The Last Jedi: Rekindled (V3 UPDATE!) — Page 32

I think you should keep V2 up, as a “purist” cut of Rekindled. If someone wants to remove the radio scene from V3, they can do it themselves.

My preferred saga experience:
TPM/AOTC/ROTS (Hal 9000), ANH/ESB/ROTJ (Despecialized), The Mandalorian,
TFA (Starlight), TLJ (Fallen Knight), TROS (Resurgence).
May the midichlorians be with you.

I’m leaning against this change, but if this is something most would like to see I’m happy to implement it. It’s a small change; I just generally try not to make changes that, for me, aren’t issues I have with the film.

Are you still considering adding some subtle audio malfunction sounds to Kylo/Rey’s previous Force skypes to set up the final radio contact?

Yes, I think I will still do this when I mix the other spoons FX. I’m thinking just tease these sounds for a moment at the beginning of each call (not throughout the entirety of the call). Just something so it’s there, but not call too much attention to it or distract from the scene.

Yes, this is the direction I am leaning too!

IA suggests a V3 but without the radio scene at the end. I’m hesitant to do this, because without the radio scene, these tweaks really don’t address my main goal for V3, which was to adequately tease Palpatine so that TROS doesn’t come so out of left field (no matter what version of TROS you watch).

I must not have been catching up with this stuff very well, because I didn’t know you were working on other Palpatine teases as well!

I agree with StarkillerAG. Have the two versions only, no need to overcomplicate it.

I would also like to see the Luke Matrix removed as a Non-Palpstine edit.

Excellent work on the changes and looking forward to the release of V3.

Nev, here’s a compilation of added sounds to the force Skype call to tease the Palpatine Contact:

Force Skype Sounds
pw: fanedit

To make it easier, the description has all of the timecodes of the added sounds. I ended up adding more than I thought I would! I could maybe dial it back, but I think they generally work and are subtle.

So I think we’ll have V2 and V3 as the options! Not sure how long this will take, but I guess I would aim to for the next month or so (work is getting busy, and the surround mixing is a bit tricky).

Any other thoughts on the Matrix-style slomo? It sounds like people might be leaning toward its removal.

I like it.

I’m not sure I understand what the purpose is. I think it makes the Force feel a little technological when it should be rather natural.

If anything, the Palpatine radio call could have a mix of radio interference, and a mix of the Force connection sound when Kylo connects to Leia, rather than the Force skype sound. I think the sounds are slightly different. Since Ben and Rey’s bond is unique, I think the Emperor connecting to Kylo could sound more like the more general connection sound. I think combining those two sounds there would be enough to make it ambiguous. I think adding that sound to the Force skype sessions just feels a little unnatural. My two cents though!

I personally don’t have a problem with the slow-mo shot, but I can see why people might not like it.

RL, yeah I see your point. Maybe I’ll just do it once or twice instead of making it something that’s always there.

There is a force bond sound already in the Palpatine contact scene (when Kylo looks up). I think that’s enough (I do think it’s the same sound as the other force connection moments but I’ll double check).

For removing the Matrix slomo, I think I count two for removing, and two against.

I’m personally fine with that shot. I can still remember seeing the movie for the first time and gasping when he does that. I get that maybe it doesn’t seem very Star Wars-like, but this movie is full of moments like that. Besides, at least this one is cool.

Yeah, this is the kind of thing I worry about. If I watch this a year down the road will I miss that little moment? This is always the risk when making changes, of course, but that’s why I try to avoid changes to the theatrical version that I’m ambivalent about.

In any case, this is an interesting little poll. It’s now 3-3!

Edit: Actually, it’s 3-2 for keeping the slomo shot. I counted DZ-330 twice!

That’s 4-3 for keeping the shot! (a page back, stevepaynter expressed his preference for removing the shot, so I added it to the vote total).

I like the slow-mo, I think it shows that Luke’s reflexes are quicker than Kylo’s.

Maybe if there were a way to speed that footage up a bit and add motion blur (using motion interpolation and frame averaging), to make it feel less like a Matrix ripoff (I could try experimenting with it).

