LordPlagueis, thanks for clarifying. If one moved the two Snoke/Hux scenes back to back it would have to imply a timejump since there’s a change of location. It’d also push back the reintroduction of Luke and Rey further.

The ‘Luke mourns Han’ scene was reinserted where the deleted scenes reel has it, and with the footage available I’m not sure how one could go from “Where’s Han” immediately into him crying. Rey is in the room at first, then suddenly not, and Luke processes things rather suddenly. I think as things stand Luke putting up a front and retreating allows him to cry in private about what’s built up, and cutting directly to Leia implies Han is at the center of it for both of them.
I agree that it’s a stronger cut (or radial wipe, but you know what I mean) from Rey’s line about not leaving without him to her following him around the island, though. I wonder if RJ was right to cut the snippet along with the Finn and Poe scene. I at least see why, even if they’re worth including for the sheer value of this edit bring ‘alternative.’ V3 will be a few minutes longer than V2, and neither features the callback to Poe’s line about where Finn belongs. If one can only have both or neither of these scenes, perhaps the original film is a better option.

But it is only a minor change in location: They are still on the same ship.

The ‘Luke mourns Han’ scene was reinserted where the deleted scenes reel has it, and with the footage available I’m not sure how one could go from “Where’s Han” immediately into him crying. Rey is in the room at first, then suddenly not, and Luke processes things rather suddenly.

As soon as Luke learns of Han’s untimely death, he would force Rey out of his hut for a moment alone to process his emotions. That would be apparent from the shot of Luke closing the door next to the shot of Rey’s eyes peering into the door slot.

I think as things stand Luke putting up a front and retreating allows him to cry in private about what’s built up, and cutting directly to Leia implies Han is at the center of it for both of them.

But he would be too emotionally overcome to put on a front.

Fair enough, on all points, I suppose. But I know they aren’t changes I would like to make.
And I don’t think Snoke was on the ship with Hux. The officer tells him Snoke is “making contact from his ship,” which we later see is the enormous paper airplane-looking ship.

Anybody have any ideas for potential uses for an isolated score track? Any dialogue removal requests?
My brain is fried most days right now but wanted to ask for any input in case anything good comes up.

Hmmm, I am not sure at the moment where have just an isolated score track would be helpful.

Sorry for the fried brain my friend. If anything comes up I would be more than happy to help out.

Nothing to worry about; there may be nothing to gain from it but I thought it’s worth asking about. 😉

I don’t want to include it as an alternate track, but to see whether there are any tweaks that would be good to make that would utilize it.

And I know I might sound like a broken record at this point, but I’ll mention it one more time - I’m a huge advocate for redubbing the “parking violation” alien on Canto Bight. Maybe it doesn’t bother other people the same way it bothers me, but his southern drawl really takes me out of things. Plus including some alien language with subtitles would give it some OT vibes.

For me, the parking violation alien (if you mean Slowen Lo) sounds a bit like Bernie Sanders for some reason.

Are you planning on making another version of your edits to Episodes VII and VIII after seeing Episode IX?

I’m doing a V3 for TLJ, and I’m just going to hold off on finalizing it until after seeing IX just in case. But I won’t revisit TFA unless IX gives me a reason to.

Now that I am starting to turn some of my attention to THE LAST JEDI, I hate to make this edit much longer than it already is. It’s already the longest Star Wars movie, and when I consider that my prequel edits clock it at as low as 1 hour and 50 minutes, I am wondering what else could be trimmed.

I am just tossing this around, but what do you guys think of the idea to borrow poppasketti’s approach to removing the Finn vs. Phasma duel? Compared to the theatrical TLJ, this hypothetical version of Finn’s journey would…

  • Add the orientation early on from the deleted scene with Poe’s jacket
  • Reinstate a sense of “wow I guess people get oppressed” from the Canto Bight balcony (compared to TLJ:L V2, anyway)
  • Remove Finn and Rose racking up insurance claims across Space Vegas
  • Remove his fight with Phasma, but reinstating the scene that demonstrates his resolve and references the earlier deleted scene

It seems like Finn would still have a good arc this way. The only concern that sticks out to me about the idea is that Phasma gets reintroduced only to die offscreen. I’d rather she not appear in the film at all if we go this way, but this is the way it would have to be. For this reason, I am leaning away from making this change, but I felt it was worthwhile to toss out there for discussion.

I know you moved away from this idea, but have you thought at all about revisiting it, considering the new Phasma shots Poppasketti created for an upcoming version of his edit? I don’t know that I have a strong preference either way, but it would seem your main sticking point with the change has been solved.

Author

Yes, I am planning to make that change. Seeing Phasma’s corpse sells the idea well enough for me.

A workprint for V3 is going up onto the Google Drive now. It’s about 6GB, 720p, with high quality audio. If one wished to watch the Hal9000 presentation of the saga, ROTJ and TLJ V3 are available as workprints in very watchable quality.

