These guys seem to have been forgotten by my generation, yet they remain my favorite comedy act. Any more fans on this site?

I am a big fan of their work. Nanner, did you know there were actually 5 Marx Brothers?

Indeed, but Gummo Marx quit their comedy act before they started doing movies. I was never really that fond of Zeppo either. Him and Shemp from the Three Stooges just seem to be of lesser quality than the rest of their respective groups.

Hmm, Gummo was the only one I never knew of. The more you know...

But, yeah, I think it's sad that so many people nowadays don't know of the Marx Brothers. My introduction to them were as a child through Tiny Toons and the Harpo episode of I Love Lucy.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I will have to disagree with you on Shemp. If you want inferior stooges, look at Joe Besser and Curly Joe Dorito. Shemp is a very good stooge imho. Did you know he is actually the original stooge to appear with Moe and Larry and not Curly?

I am a huge Marx brothers fan, specially Groucho.

"One day I shot an elephant on my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas, I'll never know."

"This report is so simple even a child of five can understand it! Fetch me a child of five."

"We don't have time to dig trenches. We'll have to buy them made. Get tranches this high (points to waist) and our soldiers won't have to wear trousers. On a second thought, get them this high (points to neck) and our soldiers won't need uniforms. Better yet, get them this high (points to above his head) and we won't need any soldiers!"

(as a hotel clerk)
"What? Ice on room 84? Really? Where did you find it? Ohhh, you want some!"

One day, while Groucho was performing on vaudeville, Harpo got into the middle of the performance, following a screaming woman, just to disturb Groucho's performance. Groucho just picked up his pocket clock and said "The three fifteen is right on time."
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

The Marx Brothers are great. My personal favorite movie was Horse Feathers, where they are at the college. His song on that "Whatever it is, I'm against it" was hilarious. And Groucho's lecture in the classroom with Chico and Harpo was also great.
Another great bit of theirs was the "crowded stateroom", where all those people were in the stateroom on the cruise ship. I forget what movie that was, through.

Anyone ever watch "You Bet Your Life" with Groucho? That was a good show. It was a game show, but most of it was Groucho interviewing the contestants to try to get them to "say the secret word". Of course wisecracks abounded. Several episodes can usually be found in the bargain DVD bin at Wal-Mart or some other like store.

The "crowded stateroom" scene is featured in "A Night at the Opera", my personal favorite of theirs.

What an interesting coincidence that this thread get started today.

I went to work yesterday (Halloween) as Groucho Marx. Maybe I'll share a photo...

I've enjoyed the Marx Brothers since I was 4-5 years old. My parents have told me that watching their movies taught me to talk. I've got all their movies on DVD. 2 sets that were released in the last year, plus I recently picked up Love Happy (which also happens to include one of Marilyn Monroe's first appearances and a man named Raymond Burr who would later go on to become famous as Perry Mason).

I watched most of the films in the last month to get ready for Halloween, and I have to say I think Animal Crackers is probably my favorite. Groucho's interaction with Rosco W. Chandler and Emmanuel Ravelli (Chico) are great.
We must remember that art is art. Still on the other hand water is water. And east is east and west is west, and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesause it tastes much more like prunes than rubbarb does.
Now, ahh, you tell what you know.

Then you have Groucho's speech about his trip to Africa.

I was eating a Pop-Tart (well, actually an organic toaster pastry) when I read that, and I almost choked on it.

Thanks, YIYF. You almost killed me.

Well, it's friday, so the week's nearly over and Rik can soon return to his comedy throne, to which I admit I am a mere pretender.

I'm more like Robert DeNiro's character in King of Comedy.

My favorite comedy team of all time.  I grew up watching their films on PBS.

If you can track down a copy Groucho's book Groucho and me is well worth reading.

"They got gun, we've got guns , all of god's children got guns."

I am pretty sure that verse is the state song of Texas.
