The Mandalorian - Star Wars Live action TV series — Page 7

Judging by some of the leaked footage, it seems like Werner Herzog is going to have a bigger role than previously implied/assumed. He’s apparently a leader, or at least a member of, an Imperial Remnant group with the goal of restoring the “natural order” of things, including the role of the Mandalorians. This could of course end up as being the plot of just one episode, but either way, I’m really excited about seeing the Imperial Remnant in canon as the post-ROTJ era was always my favourite part of Legends.

I also really liked the music that we’ve heard so far. It has a clear spagetthi-western vibe to it, but without sounding derivative or cliched, and with more of a South-American feel to it.

Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here?
And say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

I just watched a couple of interviews with Gina Carano and I gotta say… I’m so excited for her. She is radiating with such an honest, grateful vibe (also damn gorgeous!). She admitted that she’s a total newbie when it comes to all the lore etc, but she was enthusiastic to absorb all the information Filoni and Favreau provided her. I know she hasn’t been the best actress around (she’s an ex-fighter after all) but if you need a female who you can believe to kick some ass, Gina Carano is the one to hire. Hopefully this will be her best performance so far.

This looks amazing! Loved seeing the dusty Jawas! Really drives home the fact that pretty much every aspect of this show is “original trilogy but gritty.” Can’t wait!

Also, Pascal seems to be doing great in the lead role, based on the one scene we’ve seen so far. He delivered the line “I like those odds” perfectly.

On Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., the highly anticipated streaming service Disney+ will give guests a first look at some of its original content including Lady and the Tramp, The Mandalorian, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and many more during this star-studded presentation.

Hopefully they’ll release a proper trailer soon. I find it strange that the trailer, sizzle reel, etc. have only been shown at Star Wars Celebration. The response was very positive, both by those at Celebration and those who’s seen the unofficial footage on YT, so I’m wondering why they haven’t officially made it public yet. You’d think they’d market this a lot more as its one of the Disney+ launch series. I don’t think most casual fans even know it exists.

I really hope the lack of marketing isn’t intentional on Disney’s part, but there’s something in the back of my mind telling me that it’s a possibility. Maybe they’re concerned about it being a flop, so they’re opting not to draw attention to it. I really hope I’m wrong… it looks pretty promising from what I’ve managed to see. Another thing to think about is that it may end up being a departure from the other recently produced Star Wars stuff in terms of maturity, which might be reason for them to shy away from putting it out there so to say. Only time will tell…

I think they’re simply letting Galaxy’s Edge have it’s time in the limelight. If they’re nervous about anything it’s putting out too much Star Wars hype at once.

I’m sure there will be a HUGE amount of marketing and hype for Disney+ and naturally for The Mandalorian since it’s available day one.

I think Disney+ will be a bigger game changer than anyone realizes.

^ Loving the enclosed video from Celebration 2017 there - looks like they all had a lot of fun doing that 😃

It sounds a bit like something I saw in a BTS video about the Hobbit films where Peter Jackson walked around an empty room with a steadi-cam and it added his movement to a 3D environment that he could see on the camera monitor. Essentially it allowed him to move freely around this CGI scene with realistic camera movements. I’m guessing ILM have made something similar for this show. The term “in camera” seems weird to me though, but it could simply mean that they can see the CGI extensions on the monitors while they film. However, I can’t find any reasons why they wouldn’t just film the actors on green-screen and then add the backgrounds in post. That would certainly work better, unless there’s some new technology I’m not aware of which can remove green-screen flawlessly “in-camera”.

I was a bit surprised at his comparison to the Lion King sets because all the footage that has been shown so far has mostly been real sets. Though since all the videos online has such poor resolution I guess most of the far-off backgrounds could have been made using this technique.

I think they literally mean in-camera. Favreau said there’s a video wall that extends the background of the set by displaying it in parallax. So as the camera moves around the set the game engine perfectly changes perspective to complete the illusion.

It’s basically like that scene in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, just with camera-tracking instead of eye-tracking.

Ah, I see. So it’s literally a rear-screen projection that tracks the movement of the camera.

For a while I was thinking it was maybe more like a digital version of front-screen projection, which I’d imagine would be cheaper, but I don’t really know how they’d actually pull that off (with current tech anyway). So for the Mandalorian they’re basically doing this, but with the ability to move the camera pretty much anywhere they want.

Has the pilot aired yet? Is it any good? What channel is it on?

It’s going to be on Disney’s streaming service. Wouldn’t surprise me if they did show it on ABC as a cross promotional stunt.

FYI, Disney+ (the streaming service in question) debuts in November, and I believe The Mandalorian is supposed to be available on day 1.

And also, they said they are releasing each episode one at a time more like a traditional show.

Hey, if they’re only charging six bucks a month then we can’t reasonably expect the money-making behemoth known as Disney to just put the whole first season up all at once. Didn’t I read somewhere that they budgeted the first season at a hundred million?

I think I actually prefer that method of release. It gives you something to look forward to each week instead of binge watching the whole season in one or two sittings and then be left waiting a whole year (or two for GoT) for the next one.

In regards to budget, I heard each episode cost around $15M each which is about what each GoT episode cost for the final season.

As someone who’s taken to waiting until a season is finished before even watching the first episode for 90% of the show’s I watch…this news really sucks.
