I also think the radio is a bit odd. Maybe if we got an indication that this radio broadcast was something only Kylo could hear, it would tie into the ‘voices in your head’ line from TROS. But really, in order to not reuse shots and make the scene feel like it’s cohesive, I think it will have to be just about Kylo/Rey or just about Kylo/Palps. The Kylo/Rey scene, as much as it is good on its own, has a finality about it as if Rey is shutting the door on any relationship they could have had, which feels weird based on TROS. So maybe cutting the Kylo/Rey bit would do more good than harm.

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

That was sort of my train of thought as well.

Maybe instead of using any radio shots, you could just have Kylo looking up, the eye close up, etc., and a shorter line from Palpatine. Just a brief, “Find me…” that could sounds like a whisper in the wind.

Again, this isn’t against the work you’ve already done. I think it looks great. This is just constructive criticism on the idea in general!

All good points, but the fact Kylo and Rey is showing a force connection after Snoke is dead (as we are lead to believe Snoke was manipulating this bond) is important to the audience going into TROS. The force connection between Kylo and Rey is still occurring in TROS and really the only major thing JJ did not retcon from TLJ in TROS.

I just think it could be confusing in TROS as to why they still have this Force connection if the scene of Kylo and Rey still showing they have force connection at the end of TLJ is removed.

Not too much trouble, I definitely will try a version without Rey/Kylo, and a version without the radio (just a whisper of “Find Me” and maybe a laugh). Not sure where I’ll land in the end, but everything’s an option.

I’m glad people are liking the current version, though I hear the criticisms too!

I think trying a version without the radio would be cool to see how it looks, but I wouldn’t want to lose the rest of the dialogue or the laugh. I just thought of an idea for Rey’s vision scene. When the bluray of TROS is out, when Rey’s face is revealed in the ice, have it show Dark Rey’s face instead. This would be a cool tease without giving too much away, because I think it needs something more than just the addition to the shadow and the sith whispers. How the vision plays out says “You’re just Rey.”, but this would tease that there’s something more to the story. You can still keep all of Dark Rey in TROS, but adding this would improve the scene greatly.

Fair point. Well, if a briefer Palpatine tease was made, then maybe you could keep the Rey/Kylo moment and have that tease without reusing little to no footage. Hmm.

EDIT: Palpatease?

The hood is very subtle right now, it was kind of a quick and dirty effort. I do wonder how explicit we want to make this though. The scene is about Rey’s internal struggle— her empty search for meaning- and if we call too much attention to the hood, I worry it will give it away and we’ll be thinking about Palpatine instead of Rey’s increasing isolation.

I agree that it should not be the center of attention, at the same time It wouldn’t register to the audience that its palpatine until the radio reveal at the end so I don’t see a problem in making it a little more distinct.

I could picture something added in the shot where the saber flies toward Rey and she grabs it, and Snoke’s torso falling over. Maybe when his upper body tumbles over, a whiff of that blue smoke/flame could waft up and then disappear. I think the throne is out of focus during that moment, so it would still be subtle. I guess the idea is that a part of Palpatine’s essence was inside Snoke, controlling him.

This.

I’ve been thinking about the cave scene and the reveal of Rey’s parent. I personally believe it will be better to leave the scene as is and not incorporate the hood silohoutte and this why.

  • Rey went into the cave to reveal her parents so why would the cave show her grandparent (Palpatine)? She even says “show me my parents” in the cave

  • The vibe I’m getting is there will be two edit types of TROS. One version will the keep Palpatine as Rey’s grandfather and the other version will keep Rey as a nobody. By having Palpatine’s reveal as Rey’s grandfather in Poppa’s TLJ edit then you only get one choice of the version of TROS to watch. So if you prefer Poppa’s TLJ edit but would prefer Rey to be a nobody in TROS then it does not flow (however, this could just be my OCD kicking in!).

  • My interpration of the scene is the cave purposely did not show Rey her parents because it was trying give her more reason to go to the dark side as she desperately wants to find her parents. She even force reaches out to Kylo Ren because of this. I think the scene work as is.

With all the Palpatine return clues being incorporated into V3 such as Palpatines laugh in the Luke/Kylo flashback, Snoke’s eyes turning yellow after he is cut in half and the radio broadcast I personally don’t think the hood silhouette is needed in the cave scene.

