality or not. If you aren't able to upload it yourself, I am also willing to help out, domestic mail would be a lot easier and faster after all. Do you remember exactly what year it was recorded? And are you perhaps able to post a screenshot or two from it, the frame in this post for example: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/1983-UK-TVS-Star-Wars-premiere-anybody-still-have-a-recording/post/607849/#TopicPost607849

Hmm, I guess the reason they made a mono theatrical soundtrack version, even though the original theatrical soundtrack of Star Wars was in stereo and was intended to be in stereo, was because some theaters back then couldn't handle stereo sound?

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Author

That's exactly it. Dolby stereo is backwards compatible with earlier mono systems but since Star Wars was the first film to complete its soundtrack in the then new system, they didn't want to take the chance if there were problems. So the mono mix was created with further tweaks made by George Lucas.

Btw, whatever happened with this 1st generation VHS tape version?
