Well, in my opinion, if you dont wanna cut all the great stuff, you should divide it into two movies (suposing it Will go like that) :

1st one: Mando’s Journey to find the Jedi. Trimmed 1st ep, some bits of the 2nd ep, Episodes 3,4,5 with some Trimmed moments of course. At the end, it turns out that the protagonist has to follow another path. Maybe as a cliffhanger, or a postcredid scene, you could move the last scene of the 2x4 😉

2nd one: suposing we d get the 2part finale at least, the shorter 1h30movie.

Thats the only Way i can think of when it comes to a movie format of s02. This season is So much better than the 1st one. The first one, i think I ll always prefer to watch your fanedit as a pilot movie, but the second one, damn, i May even rewatch it all again 😯 anyway, waiting to See how you gonna deal with it 💪🏽

Annoyingly I get the feeling there will be about a film and a half worth of material in season 2.

Well, you can always try with 3 shorter movies, doesn’t have to be 2h30 each I guess 😉

I ve been watching your edits since 2015 and I must say you evolved as an editor a lot in terms of cutting the stuff thats not crucial in story-wise terms 😉 I think, just an observation of a viewer of your edids 😅

I really don’t want to mess with Episode 1. It works so well as a 3-act movie, probably the best of all my film edits.

No, I meant 2 (or 3) shorter movies made out of the 2nd season. Not touching your ep I at all 😉

I think I t’ll be a choice between two 1.5 hour movies and one 2.5+ hour movie.

Depending on how these last couple episodes shake out, and how attached you are to the bulk of Chapters 9, 10, and 12, I think you can fit it into a 2-2.5hr film.

Episode 6 was awesome!! (spoilers)

If you’re aiming for 1 movie, I think you need the Boba hook at the start, so I’m thinking maybe you show Cobb and cut after Boba pulls his gun to him with the armor? Or you could use the jawa footage and maybe try to frame it as Boba buying it from the jawas. Then you could have the Boba shot while removing the bulk of that episode, and go right to the Bo Katan episode, straight from frog lady intro to the ocean planet and cut the part about the hyperspace eggs. It looks like Fennec is also gonna be a part of the crew though, so it might be easier to just frame her as a new character and cut the dialogue where her and Mando know each other. You might be able to do the same for Bill Burr’s character later but I suspect him and Mando will have some dialogue referencing S1 Ep 6.

You can shove the tracker/darktrooper scene in anywhere and remove a lot of that episode, but I think Ahsoka’s episode is a problem because you gotta see Mando get the spear and reveal the Grogu info (and Ahsoka is just awesome so I would love to see a lot of her)

Having 2 movies would definitely space things out more but I wouldn’t know what to end it on, maybe the Ahsoka episode?

Yes. I think that episode has just blown the single film plan out of the water. Difficulty now is deciding how to structure 2 films whilst giving a satisfying ending to the first one.

I would bring back season 1’s Tatooine episode (The Gunslinger) and merge it with Chapter 9. Introduces Boba and Fennec together. You could then take the beginning of Chapter 10, and do a comedic cut from it being dangerous to the broken down ship in The Heiress, using that episode as your third act. After, you can use the tag from The Seige as if one of the repair guys in that episode informed Gideon.

Film 2 could be The Jedi, The Tragedy, and the final two episodes.

And I still think the Gideon tag from the end of season one should be put at the end of the season 1 film.

I don’t think we need to see Bill Burr’s introduction, just like Lando’s origin wasn’t needed on screen.

At the moment I don’t need to put in The Gunslinger. I’ve edited out any reference to Mando knowing Fennic and it works. She’s just Boba’s sidekick or hire. Have to see if that still holds true by the end of the season. I’d like to avoid using the Gunslinger if I can because it really drags out the Tatooine stuff and I really don’t like Toro.

Annoyingly, from a film perspective, the best “end” to episode 2 would be the kidnap of the child. It would give it an ESB vibe. However, I’m then not left with enough material for Episode 3.

If you can avoid using the Gunslinger episode, then it’s perfect 👌🏽

Well, I think you should end the 2nd episode with the end of “The Jedi”, less dramatic, but pacing would be better I guess. You can always put the scene from 2x4 at the end 😉

I have no idea what you are gonna do about 2x5,but i think you should include it, in some trimmed version. Apart from being a cool action packed ep, it also revealed a lot of important stuff to the whole story.

Maybe the last 2 episodes will both be an hour long! I can dream 😃. There is the option of putting chapter 12 at the start of episode 3 since they are now on Nevarro, but I’ll have to see how the next 2 episodes pan out!

Well, it’s something that probably could be pulled if you find a way to cut it properly. Would definitely make sense

But yes, 2x 50min episodes would be perfect 😀

So disappointingly chapter 15 was pure filler. Some great individual moments like seeing inside Slave 1, seeing Din remove his helmet and the seismic charges. However, it’s 100% side quest.