Palpatine is still integral to Rey’s past whether she is his grandkid or not, the point of the hooded figure is to at least imply a connection.

stevepaynter, good point. I may still try to improve the silhouette and see how it feels, but I do think the sith whispers by themselves are enough foreshadowing in that scene.

That way, we’ll have a couple sith whispers (including one when Rey is fist attracted to the cave), a Palpatine laugh, some Snoke smoke and eyes, and whatever the end radio room scene becomes!

This exactly. In fact, if you go the Rey Nobody route but still have Palpatine have her parents killed, the fact that this cloaked figure appears would act as a hint to the hand he played in their fate.

Ok, here’s a pass of a less subtle hood appearance as the two shadows merge.

I used a shot from ROTJ to get the motion, but I wonder if this is a little too explicit. To me, it’s obviously Palpatine, and I wonder if I should dial it back.

It looks good. Not obviously Palpatine. Could be anyone in a robe. Just needs a little tweaking to smooth the transition at the end a bit.

heil palpatine.

Looking really good … really good. I think too just a bit more tweaking. If I was to describe the “robe” figure being shown in “throbs,” I think the third “throb” needs to be toned down a bit since that one seems the strongest. If that was much softer, it’ll help transition to the “robe figure” to the single much better.

Sorry if it is not clear, I am terrible and explaining things …

@Poppasketi

I just want to chime in on some of your ideas you’ve been playing with/demonstrating since ROS released.

I LOVE them!

With regard to the Palpatine radio signal. YES!! This is absolutely amazing, and I wasn’t all distracted by the ‘repeated’ Kylo reaction shots. I don’t think they were overly obvious or overused.

Adam Drivers reactions in this scene are so still and internalised with his emotins conveyed through his eyes that there’s no motion that makes it too obvious that there’s a repeated shot.

I understand what some are saying about whether the radio broadcast is the right play or not, but I think it totally works, considering that by the opening crawl of ROS it’s revealed that Palpatine has used a broadcast to reveal his return.

However, to play devils advocate, maybe it’s possible to play for ‘the middle ground’

Have maybe the radio display twitch at either the beginning of the message…or the end (or both?) but otherwise remain static.

Maybe the readout just twitches for the ‘static’, but not the message?

The implication being that it sounds like Palpatine is coming through the radio but neither Kylo or the audience can be completely sure…which plays into whether it’s all in Kylo’s head?

To address your sith whispers and the new hooded silhouette, these totally work for me.

Whether this is retrospectively obvious or not, I don’t think any us could claim we would 100 percent notice this if we were watching TLJ for the first time, and we (as in the fanbase) would only start to scrutinise and analyse on later viewings…before we started frothing at the mouth as we all questioned what it meant. So I really think you should own it and go all in on the idea.

I LOVE your edit of TLJ as it is already. It’s always been a close call between you and HAL but it’s totally your work on the removal of Phasma and the battle of Crait with the new the ‘shoot down’ elements that edge it for me.

I’m keeping a keen eye on all of your future versions of your edit, because at least in it’s current form it’s my go to version of the film, and everything you’ve demonstrated post ROS has got me even more excited.

(Just as a sub-point whilst I’m talking to you, though:- Did you see ‘TiMartyn’s’ TLJ edit?

What he did with Poe’s intro and the complete removal of the dialogue between him and Hux was astounding from a pacing perspective…it really carried the pace and tone from TFA straight into TLJ before the movie naturally slows down after the bombing raid goes wrong…

TiMartyn’s choices here REALLY worked for me…as I felt it really heightened Poe’s kamikaze/devil my care nature as a pilot and just got the movie off to an immediately exciting start.

I thought it might be worth you taking a look and maybe considering whether that approach or something similar might fit your vision or not?)

Anyhow, please keep up your amazing work,

…I’ll be watching your career with great interest 😉

I rewatched the radio part and my gut is still telling me that “less is more” when it comes to Palp’s lines.

Maybe it starts with the static obviously with a very subtle and distorted “Find me”

more static for a bit and it starts to “smooth out?” and has one last “Find me” that is clearer.

