AÁNG hops to his feet and screams as he is pinned against the wall of ice.

SOKKA

(demandingly)

Who are you?

AÁNG

My name’s Aáng. I don’t want any trouble.

SOKKA

All right. How did you get out here? And why aren’t you frozen?

AÁNG

I don’t know. I think I was caught in a storm.

SOKKA lowers his spear in utter disbelief in what he just heard.

SÔKKA

Must’ve been some storm.

KATARA

Sokka, just leave him alone.

AÁNG starts to calm a bit.

AÁNG

Who, exactly, are you two?

KATARA

My name’s Katara, and the angry one’s Sokka.

SOKKA shoots her a brief glare.

ANGLE ON: AÁNG steps away from the wall and faces KATARA. He almost inadvertently puts his hood down.

CLOSE ON: KATARA stares in amazement at the boy’s tattoos.

ANGLE ON: AÁNG looks confusedly at her. He begins to move toward her.

AÁNG

What’s wrong?

He then falls from a sharp blow to the head. As he falls we see it was SÔKKA, who grips his spear guiltily.

ANGLE ON: KATARA stares at AÁNG’s once again lifeless body. She then looks, appalled, to SOKKA.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

INT. FIRE NATION – OZAI’S THRONE ROOM – DAY

WIDE ON: OZAI is seen against a decorative window, staring at it with a cup of tea. The sage runs up to him, panting heavily. OZAI barely turns his slightly to the noise.

OZAI

Yes?

SAGE

Sir…

ANGLE ON: The SAGE hesitates before continuing.

OZAI

Well? Get on with it.

He closes his eyes and exhales, before explaining.

SAGE

My lord. The Avatar… has returned.

CLOSE ON: OZAI’S teacup clatters to the ground.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

INT. FIRE NATION – WAR ROOM – DAY

ANGLE ON: A general, ZHAO, paces back and forth in front of OZAI, his fist on his chin.

OZAI

We cannot act as if we did not see this coming. For decades we’ve received the yearly warning about ‘the return of the Avatar’.

ZHAO

We’ve been caught entirely unprepared.

OZAI

What do you mean?

ZHAO

He’s had a century to master his bending, wherever he is. If he were to find us, he would surely destroy us as swiftly as he returns.

OZAI

You think I don’t know that?

ZHAO stops and looks at OZAI.

           OZAI (CONT’D)
Now, all we must do is find this Avatar. Sozin killed Roku with no great difficulty, we can do the same to this one, wherever he may be.

ZHAO

Well how do you submit that we find him?

OZAI

We do have one way…

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

EXT. ZUKO’S SHIP – MAIN DECK – DAY

WIDE ON: ÏROH sits at a SHOGI TABLE, playing against another crewman. ZUKO comes bursting onto the deck.

                ZUKO
Captain, set our course for the Southern Water Tribe.

CLOSE ON: ÏROH looks up at ZUKO, confused by his order.

CAPTAIN (O.S.)

Yes, sir.

ÏROH

What brought this on?

ANGLE ON: ZUKO approaches his uncle.

ZUKO

Uncle, I’ve seen him! The Avatar!

ÏROH

Where?

ZUKO

That light! The source has to be one of immense power!

ÏROH

You don’t know what it was.

ZUKO

(angrily)

What else could it have been?

                ÏROH
An apparition caused by the celestial lights. A simple figment of our racked minds.

ANGLE ON: ZUKO groans and walks away from his uncle.

ANGLE ON: ÏROH looks after him as ZUKO walks off to the railings.

ÏROH

It was only a light.

ZUKO

No! It was more than that. It was him. We’re going after it.

ANGLE ON: ZUKO approaches ÏROH’S SHOGI TABLE.

ZUKO (CONT’D)

I need to start training again.

ÏROH

Then go back inside and finish your meditation!

CLOSE ON: ZUKO stares angrily at ÏROH.

ANGLE ON: ÏROH holds up a small pocket clock.

ÏROH

Fifteen minutes. At least.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

EXT. SOUTHERN WATER TRIBE – DAY

WIDE ON: A small surrounding of hovels is seen around a fire pit. Several women are seen working around.

WATER TRIBE BOY #1 (V.O.)

So, who do you think it is?

ANGLE ON: Three ten-year-old children (one girl, two boys) are seen sitting in front of one of the hovels.

WATER TRIBE BOY #2

Whoever it is, they don’t want anyone knowing about him.