Please don’t do this. Keep the slomo shot. I like it. I agree with RogueLeader, I don’t think that added sound effect is necessary.

Ok, looks like there’s good support for keeping the slomo shot. IA, you’re welcome to play with the shot, but as I said, I never really had a problem with it, so I’m fine with it as-is.

For the Force Skype sound effects, I think I will remove most of them, and keep 2-3 that I felt worked the best. I like having some hint of them early but nothing on the nose or distracting. Thanks for your help, everybody!

I updated the radio wave sounds added to the Force Skypes, and toned them way down. I tried to place them more carefully, and in ways that can be interpreted as Palpatine creating a force connection, most noticeably when Kylo-Ren is in the hangar (per NeverarGreat’s suggestions).

Here’s the full updated list of changes. My plan is to get the sound mixing going soon and have the updates ready in the next month or so.

V3 PALPATINE TEASES
PW for all: fanedit

  1. Dark Side Cave 1st Appearance Sith Whispers (V1)
Description: added Sith whispers as the cave first calls to Rey (note: I did try to add a reverb of Palpatine actually saying “Rey” from “I’m afraid the deflector shield…” as was suggested but it just didn’t work.)

  2. Dark Side Cave Sith Whispers and Hood (V4)
Description: Added Sith whispers and Palpatine’s hood appears in the reflection just before Rey’s face appears.

  3. Flashback Palpatine Laugh (by HAL 9000 and TiMartyn)
Description: Added Palpatine laugh to the last Luke/Kylo flashback. Thanks to Hal 9000 for providing the audio.

  4. Palpatine Contact - Option E
Description: When Kylo is in the radio room of the rebel base on Crait, he has an unexpected contact from Palpatine, a voice saying “Find me”. Option E has one reused shot, that is cropped and retimed.

  5. Snoke Sith Death - Subtle
Description: Snoke’s eyes flash red/yellow as he’s stabbed by the lightsaber, and then a puff of blue “Palpatine essence“ releases after his body splits in half.

  6. Force Skype Sounds (V2)
Description: Added some of the Palpatine Contact sounds to other Force Skype moments. V2 is signicantly toned down and used in more precisely-chosen moments.

V3 NON-PALPATINE CHANGES

  1. Finn Wakes
Description: Rey whispers “Finn” right before he wakes up, hinting at his force sensitivity.

I’d definitely vote for a V3 which includes all of the above changes.

Sorry I am late for the party!

I applaud having two different versions. (I am going for the V3 all the way!)

I will comment on the Matrix Shot - Personally … it needs to go. It took me out of Star Wars in a smaller way in comparison to the Leia Poppins moment. It will not make or break the edit for me whichever direction you go, but Hal’s removal is clean. The Matrix Scene is classic in Matrix … but it’s not necessary here.

Also, I do not recall if this topic came up here or somewhere else, but I am curious if it would be wise to look at the Kylo and Rey scene discussing her parents? Would removing/edit the lines about “sold you for drinking money, etc” be something to think about/discuss?

Star Wars has the concept about “Certain Point of View” on things, but this was more like “I saw what happened” as opposed to “My view on this is …” This is especially drawn out since he then explains in detail everything that happened to them. So … yeah.

I think just removing the line about “selling them for drinking money” and whatever else was a blatant lie would be wise. Especially since he tells her “I didn’t lie to you” in the sense that they were nobody’s … they chose to do that AND PROTECT YOU FROM GRANDPA! The other details he added are lies since the actual “Point of View” topic is them being nobodies, albeit the CHOSE to do that. Not the selling her for drinking money.

I think the “sold for drinking money” line should be kept, I’m sure down the line many edits will remove “the good parents” aspect from TROS to emphasis Rey’s triumphant rejection of her evil heritage.

Ah, valid point if that can be worked. It is “funny” how the fact her parents wanted to protect her kinda underscored the concept of “my bad lineage.” If that can be done, successfully, that could be worked.

However, at the same time though, regardless of any edits that address the topic of her parents, does having it really add to anything? If anything, it adds a current/complete falsehood regardless of “point of view” argument that could be used OR editing of the next movie. By removing that, everything else can be fine. I don’t see how that adds more benefit than negative.