Static and then it goes dead.

smpearce1981 and jarbear, I like both of your ideas for the radio scene. Definitely good to consider for the next pass. I am thinking of trying it as more of a whisper, but perhaps using the radio as something for Kylo Ren to interact with. In other words, leave it ambiguous as to whether it’s the radio, as smpearce1981 suggested.

Definitely agree on smoothing out the last part of the robe. I think it lingers too long and shortening it will sell it better.

smpearce1981, I did watch parts of TiMartyn’s edit and what I saw was very good. I think it’s the best version of completely cutting the Hux call I’ve seen. I still like having the phone call opening, as it shows Poe using his wits and cunning to get the better of Hux.

Ok, here’s a post comprising the latest of everything being considered for V3, in order, save for Rey whispering “Finn” as he wakes up and Snoke’s smoke and eyes. (Does anybody know of a moment where Rey says Finn’s name softly or whispers?) Everything has been updated or is new in some fashion, based on feedback!

PW for all: fanedit

  1. Dark Side Cave 1st Appearance Sith Whispers (V1)

  2. Dark Side Cave Sith Whispers and Hood (V3)

  3. Flashback Palpatine Laugh (by HAL 9000 and TiMartyn)

4A. Palpatine Contact - Option A - Rey/Kylo moment followed by radio contact (V6)
4B. Palpatine Contact - Option B - no Rey/Kylo moment (V1)
4C. Palpatine Contact - Option C - no radio, implied force connection (V1)

  1. Love it, not too strong with the right amount of subtlety.

  2. Better that your previous attempt since robe is not too strong. I dig it.

  3. Yep, that works just right.

4B Seems to me to be the right balance. Granted you lose the exchange between Kylo and Rey, but for incorporating this concept it fits really nicely.

One argument against the radio is understandable that “Palp is a force user, he wouldn’t need a radio!” which is a very valid point. However, by using the radio to communicate it works better in the next movie with Kylo’s and Palp’s interaction. (I am specially leaving out the radio broadcast in the crawl, no matter what it needs to be removed in any fan-edits honestly.)

Why is that? Palp’s reveals he has been all the voices in Kylo’s head the whole time. So by him NOT using the force to communicate with him as shown in option 4C, that reveal has a more impactful reveal in the next movie. Is that a minor thing, since reaching out to him is not exactly the same thing as that reveal, but it still delivers that impact better. Plus the work you did is awesome too by the way.

As for 4B … I am still pondering about the laugh since due to the context of “Find Me” as well as the laugh doesn’t really match up with the line, it feels very “voice-Overed” And this is coming to the guy who likes his laugh. BUT, by using the flashback laugh, you get a subtle laugh that’s in there but not very revealing.

Author
Time

I love the visuals from 4A…ie the Rey/Kylo moment but with the more subtle radio message from 4b…ie no laughter (in my opinion it’s just too on the nose)

I personally feel that Kylo should really be questioning what he heard Or if he even heard it and so he might even be questioning his own sanity considering that he has just lost everything:- His father, any ties to his mother, Snoke and his budding human connection with Rey

He’s lost it all apart from the First order…but in his first command as Supreme Leader he has just been made to look quite incompetent and he knows it, hence I quite like the subtext that he might question what he’s hearing as his self doubt in that moment might make him wonder if he can hold it together under the pressure

Hence why I think a ‘less is more’ approach to the signal would be more psychological than it being spelled out as a very definitive radio or force connection.

“What was that? Who was that? Was that the radio? Did I even hear it?

It came and went so quick I can’t be sure and I never heard it again…but I’m sure I heard a voice…’his’ voice and now it’s like a splinter in my mind”

For the cave scene what do you think of starting the silhouettes with the hooded figure than the parents and finally to Rey? I think it makes more sense lineage wise.

As for Palpatine’s contact, I think you can do without the laugh at the end personally.
In option C I like how you cut straight to Rey after Palpatine’s contact with echoes of his voice still there, it makes for good foreshadowing. You can still play with the dialogue a little though, something like “You are fulfilling your destiny…find me.” or “your journey nears it’s end…come to me” would make the scene linger a little and give it a sense of inevitability.

Really great stuff, I’m impressed with how fast you’re pumping these out!