WATER TRIBE GIRL

Well, of course not! Can you imagine what Kanna would say?

WATER TRIBE BOY #1

You think it could be a flamer?

WATER TRIBE BOY #2

I don’t think so. Katara wouldn’t even let one of them set foot in the village.

WATER TRIBE GIRL

Well then who is it?

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

INT. SOUTHERN WATER TRIBE – HOVEL – DAY

ANGLE ON: KATARA tends to AÁNG on the bottom of a hovel, with a pot and fire next to them. SOKKA stands over them.

SOKKA

We shouldn’t have brought him back.

KATARA

Sokka, I really don’t want to hear this anymore.

SOKKA

So you don’t think there’s anything strange about this whatsoever?

ANGLE ON: KATARA pats AÁNG’S forehead with a rag.

KATARA

I didn’t say that. It is a bit strange.

SOKKA

“A bit strange”? We find a kid frozen under the hulk of a Fire Nation warship, claiming to be the last airbender and that’s all you have to say?

KATARA

We don’t know anything about him yet.

She turns back to AÁNG, who’s starting to wake up.

SOKKA

We know-

KATARA shushes him.

ANGLE ON: AÁNG begins to groggily lean forward.

AÁNG’S POV: SOKKA and KATARA fade slowly into AÁNG’S vision. KATARA smiles at him.

ANGLE ON: AÁNG begins to squirm in panic, but KATARA grips his shoulder and calms him.

KATARA

Aáng! Aáng, calm down! We’re in our village.

AÁNG begins to settle back down, gripping his head.

AÁNG

(groggily)

What happened?

ANGLE ON: KATARA looks for something to say.

SOKKA

(blurting out)

I knocked you out.

ANGLE ON: AÁNG looks to SOKKA, bebewilderedly.

ANGLE ON: SOKKA looks awkwardly around the tent.

SOKKA

I uh… I wanted to avoid the inevitable…

ANGLE ON: AÁNG looks at SOKKA, still quite amazed. KATARA shares his same expression.

ANGLE ON: SOKKA backs out of the tent.

SOKKA

I’ll… just… go… outside.

He rushes out.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

ANGLE ON: KATARA turns back to tending AÁNG.

AÁNG

What’s with him?

KATARA

I’ve never been able to find out.

He chuckles.

AÁNG

Thanks for saving me. I could have frozen out there.

KATARA

No problem. You have a bit of a fever. Not much, though.

AÁNG clutches his sides from cold.

AÁNG

Yeah, coats aren’t exactly a commonality where I’m from.

KATARA

We have some extra parkas in here somewhere.

AÁNG begins to scan around the room with his eyes.

KATARA

Where are you from, anyway?

AÁNG

Southern Air Temple.

She stops patting his forehead and locks eyes with him.

KATARA

So you are an airbender.

AÁNG points to the arrow tattoo on his forehead.

AÁNG

This is a bit of a giveaway, isn’t it?

KATARA chuckles (almost in a false, trying-too-hard way), and reaches over his forehead for something, when AÁNG looks between her arms.

CLOSE ON: AÁNG focuses on the necklace KATARA’S wearing, a blue gem with a few water swirls carved into it.

ANGLE ON: AÁNG looks back up to face KATARA.

AÁNG

That’s a nice necklace.

KATARA looks down to AÁNG, clutching it and smiling at him.

KATARA

Thanks. It’s my mom’s.

He smiles back.

KATARA

So, how did you end up down here?

ANGLE ON: AÁNG’s expression turns dark, as he looks around, thinking for what to say.

AÁNG

I, uh… I ran away.

ANGLE ON: KATARA looks a bit surprised by his remark.

KATARA

Oh…

AÁNG

It was all really, stupid, to be honest.

They hear SOKKA calling off-screen.

SOKKA (O.S.)

(panicked)

Katara!!

ANGLE ON: KATARA turns her head to the noise. She faces back to AÁNG.

KATARA

You gonna be alright?

AÁNG

Of course. Go ahead.

ANGLE ON: KATARA nearly exits, but looks back.

ANGLE ON: AÁNG looks at her, a bit confused.

AÁNG

Something wrong?

ANGLE ON: KATARA catches herself.

KATARA

Uh, your… staff thing… is over there.

ANGLE ON: AÁNG looks over to the corner, seeing his staff resting in a corner. He looks back, grinning.

AÁNG

Thank you.

ANGLE ON: KATARA gives a brief grin and walks out.
