The Last Jedi: Legendary (SPOILERS) — Page 33

That is an interesting thought, I wonder though if it makes it a “harder” sell that the group gets a ship to leave without any piece of the chase. As your edit stands, they go down the pipe and later you see them in a ship. One can conclude they used the “sewer” to get out and get DJ’s “borrowed” ship.

If I recall correctly, it is just Finn and Rose at the stables … so by having the chase cut how can it be explained or even assumed in a some what natural sense they meet up with BB8 and DJ.

Again not trying too shoot things down so quickly since I am too thinking out loud regarding it. I do understand having those moments may help motivate Finn a bit more and naturally before he makes his full dedication to the cause.

Hal, I’m glad you brought this up! I’ve been wondering the same thing ever since V1 of this project was released. I even tried making this change myself until I realized I was completely useless with editing software and didn’t have the time to invest in learning how.

I don’t know how exactly one would pull it off but I think it’s worth looking into / discussing!

What would you have done if you could have? I’ve got some stuff to do fan editing wise with the other movies, so my attention wouldn’t come around to TLJ for a while in any event, but I’m open to ideas about this.
At present this seems like something people in the alternate universe would have said, “These deleted sequences would have really fleshed out the character of Finn but they aren’t very good and would have messed up the pacing.”

Truth be told, while I want any of my edits to be watchable as films, I… I don’t really care about Finn. He just doesn’t seem believable for what he’s set up to be, I guess.

It’s been a while so I can’t remember exactly what my plan was, but essentially I would have kept the intro to the scene exactly as it is in Legendary, but after the champagne pop, continue the scene as it is in the theatrical release. That way we see are introduced to the slave children and the fathiers, and manage to have a tiny bit of character development for both Rose and Finn. I understand that you might not like Finn all that much, but in my mind this really helps sell the idea that he’s realizing there’s more to life than self-preservation and saving Rey - that he can help others and fight injustice.

And then yeah, I guess I’d cut the entire fathier chase? Not sure if a truncated version could be pulled off. But basically I’d play the rest out exactly as you have it already.

Oh, and maybe it’s overkill, but I’d want to redub the “parking violation” alien to make him sound less “southern American”. A more neutral accent or alien language would help him blend into the story a little better in my opinion. Right now he just stands out.

I wonder what meaning people would have made out of TLJ:L V2 if it were what they had seen in the theater. I imagine people would respond to people who would say Finn’s arc doesn’t make sense by pointing out how Rose and DJ represent two paths he could go down.

In the first Canto Bight scene he hears from Rose that the First Order raped and executed her family or whatever, but he already knew they were bad. Then he learns about third party war profiteering, which DJ teaches him again later anyway. Then, he learns that the wealthy locals are oppressive and maybe wishes he could do something about it, but doesn’t directly.

And… I guess his arc seems to be about the same with or without that scene. All the later sequence does is give some wealthy people an insurance payout.

I know it’s impossible to really do, but I wonder what the argument and thoughts would have been if this is what the movie was.

Appart from finn if this was the version in theaters i think people would have been less ofended by the film, despise it’s glaring issues i loved the movie since day and made me fall in love in star wars again, this version only needs rose giving finn the lecture in the casino before them being caught, and it would be perfect.

I suppose being introduced to the oppressed kids at that point in the movie along with what would become a sentiment of “I wish I could do something about this place but we have our mission” would make the film’s epilogue more inspiring.
Finn and Rose can’t do everything everywhere there’s trouble, but YOU can. Eh?

I will mull this over, and maybe by the time I get my revisions of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 out the door I can make a quick stop at TLJ again. But probably not until after 9 is out, in case anything about it has influence over editing TLJ.

Yeah, you’re right - Finn’s arc really doesn’t change much by removing the scene. I suppose that including it just makes it all a lot more obvious.

I REALLY wish I could see TLJ:L with fresh eyes. I can’t help but feel like Canto Bight is rushed and that including more of the scene would help that, but perhaps it’s perfectly fine the way it is! It’s definitely the version I’ll be watching come Fall when I start my annual rewatch.

Yeah… the balcony scene sure feels like it’s setting some specific things up that just would be dropped without the fathier chase sequence. I’m not sure retaining it and not the chase would really make for a more convincing film.

I understand what what Abram means that the Canto Bight section does feel rushed since so much of it was removed … which it needed some good trimming no matter what. It has been awhile since I’ve watched the theatrical, can the scene be trimmed in such a way that it’s not such a focus on “wanting to get back at them” feel for it but more of the unjust system?

It may not be for a while, but I will do an earnest mock-up of that idea and see how it fairs. I certainly wouldn’t want to actually put out a V3 until seeing IX, but I could imagine exporting a workprint for anyone interested if I do decide to implement that idea.

Author
Time

I’d be interested in the workprint, but honestly, it’s not necessary! Don’t do more work than you need to! We will patiently wait for a V3 - I’m sure you’ll have plenty of new things to attempt after Ep. 9 is released.