What’s new compared to V2:

  • Removed the silly mugshot of Hux after commenting on Poe’s X-wing approach
  • Removed Luke’s quip about Jakku being “pretty much nowhere” (the new movies are somewhat snarky in ways the OT never was IMHO, and so I’d rather keep Luke away from that - humor, but not gags)
  • Removed Rose responding to Finn’s “MTFBWY” with “you too.”
  • Reinstated Rose repeating “…they can track us through lightspeed.”
  • Tighten up Finn and Rose’s reaction to Maz’s “Oh yes, he can” for better timing
  • Reinstate a trimmed version of the balcony scene overlooking kids and horses being beaten on Canto Bight
  • Reinstate Rey asking Kylo Ren if he has a cowl to put on
  • Re-add Kylo describing Rey’s parents as dead, bc I feel its likely this will be referenced in IX
  • Removed Finn’s fight with Phasma by using what poppasketti did, which now includes a brief visual of Phasma’s corpse laying around to help sell the idea

So I took a look at V3 workprint (actually my first viewing of Legendary all the way through) and I have to say that I think it all worked really well! I’m in the camp that loved the movie to begin with, but I think the edits you made definitely make it feel tighter and more focused in places. The deleted scenes are also integrated really well and feel like they always should have been there.

A few minor nitpicks:

I personally don’t care for the removal of the “Triple TIE combo shot”. I think the Falcon’s entrance on Crait now feels underwhelming. It just kind of shows up.

If it’s possible to redub the parking violation alien with Abednedo language, I’d like to see it. It’s true that aliens with accented English are not new to Star Wars, but it feels like distinctly a prequel thing rather than an OT thing. It’s also one more element that makes Canto Bight feel more familiar than alien compared to other Star Wars locales.

I wonder if it would be possible to adjust Poe’s dialogue during the prank call scene so that he’s clearly saying “General Hux” rather than “General Hugs”. I think that’s one of the elements that still makes the scene feel a bit too cheeky considering what you’re going for with the rest of the edit.

Thanks for the feedback!

I agree it’d be worthwhile to try to get Poe to clearly articulate “Hux.” I’ll have to try to play with that.

I still don’t take issue with the parking guy, so I’m not sure what else to say. And I prefer this version of the Falcon showing up at Crait. It’s a bit more subtle, with the shadow revealing what it is in a fan moment sort of way.

I dunno, the whole hugs thing is fine as it’s been trimmed down a bit. The moma joke was too much. Recall that Poe is a pretty cocky guy. The whole point is he is trying to distract Hux to gain some time. Admittedly, Hux is the kind of guy to be caught off since he is so into himself and demands such awe inspiring respect/attention … but isn’t wise enough to catch on to such things.

Thanks Hal for your edits although I enjoyed the films at the cinema your edits have been my go to for both TFA & TLJ.
I’m happy to see you’ve got a v3 workprint for TLJ which I’m currenly in the process of getting and reading the changes I’m glad to see they are only subtle and also make sense specificaly Kylo explaining Rays parents as this is expected to be mentioned in ROS.

My main hopes are ROS doesnt mess with your edits continuity and that the new film hopefully wont require to much editing/fixing 😉.

Will post back when I’ve watched your v3.

Watched your v3 workprint from start to finish last night and am happy to see the changes are subtle but all are worth the attention with the Canto Bight balcony scene adding more depth to the good vs bad view and just that bit more screen time to better explain broom boys charactor for whom I dont mind. Also the new phasmas corpse scene isnt too in your face and I really like how it works reminds me of how Bobba Fett met his rather humble demise 😁. Would be nice to not have Rey interpret Chewie for Luke also.

At this stage for me The Last Jedi Legendary edit is pretty much the best it can be there are a few slight frame cuts and one deleted scene that would be nice to be added but understand why its not put in this edit.

Possible small fixes are:

@ 23:35 - Luke Fishing Scene
Issue: Rey shouts careful as the jedi master jumps over to the cliff on the pole.
Fix: Possibly cutting to Lukes face as he looks over and removing her shout out as if to say follow me now.

@ 1:13:10 - Rey vs Luke
Issue: As Rey fells Luke and holds his sabre over him the jedi master looks up helplessly.
Fix: By cutting to Rey unigniting the sabre strait after Luke holds himself with the force from the fall we can remove the initial shocked expression which helps play out the my mind is not in the fight viewpoint.

@ 1:37:52 - Praetorian Guards Missing Blade
Issue - The infirmus praetorian guard missing blade scene which you see him holding in his left hand one moment then badly CGIed out the next.
Fix: Cut from Kylos zoom in to the moment after the sabre strikes @ 1:37:53 where his left bladed hand is not visible we can then assume he lost the missing blade during the stuggle with Rey.

And now the missing scene which I know wont go in because it goes against your efforts in this edit but hey can’t blame a StarWars fan for trying 😉, maybe if you could have a version of your edit with just only a very trimmed down scene with the caretakers introduction from Luke just so we can get Lukes deleted third lession scene in some form into The Last Jedi Legendary. Mate everytime I watch this in my head I see that missing scene which works so well to explain what Luke is trying to convey to Rey and us the audiense that hey the Jedi of old would rather meditate over “their” force then get involved in other peoples problems.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to write up some ideas.

I’m not sure Luke beckoning Rey to pursue him during the fishing scene makes a lot of sense, as it’s bookended by variations of “leave me alone.”

While I can’t say I’m bothered by a slight technical continuity issue like the guard’s blade, I’ll take a look at what you suggest along with Luke vs Rey. They both sound good on paper at least.

I think the scene where Rey races to save the caretakers is the whole point for having them in the movie, and so an edit should have this scene added or else remove the caretakers. The scene has unfinished FX, for one thing. And I happen to agree with RJ’s commentary on the scene: removing it allows the audience to believe that Luke is beginning to come around and there’s a real sense of hope that he and Rey can work together before he stumbled onto she and Kylo in the hut.
I do like the scene and its message, but I think it was a good trim, and I don’t have a ‘but we spent so much on the costumes’ concern preventing me from removing the caretakers altogether.
