4D is perfect!

Have you given any thought to ending the movie on the Falcon group shot? I think that would be awesome as it could help alleviate all the ST films ending with the same theme and have a more upbeat and quick ending. Maybe broom boi could be recycled as an ending for IX.

The Skywalker Saga Viewing Order:
I: C.O.D. | II: T.A.S. | III: L.O.E. AE
IV: Revisited | V: Revisited | VI: Revisited
VII: Restructured | VIII: Rekindled | IX: Ascendant

This is the way.

4D is my favourite - some great work going into this. Nice one 😃

I find that answer vague and unconvincing. Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? And say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

That’s interesting. There’s a few shots that can be used in different ways. I always liked cutting from the door closing to the Kylo eyes closeup, and felt that the twitching shot (in this new context) felt like he was being disturbed/confused, unsure if he was hearing voices in the radio. He could be questioning his sanity. I also added some low level Sith whispers (good things come in threes!) to reinforce the idea that there’s more going on than the radio. I’m wondering if I should even make them a bit more prominent in the mix.

I could buy the shift from the door moment to calculating rather than hurt (it’s hard for me not to read that emotion in his eyes in that shot), but you would definitely need to provide a little extra oomph right as he twitches later. Either a word from Palpatine, or a burst of static, something to elicit a specific reaction like the boom of the door did originally. It’s a pity we don’t have clean audio of Palpatine saying “Kylo”, do we? That might do the trick.

Although I think B works well, 4D is also really nice in terms of keeping everything. It still feels rather abrupt though. Maybe it would work if you seeded the idea of Palps trying to contact Kylo earlier in the film. Maybe it could be tied to the Force Skype idea in general; since Rey is connected to Palps through blood it makes some sense that Palps would be in on these calls to some extent as well. Maybe when Kylo is having his scar stitched there could be the sound of electrical interference and maybe a small spark from the medical droid, causing Kylo to brush it away. Or when he’s standing before the walkers in the hangar there could be the sound of a distorted intercom. It could be very subtle, but just something that keys the audience into the fact that strange things happen in their real world as the Force connection is made, and that these things are becoming more pronounced as they connect more and more.

It would also play into TROS with actual object teleportation.

Great work in any case!

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

Thanks again everyone for all of the feedback!

DZ-330, I still prefer to end with the broom boy, because of the pacing and thematic resonance (despite the repeated use of the force theme). I also like that it transcends the immediate story, giving us time to think about the big picture. I agree it would work well at the end of IX, but only if it was longer and included more kids, Rey toys…etc It would be weird if they only mentioned Luke’s actions on Crait, especially since he’s barely in the IX.

I really hope the edits of TROS can better pay off Luke’s heroics, because that was one of the biggest disappointments for me.

I’ll listen to it again and make refinements there! I definitely intended the twitch to coincide with a burst of static/voice, but maybe as I was tweaking it I made it too subtle!

Nev, your point is well taken. I’d definitely consider this including some very quick, subtle static noises during other force Skype calls. As long as it doesn’t hurt the feel of those moments. Something to think about!

Hm, you do definitely have something there already- I guess to me it needs to mean more to elicit that big a twitch. Adam Driver is reacting to the shock of his only lifeline to the Light Side/Redemption closing (at least for now). Obviously without giving away the full Palpatine reveal we can’t replace it with anything too dramatic, but perhaps there’s a way to draw out that twitch reaction in a way that feels natural. Again, maybe voice would be more effective, even if we might not fully understand it.

And I can hear those Sith whispers near the end now that you mention it, definitely make those a little bit louder.

I made a slight update to Option D, swapping the last two reaction shots of Kylo so that his twitch hits when the voice finally comes through clearly. I think this feels better now, but let me know, as I honestly could go either way. I also made some other small adjustments, but nothing major!

For the slight update to Option 4D v2 there really seems to be a lot of of cuts back to the radio. It’s almost as if the radio is becoming a new character. I do like the ambiguity as to whether or not it’s a radio broadcast we’re hearing.

heil palpatine.

To be clear, that’s not a change from the previous Option D. The way I look at it, the cuts to the radio are to give this moment time to breath as Kylo questions whether he’s hearing something in the radio, through the force, or just in his head.

Ehhh, what the heck! Here’s a D3! This changes the last shot of scene before the wipe to a closeup of Kylo’s eyes instead of the radio. This technically is a reused shot, but it’s time remapped and cropped a bit. Just like the D2 change, I could go either way on this.

4D V2 absolutely hits the right feel with the twitch, nice work! I’m fine with the change in 4D V3 as well- it’s good that we end on Kylo’s eyes. An emphasis on what the voice means to him, rather than the radio and transmission itself.

VD V3 - This is the way.

Though the repeated shot at the end definitely gets to me still. One repeat isn’t a big deal but two seems too obvious in my opinion. But perhaps its the only way to pull this off. I wonder if someone who hasn’t seen TLJ would even notice… Maybe my seasoned eyes are doing me a disservice.

For me 4D V2 hits the right balance. I think the repeated shot at the end of V3 is a little noticable.

V2 for me since it’s one less repeat. At least that’s my personal view.

So between Ren looking up and then final shot before transition, it cuts back and forth between a CU of Ren and the radio twice, right? It feels like it drags the moment out for too long. I know you want it to line up with the music appropriately though, but I feel like you shouldn’t let the music restrict your cuts.

I feel like you could keep the Ren flinching at Rey shutting the door on him, but still use the shot that slowly dollies in on Ren’s face for the radio reaction. So you have the wide of Ren, the radio flickering to life, Ren looking up, back to radio, dolly CU on Ren, and maybe one more shot of the radio. Ending on the eyes is cool too. I just feel like it cuts back and forth too much, and I think it even would work really well to slow down that dolly CU a bit and end on that shot of him.

To me, that flinching shot emphasizes that Rey has rejected him, and now he feels completely alone, but then a mysterious voice calls to him, and in that dolly shot I feel like I can see a glimmer of newfound ambition in Ren’s eyes. So leaving Ren at the moment would really foreshadow his drive that we see in the next film.

EDIT: Or maybe do, radio flicker, Ren looks up, radio, eye CU, radio, dolly on Ren then transition.

I also feel like the Sith chants might be a little too much. I like how there is some room for speculation with just the vague “Find me”.

Sorry, I don’t mean to confuse you. You’ve worked so hard on this and have made so many versions. It seems like you’re either there or really close though since everyone really loves your D. 😉

That works surprisingly well, and has some great work. I’m still not sure the idea is a slam dunk but you’ve pulled it off beautifully.

Worlds serve stories, and once the story is told the world goes away. To set something else in the same world is merely to craft a similar world for a new story.

Thanks Hal! And thanks everyone for the helpful feedback!

RL, I get what you’re saying and I can see a version like that working (Option 4E)! I think if I do try that, I would slow down and split up the long dolly, as you said, and end on that shot. I think I should stay away from the closeup eyes shot to avoid a second duplicated shot.

I don’t think it was really the music that was dictating the edits so much as needing to give a new idea it’s own moment, which requires time. So I don’t want to make it much shorter, but rather reduce the number of cuts.

I’ll take a look when I can, but for now, 4D V2 is the “current” version in the cut!

Hello! I really like what you have done with this edit. I am astounded how much just changing the music with Luke throwing the lightsaber really changes the feel for the whole scene and the changes to the scene where fin sacrifices himself flows so much better. I would appreciate a copy of the 1080p HD edition, please!
