Love it or hate it, this is the first official picture of Brandon Routh (age: 25; approximate height: 6'2"; approximate weight: unknown) in Superman gear.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.

not really sure about what my opinion on him in the costume is (besides he doesnt look like Christopher Reeves) is that the red is awfully dark, more of a maroon then red.

The muscles don't look right... I'm sure it's official, but feels kinda "photoshop-esque". And who is that guy? Superman = Cristopher Reeve, not some teenage TV series actor...
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Actually he doesn't look too bad as Supes. I can dig it. The only problem I have is with the costume itself. I'm not sure about the logo looking so "rubbery" and superimposed on his chest.

And, is it just me, or does this guy have massive legs? I think he could leg press a bus.

I was just thinking the same thing. I don't think he looks too bad either, though I agree the suit could use some work.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I agree that he looks good as Superman, but the costume is bad. The red is waaaaaaaaaaaay off the tint it should be, and I agree with Bossk that logo looks too rubbery.

It kind of reminds me of Superman III, when Superman was put through this evil phase and his suit got darker and dirtier to reflect his surlier attitude. I'm not sure if I like it or dislike it, but I'm happy that they didn't put him in a black S&M leather jumpsuit (there were rumors, believe it or not, that they would ditch the classic look completely and just give him a black suit). I would rather have an older actor (mid-late 30s) playing Superman, but that's just me.

It's funny that you should mention that Brandon Routh looks like he could leg press a bus... most superheroes are generally drawn to look like steroid chomping body builder types (even the physically smaller ones like Spider-Man). That's always been kind of the rule of drawing superheroes, even back in the late 30s when comic book art was not the pique of artistic expression, Superman was always drawn to look a lot brawnier than the people around him. Most of the actors who play superheroes in the movies don't have that steroid look to them because the average actor is not a bodybuilder/weight lifter type. The late Christopher Reeve actually had to gain 30 pounds to play Superman in the 1978 film and even then he still looked very lean compared to his comic book counterpart. Michael Keaton was just plain thin when he played Batman; his successor, Val Kilmer, was bigger but still not the muscle-bound bruiser that Batman is drawn to look like. Ben Affleck had the similar in-between appearance for Daredevil, while Thomas Jane did look fairly muscular as the Punisher and Hugh Jackman also quite muscular as Wolverine (not to mention standing about a foot taller than Wolverine).

Here's hoping for the best...

Exactly. And while that costume was cool for an "Evil Superman," it just doesn't fly for the REAL suit. Doesn't fly...get it? Superman?

Here's my analysis:
The "S" is WAY too small (what would Alex Ross think?). It is also 3-D, which gives it a tacked-on look. While the suit is a good shade of blue, the red is...well it isn't red; it's maroon. Although the inside of the two-tone cape (!?!) seems to be the correct shade, that's not how things are supposed to work. The collar is too high. The "S" on the belt is alright, but totally unecessary. And there seems to be a diamond pattern in all of the materials.

You know, Dean Cain of "Lois and Clark" didn't have the best suits in Superman history, but they were a lot better than this lame attempt to "update" the look. Like "Batman Begins," the costume, which SHOULD be one of the best aspects of a superhero film, is sadly one of the weakest.

I personally think the costume designers were snorting something when they came up with this design
"Who's scruffy-lookin'?" - Han Solo
"I wish my lawn was emo so it would cut itself." -sybeman
"You know, putting animals in the microwave is not a good idea. I had to learn that one the hard way." -seanwookie

This looks awful. If they were going to make the red parts darker, why not go darker with the blue as well? And the stupid 3D Superman Logo! It's like made of rubber or plastic or something!

Maybe it's just one more reason why the film will (or should) flop horribly at the box office and turn Bryan Singer into the new laughing stock of Hollywood right behind George Lucas.

I doubt the film will flop, even if it is bad.

I have seen a number of top secret production drawings of suits that could have been, courtesy of a friend who works as a concept artist, and I have to tell you that this suit is fantastic compared to some of the crap that could have been. Superman in metal armour, anyone? I shit you not - they considered it.

War does not make one great.

the choice of colour is more in line with the original comic book version of the suit - colour limited by printing techniques...

also if you search for superman + george reeves pictures (he was the 1950's Superman) you will notice more of a similarity between that costume & this new version..

i personally like the new suit - it's modern yet retro...

perhaps this is also only a temporary costume in the film & may be replaced at some point by the 70's style bright red, blue & yellow suit..

just a few ideas
Evil dude: "You do not no pain, you do not know fear. You will taste MAN FLESH"

Evil ugly dudes: "YIPPEEEEEEEEE!!!!"

I just realized you could get a hi-res copy of the image and finally saw the diamond pattern that Commander Courage was mentioning. At least when viewed up close, the suit looks less rubbery and more like lycra.

Also, while looking at the huge mother image, I noticed how terrible the arch support in those boots is. Geez! That's just what we need... Superman with fallen arches! When he should be fighting crime, he's gonna be at the podiatrist's office! Some superhero.

I dunno. Now that I think about what DJJD said regarding original coloration and whatnot, I'm starting to like it. Still don't like the rubbery logo, but that's minor. Maybe it will be ripped off his chest by Kevin Spacey/Lex Luthor and that's why it sticks out so far, so Lex has something to grab on to.

I'm still bothered more by how young the new Superman looks - I'd rather he look like he's actually over 30 not some guy they picked off the OC.

chris reeves will always be the best superman.

But.. he's dead. He can't play superman.

That's why we need the new guy in the first place. (That and the whole two decades of paralysis thing, but who's keeping track?) *Rolls eyes*

I say we give the kid a chance; after all, the only thing that'll really sink the franchise is a crappy script; right?
