Funny you should mention VCD. I just snagged a legit one that came out around the same time as the HK Laserdisc.

The cover art is identical to the LD, except for the format logos. I'll post some screencaps when it arrives.
Where were you in '77?
@SilverWook: Interesting, but what worries me is the release date saying 2000-10-01. That would mean it could be just a downscale of the official DVD.
Yes, a year after the HK LD release.

We'll find out when I get it. The color differences should be obvious if there are any?

By the way, here's something I found when searching for info on the screener. Taken from this page.
When Neo is running from the agents near the end, he jumps off a fire escape and lands on a pile of garbage. When we see him (stunt double) land, we can see that there is a cushion with the garbage placed on top. Note: This is only seen in the open matte version, and not in the widescreen version where the cushion would have been out of frame.
... Does anybody know more of these things that one could find in this version?
This is excellent! With all that extra space from the final framing, there must be more of these intriguing, behind-the-scenes reveals.

Correct, I can obtain the 35mm version for about a grand or so, but I have no money left. If anyone wants this preserved, they would need to go hither and find some funding to get the print purchased. I can do the rest from there, but I quite literally cannot afford the print.

Well, would a MySpleen.org account help make up for the loss? :-)

It's odd there was never a full frame DVD version. There were fullscreen releases for the sequels.

LOL, thanks! But "Your message can't be delivered because this user has reached their private message limit. A notification e-mail has been sent to alert them."
It looks like his inbox has been full since at least July so if someone else could invite me (I don't even know if it's possible?) I would certainly appreciate it! Like.. A LOT!
I've tried to color correct the whole movie to match this purple/pink tint (that might be the original and theatrical one.) Based on the PAL DVD slowed down to 23,976 fps I've made a 1.58 GB file with the DTS theatrical audio downscaled to AC3 384 Kbps. I'm currently uploading the files, if anybody is interested just send me a PM.

As promised, here you are some more Matrix laserdisc screenshots:

OK, they are only pictures of the screen, but they give you an idea... for example, the agent Smith interview with Neo is white-greyish! Mmmhhh, something to think about...
Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com
Anyway, the seller will hold the 35mm print for a week. If anyone knows of a Matrix fan group or something, then 50 people at $20 each would secure the print for future use.
I would think there would be 50 people out there that would be interested in seeing the theatrical version.

Actually, I suspect that the VHS screeners predates the theatrical prints, and that it's the reason why it's so pink overall, that they hadn't finished the color timing. But only a 35mm print would prove this to be true or wrong.
Believe me poita, if I had the money I'd donate it.

I think the white-balance on his camera is off. Also, his TV might not be calibrated.

There must be some other appreciation groups out there that have a bigger userbase where some interest could be drummed up. I worked on this film so have a special interest in it, but I am so far in the hole with SW restorations and other Disney stuff that I will literally have to sell a kid to put any more in :)

Is anybody registered over there? Perhaps the guy with the LD could confirm whether or not the interview scene actually looks that natural on his TV.
Or could someone with the DVD to hand take a screen pic and see if their camera white-balances out the green?

This is most definitely not natural, definitely the colors of the film should not look washed out like this. It's his TV/camera.
Got the VCD today. Any specific scenes I should take caps of?

Is it too much to hope your new VCD looks anything like the VCD open-matte screener in the framing compare above? :O

Wow, I guess we really can't tell anything about actual displayed colours from a screen photo! That's very enlightening. Thanks Spaced Ranger.