However, it can be easily cut. I’ve moved the Gideon/Child scene forward slightly so that it occurs whilst Din and Boba are heading for Nevarro. Then I have the Din/Cara conversation which cuts to the Din holo transmission to Gideon - the implication being that Cara manages to get Gideon’s co-ordinates off screen.

Here’s hoping for a long final episode otherwise I’m going to be stuck in the horrible position of season 2 being too long for 1 film, but too short for 2 😦.

I’d keep 15 over The Siege. It has better character development for Din as he gives up wearing the helmet to save the child (which is huge for him). The Siege is pure filler, with only learning about the experiments… but we already knew about that from Season/Film 1.

There will certainly be a lot to think about think about after next weeks episode. The biggest problem with this season is the Razorcrest. It’s going to be a massive continuity bind.

Yeah, chapter 15 was a bummer. As you said, great individual moments but nothing more. Also I second the idea of keeping a bit more of The Siege. Perhaps you could trim the runtime if you cut both episodes to the absolut necessary.

To me, just pretend the Mon Cala actually repair it. He can pay for the repair and then cut to him flying in space all shiny and new, then cut to the repairman contacting Gideon.

The Siege doesn’t have any real character development, whereas Chapter 15 has a big sacrificial moment for him. It may feel like a “side quest”, but he’s giving up his cultural values to save Grogu. That’s huge, and very important to the main story.

This. I agree that The Siege is way less important than Chapter 15. The Siege is way more of a side quest that’s un-needed.

I’m personally of the opinion that you should keep Chapter 12, and cut Chapter 15. Cara and Greef are two of the main characters of your Season 1 edit, so their return would be satisfying for the audience. On the other hand, Mayfeld’s episode was cut from your edit, so he would just be some random guy that Mando knows for some reason. We already have two instances of characters who were cut earlier being reintroduced with no explanation, so if we had to add one more I would prefer the Mythrol rather than Mayfeld. The Mythrol’s role in Chapter 12 was small, so he could just be some random comic relief guy.

Also, I have a strong feeling those clone tanks are going to become important later. The Dark Troopers have already been confirmed to be droids, so it obviously has no relation to that. Whether it’s related to Palpatine or not (and I suspect it is), we know it’s going to be important. So I would rather keep that important bit of foreshadowing instead of an episode with nothing really critical to the story.

EDIT: And one more thing I forgot, if you cut Chapter 12 you lose Mando finding out that Gideon is alive. It’s a crucial element of the story, since Mando was sure he was dead previously. If you cut that, it creates a plot hole.

Author
Time
 (Edited)

Gideon is established as still being alive when he meets Bo-Katan, and it’s not like he starts hunting Gideon prior to Grogu’s capture… could be that Grogu’s capture is what establishes Gideon as being alive at all. Boba might even mention it, I know he mentioned Din being hunted.

The tanks will be re-introduced and explained if and when they become important, and everything we learn about Cara in The Siege is re-established in Chapter 15. Grief Carga was given closure, and we don’t really get any character development with him, Cara, or Din in The Siege.

So, while the tanks are fun, and seeing familiar faces that don’t contribute to the story or character development is fun, I think story beats and major character development to the protagonist should be prioritised.

To be honest, Episode 2 could potentially be around 160-170min, a lot would be cut from episode 15, and still work as a 3-act movie. It doesn’t have to be necessarily 150min flat in my opinion 😃

But even after Grogu was captured, Mando would still have no idea Gideon was alive. All he saw was some weird droids kidnapping Grogu, and a Star Destroyer jumping into hyperspace. Nothing that confirms Gideon’s survival. I still maintain that cutting Chapter 12 creates a plot hole because of that, and it should be kept in at least a trimmed fashion.

So, while the tanks are fun, and seeing familiar faces that don’t contribute to the story or character development is fun, I think story beats and major character development to the protagonist should be prioritised.

But the character development given to Din didn’t really last. He took his mask off, but after that he put it back on and pretended it never happened. Neither episode is really crucial to the character development, so I’d prefer the one that establishes several new plot elements over an episode where the changes don’t really have much consequence.

Ok let’s do the math

Chapter 11 - 35m
Chapter 13 - 47m
Chapter 14 - 33m
Chapter 15 - 38m

Overall - 153m

Subtract approximately 12 minutes for all the “previous on” and credits - 141m

Cut unnecessary / filler scenes, unsure of how much this could be so I’ll subtract 15 minutes to be safe - 126m

In that case, guessing Chapter 16 is 55 minutes - the movie would be max 181m. A three hour movie, but reasonable nonetheless. It could lower depending on how long Chapter 16 is and how much filler you could cut from the others.

I think it’s all possible in one movie.
