Yeah but no one said that.
Aww…you guys. Can we just go with

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…
Thanks, now I have McLean’s American Pie in my head.

It still baffles me how people fault the movie for unpredictability and originality when that is the only way to interestingly move forward.
The fans got predictability and stability in The Force Awakens simply to gradually grow the franchise back into its roots, and Then The Last Jedi to grow it forward. Then yet some people can’t grasp the concept of storytelling, character evolution and originality - so they fault the director for it, rather than their own nostalgic expectations.
I don’t like TFA - but I respect it, I understand it, and I understand the decisions made by director and company both to make it the safe and predictable way they did. This is probably why I also loved The Last Jedi - because I don’t like to live in the past and clinge to it, I like to move forward and evolve. And that is what THE LAST JEDI did and was all about.
Thank you.

I’ve not read a single review that says “TLJ is unpredictable and original and that’s why it’s bad.” or anything that equates to that.
I’ve read many reviews that complain about peoples complaints though. Weird.

I’m not responding to any review? Where did I say that? I’m adressing the common argument and opinion shared by the people in here that did not like the movie.

Ok, I’ve not read any posts that that say “TLJ is unpredictable and original and that’s why it’s bad.” or anything that equates to that.

Spurious criticisms of those criticizing the film generate a lot of the smoke round these parts.

Yup. We’re just dumb. Glad you liked it, though. 😉
But, let me turn that around:
“Then yet some people can’t grasp the concept of storytelling, character evolution and originality - so they fault the critics, rather than their own willingness to accept whatever is given them.”*
*Not saying that’s how I feel about people who like this film (because that would be rude).

This rehash argument is just the Ring theory with a twist. Instead of using these constructed superficial “similarities” to show how great the prequels are, they are now a sign of how bad the new movies are. Why can’t angry fans come up with something new? Do they want to alienate other fans? Why do angry fans have to come up with anything? Why don’t they just watch the movies they like and ignore what they don’t like? This is a 40 year old franchise spanning several generations. It consists of nine films, several TV shows, animated movies, hundreds of novels, children’s books, video games, comic books, newspaper series, theme parks, annual conventions, etc, etc.
There is absolutely no way the franchise can be one size fits all. I can’t make sense of fans battling a franchise they like and I really can’t fathom battling a different portion of the fan base. There isn’t a brolly girl waiting with a big cardboard check. No one is going to win Star Wars.
By all means feel free to vent, deconstruct, debate, rage, etc. I do it occasionally myself. It’s what makes this forum work. However, maybe give some serious thought to focusing on what you like. The stuff we don’t like about the franchise isn’t going away.
This assumes ranting about stuff you dislike is unpleasant. Why do you have to focus on the stuff you like? Is it because it is in some way bad for you, or because the opposite side doesn’t want to read these rants? I suspect the latter. Every time someone writes a passionate critique of the film, we get these suggestions to focus on stuff we like. In other words stop b****ing about stuff that I like. Well I like to write about this stuff, amongst other things.
I would agree with this.
A perspective:

I mean, people still don’t even know what the hell Yoda EVEN IS, much less who his parents are.
But Rey Nobody from Nowhere gotta have her birth certificate & 2 forms of ID before we’ll let her lift some rocks & fly some spaceships real good.
OK.
I think that most people who thought Rey’s character was unbelievable in TFA wouldn’t be satisfied if the explanation for her unrealistic powers was “she’s a Skywalker” or “she’s a Kenobi”. I love the idea Rey Nobody from Nowhere, but she’s way too overpowered for me to care.
And to be fair I don’t remember anyone in this thread complaining about Rey being a nobody.
Gotta advocate for Dr.Dre here. This isn’t a what you like or what you didn’t like about TLJ thread. It’s a Review thread. It’s thought to be a place to post reflections based on the movie and what might come in the future of the saga. The content of those reflections can’t be ever thought as toxic, or partial because it IS partial per se. Because they are just readings on the movie itself by someone. To suggest anybody to think well or bad of the movie in order not to irritate those who think well or bad of the movie through an explicit post is to leave the thread without essence.
We’re here to discuss the movie through our messages and reflections, that should be the only way to convince someone if the movie is either good, bad, likeable, dislikeable, family-friendly, individual-friendly, western, oriental, screws the OT, doesn’t screw the OT, etc.
And it’s a tricky movie, so hope for long posts, because in the end this is a forum of discussion.
I play Galaxy of Heroes, and naturally they are adding new TLJ characters to the game. Rose is apparently coming soon, and people are pissed if the official forum is any guide. People are actually saying she’s worse than Jar Jar.
smh
She wasn’t a great character, but nothing is worse than Jar Jar.
What do people not like about her?
What do people not like about her?
She’s not Jar Jar.
Or something else, I dunno. It’s a lot of “she’s the worst” and “she’s useless” and some “SJW blah blah blah.”

I can see the argument that her character was unnecessary or uninteresting, but I didn’t see anything that made her detestable. I thought she was fine. The hate for her character seems to come from many different people, not only from those expressing a sexist or racist point of view. And I don’t recall anyone hating on her in this thread in any major way. Maybe as a new main character she’s drawing disproportionate ire.

The audience reviews on rotten tomatoes give lots of reasons, so do a lot of the review videos on youtube.
For me, I feel she could have been edited out of the film and it wouldn’t have mattered. Her character was underdeveloped and had poorly-written dialogue, like “we shouldn’t fight against what we hate, we should fight for what we love” (or something). To me, that’s right up there with “you’re breaking my heart!” and “sand is rough and your skin is smooth” (or something).
Zzz
Rose is a better character than Lando was. Barely. But still.

I’m not sure what that means.

Seriously? Lando was a pretty pivotal character and really set all the events in motion for the 2nd half of the movie. He partnered with Vader to trap Luke and in the process got Han nearly killed and shipped off to Jabba (remember?)
No Lando: no cloud city, no luke/vader duel (no “I am your father”), no carbonite, no Jabba, no reason for rotj basically.
What exactly did Rose do that was so important (besides setting free horse-llama things and preventing Finn from committing an act of selflessness)?
Well, I didn’t really mind Rose until she stopped Finn from killing himself, then I started thinking she’s annoying. Lucky me she had no more lines after that. But oh god, how someone even comparea her to that thing from TPM is beyond me.

Lando beats Rose on charisma alone.
Lando is infinitely more interesting than Rose. It’s such a shame the way ROTJ treated him.
