Kagemusha (produced with the help of… Lucas 😉… yeah you all already know that), Stalker (never seen this one), Daimajin (don’t remember which one, all 3 are awesome and easy to find in bluray), Ran, Goyokin. Mostly japanese influences. We could easily add Akira for the stunning “dead silence” sequence and Lone Wolf and Cub (the second one) for the impressive throne room battle (or maybe another influence, yet it was screaming “Kenji Misumi” for me 😃).

(Kenji Misumi’s Ken and its Kendo philosophy might have influenced the training sequences, but I haven’t seen it in a decade so I’m lacking fresh memories about it)

(and Hayao Miyazaki - Princess Mononoke comes in mind - for the Crait ambiance with the crystal wolves and the FO walkers)

I don’t recall Luke choking anyone in ROTJ

I thought he was using a Jedi mind trick there.

I agree with Warb. We know what it looks like if someone is choking and that wasn’t what happened in that scene. I have always read the scene as Luke convincing the GGs to go back to their posts and sleep, their hands on their chests in a restrained or passive position.

So was this, if you remember. 😉

True, but at least the Ewoks were put to better use. All that thing did in TLJ was hang around and look cute.

In my opinion, that makes the Ewoks even worse. the Porgs have only a minute of screentime, while the Ewoks play a much bigger role. If you don’t like the Porgs, you can easily ignore them or remove them in a fan-edit. That doesn’t work with the Ewoks.

Really? Even with the guards grabbing their throats and making choking noises? He was obviously force choking.

They seem to be pushed back, not just walking back, so it’s definitely more than just a mind trick.

So who’s the main villain now that Snoke’s dead? I made a thread about it, but it’s all glitched out. I’m guessing it was deleted for spoilers? I didn’t mention Snoke’s death in the title, but whatever. Point is Snoke’s dead, and Kylo’s neither intimidating nor completely evil. Who’s the main villain now? Someone on reddit suggested Snoke was just a puppet projection of sorts, and that the real person behind the First Order is hidden elsewhere. I guess that could work maybe?

But how? Don’t get me wrong, he’s a compelling character, but he’s not a credible villain.

He’s an unpredictable loose cannon, which after six movies of Palpatine and two movies of diet Palpatine is a novelty. Anyway, I don’t think a villain needs to be an unambiguous personification of evil to qualify as a villain. An emotional wildcard with warped intentions and poor impulse control can do just as much damage as a malevolent puppet master.

Force push then.

Pig sounds and hands on chests. Also clear they are not pushed.

They grabbed their throats? I don’t recall hearing any choking noises.

It looks nothing like the Stormtrooper who gets force-tricked by Obi-Wan, he was acting completely normal. The guards do not act normal.

Of course they don’t act normal. Nothing to do with the particular influence exercised on the Stormtrooper. When a guard puts their arm on their chest it is a sign of respect in many a film. The guards had their hands on their chests and walked backward and fell asleep. Choking looks very different.

Edit: also, go take a look at the ROTJ script.

Especially considering that’s not what the mind trick looks like and the fact the whole movie is building up to will-he-won’t-he with the final denial of the dark side at the end. No idea why someone would think otherwise. But then I’ve no idea how some people process any kind of movie information these days.

This meme or whatever you call it is dumb. Obi-Wan didn’t tell Luke: “hey you’re Dad was an asshole and the Jedi deserve to die.” Yoda never told Luke: “there is no dark side or light side. the jedi were arrogant and wrong”.

The people who defend these ST movies are no different than the people who defend the prequels. Mental gymnastics and totally ignoring the spirit of the original movies. But hey look it’s Darth Mual with his cool double bladed lightsaber. Er…I mean look it’s Porgs and Kylo Ren with a saber handle! It’s Star Wars duh!

“That’s not what the truck looks like” is what’s wrong with how some view Star Wars. The Force can be used to influence minds. That’s the “trick.”

What we need now is Rian Johnson to direct a follow-up Harry Potter movie where Harry tortures muggles and gives them a healthy dose of reality: you’ll never amount to anything in life.

Wouldn’t that be great because it defies expectations?

And - I suspect - one will be on my desk at work before long. 😃 I have no idea why those don’t bother me. Particularly since the Ewoks made me want to get up and walk out of the theater in 1983.

Maybe because porgs are in the movie for like 30 seconds and don’t kill any stormtroopers?
