This is a very interesting idea for an edit and am curious how it’ll turn out!

Thanks! It’s 95% completed already, it’s just those couple of shots.

This edit has me really intrigued. One of the aspects I don’t really like about TLJ is its tricky relationship with the “show, don’t tell”. At some points it gives you sequences with interesting and bold storytelling decisions (like the Rashomon flashbacks) and then there’s others where there’s dialogue and editing choices that spoonfeed everything, like Rey’s experience at the vision, where we hear her voiceover explanation at the very same time we are watching it, and it makes it feel cheaper as a result.

TLJ has good themes, and I think they can really benefit from a more concise, focused approach. Looking forward to this and I hope to apply in an eventual edit of mine some of the more original changes you’re making (like having DJ be the Master Codebreaker).

I realize this may not be the right thread to discuss this, but why exactly didn’t the main editors here remove that voice over from the vision? I can’t imagine it would be that hard to do, and it would improve the scene a lot. The only line Rey needs to say is “I’ve never felt so alone.”

When can we expect an ETA for the edit? 😃

I’m cutting all of the Cave Vision voiceover from mine; it’s not as easy as click-and-delete because the dialogue track echoes across the other channels, but I’ve done some rejiggering and I think it works. If you do still hear anything, it’s not comprehensible, and at worst sounds like generic spooky Force whispers.

It completely depends on whether I’m able to get help on those last few shots. The rest of the edit is good to go from my end, other than watching it back again and doing any final smoothing.

A friend of mine who uses Blender has volunteered to try and get the DJ plomme bloom shot working; I’ll keep everyone updated if/when that progresses.

That would be very, very interesting twist on that subplot.

Haha, i still think one of the greatest editing feats would be finding a way to remove the Maz Battle Front Skype Call.

We can only dream.

We never see holograms working like that before or after in any other Star Wars media, which is distracting. Which is frustrating because I don’t have an issue with the content of the call; it doesn’t waffle on and the humour is organic. I was able to cut Maz flying off on a rocket jetpack at the end, at least.

It’s been a while since I last watched TLJ, so I don’t remember the exact scene well enough to know how well this would work, but just to spitball…would it be possible to cut out Maz’s hologram and show just enough of Finn, Rose, & Poe discussing the plan without her to convey the basics, then play Maz telling them how to identify the codebreaker as comm audio while their shuttle to Canto Bight is in hyperspace? Again, just a very rough idea, but might be worth experimenting with.

There wouldn’t be enough coverage in the scene to do that - plus there are other things that happen before the shuttle leaves that would have to be cut as a result. Ultimately I’m not too worried about it; it’s annoying that it’s basically a Battlefront cutscene, but it’s a pretty minor thing.

The next big thing to do is get my hands on a copy of the Cobalt Squadron audiobook. Does anyone here listen to audiobooks? I have a copy of the text novel, but I don’t know how to get an audiobook without signing up for ongoing services that might not even have it.

I know that the Cobalt Squadron audiobook is on Amazon’s service called Audible! I looked and you can pick up to 3 audiobooks as part of your free trial. That might be an avenue you can use to get the audio for what you need!

I’ve updated the top post to reflect what’s currently being worked on and what I currently need help with.

Should I export a workprint of the edit in its current state, with some placeholders for the things that still have to be done? I don’t know if there’d be any demand for that, but at least that way I figure people could see the majority of the completed project and decide if it’s something they want to lend a hand to or not.

I’m working on the new line from Cobalt Squadron. It’s tricky because KMT reads the whole book with such a deadpan tone, which doesn’t gel with the line I’m trying to make. I’ll keep at it and see what I can do.

Thanks! I’ll have a look and see what I can do! I didn’t consider Audible because I didn’t realise there was a free trial option like that.

No problem! I didn’t venture too far down the free trial route (it might be conditional on whether or not you already have Amazon Prime). Hope it works out for you!

I say sure!

And let me know what Throne Room shot you need in 4K and I’ll send it your way.

I actually agree. I made a few different decisions during the editing process, based on watching the scenes as I was editing them. That’s one of the lines I decided was better left in. There weren’t many but I need to go through and update it.

Thank you! It’s the shot of Snoke saying “Look here now,” before he Force-pushes Rey over to the magnifying window.

Update:

  • GMatias sent me a 4k version of the shot of Snoke I needed; I’ve integrated it into the edit and the shot transition looks great now.
  • I’m working on Rose’s line using clips from Cobalt Squadron. It’s slow going because there’s so many different options for words and phonemes - it’s nearly a five hour audio file of KMT talking! - and there’s a few different ways the sentence can be worded depending on the available inflections of different words. I’ve got something I’m about 75% happy with right now, and I’ll post a WIP audio file when I’ve got it to, say, 80% happy with it.
  • SparkySywer has kindly offered to render the opening crawl for me, but I’m going to make sure I’m completely happy with every word first. Here’s what I have currently, which I’m happy with right now as a final draft:

The FIRST ORDER reigns. The New Republic has been decimated, and in this state of galactic confusion, Supreme Leader Snoke’s armies have seized key territories and taken military control of the galaxy.

Only General Leia Organa’s band of RESISTANCE fighters stand against the rising tyranny, certain that Jedi Master Luke Skywalker will return and restore a spark of hope to the fight.

But the Resistance has been tracked down and exposed. As the First Order speeds toward the rebel base, the brave heroes mount a desperate escape…