Could you also please send PM me a link to you edit too.

Watched the fan edit i liked it, but i agree, finn arc doesn’t work without him discovering the kids, animals and the effects of the war on others, if i watched this version the first time i would have noticed that something was missing from the film like something was clearly cut from the film and finn storyline, that litle part is the only thing that makes this an obvious fan edit 😛.

Yeah, I’m planning to try a serious attempt at mocking up that scene. Hopefully it’ll be better with the “wow look at how bad this place really is” scene but not with the fathier sequence. To me it would say that that city represents the galaxy at large, and while they can’t really directly intervene there and then, thy can through fighting the good fight, and can even inspire the local residents to do something themselves.

I understand what Juan means, for a first time viewer it seems like something is missing or it was a wasted opportunity or something without a little more. I may have some free time this week and come up with some ideas and upload some clips on this thread if that is ok with you Hal!

Before I get the right source to play around with the Canto Bight Section, I’d like some thoughts about what makes the balcony scene lead to the expectation something is going to, or needs to be done, with the Fathiers from being abused.

My first thought to help alleviate the expectation/need for the Fathier escape/release/attack on society is removing Rose’s line of “Wanting to punch the city.” That in itself is an easy removal since we cue it BB-8 rolling up to get their attention about the code breaker. I would need help with removing the “rolling coin sound” that BB-8 makes. If I remember correctly, I think Ridley did this when they found the Code Breaker?

Lastly, in the back of my mind it seems we would need to remove maybe just one instance of the Fathiers being ripped, mainly the Fathier Jockey you see. I would keep the other “whipping” when it came to the Fathier Keeper with the Jedi Boi and crew, since it not only focuses on cruelty of not just the Fathiers but of the “lowly” people like what the First Order does and it’s correlation with planets and society like Canto Bight. Also another positive of having this we get to see our Jedi Boi before the very ending, which we get that connection of him from the removal of this scene and later in the Stable.

This is my current thinking that will take some work since there is an overlap of Rose’s dialogue and the sound of the Fathier cries and electric whip.

I think I agree with that overall. I have a version of how the scene could go in my head, but it will probably be a little while before I am able to realize it in a mockup.
Bonus points for removing Rose getting excited about seeing the Fathiers. I imagine it would be more effective to merely see them react to the poor mistreatment of what are essentially space horses Van to set up a miniature Free Willy subplot for them.

Here is my ROUGH draft of an edited scene:

https://vimeo.com/345609062

The password is fanedit.

The focus on this edit is to remove the theme of “poor creatures” and “I want to do (and I will do) something about it!” (Basically remove another one of those agendas in this movie.) At the same time, we try to tamper the audience expectations that the heroes may do something about it since the agenda was heavily displayed … and in The Last Jedi each agenda was both introduced and answered. (Crying Porgy anyone?)

It now focuses on the ENTIRE situation of the Star Wars Universe at this time. Not just certain animals are mistreated, but people too. Recall, in The Force Awakens, the Republic doesn’t seem to care, or at least is not motivated to do something about the threat of the First Order. If you do not read any of the books, comics, articles or etc., we don’t really understand why. Since it would be better for the movies themselves explain SOME of the plot/situation/reason, let’s not have the audience need to look up “why” things are this way.

So, by reinstating some more of the Canto Bight section of the movie, we get more of an explanation why that is the case … why when the distress signal went out later in the movie, no one answered Leia’s call. The answer? Money. Power. Influence.

The Powers That Be do not wish to go against the First Order since they have a very profitable arrangement. Granted, this is not the most original idea, but it helps gives us an explanation on what’s going on with the current Star Wars Universe since Finn has been, in a sense, “sheltered” as a storm trooper in the First Order.

There still needs to be some tidying up, like removing the rolling coin sound from BB8. Also maybe some minor touches to some scene transitions with the music. But overall, this clip gives us an idea.

A bonus aspect of this edited scene is we get to see our Jedi Boi. This helps “sell” the ending of the movie. Here we see he tries to stand up against “evil” but fails. However, after Luke’s heroic stand against the First Order (evil) that sparks life into the “new” rebellion, there is hope that motivates our Jedi Boi after hearing that story.

Thanks for posting that, and I like it overall.
I’d probably leave in Rose’s line onboard the shuttle about the populace being the worse people imaginable.
And I’d leave in a shortened version of the little alien placing a coin into BB8, otherwise it seems like Finn and Rose take 4 seconds to give up looking.
I wonder if Rose’s two lines about fathiers can be removed, but I suspect not.

Author
Time

I’ll post one with the populace being worse in there, that does fuel Finn’s line more about why she hates it so much. So I’ll mock on up with that.

I’ll mess around with a shortened coin sequence as well and see how that looks.

The last one is a toughy. Mainly because of her line inside the casino after the “Fathier” quake that prompted them to go outside. I’ll try it out on removing her two lines and see how it feels. It may, or may not, feel strange she does not elaborate on those critters.

But hey, it doesn’t hurt to try it out and see. Thanks for the feedback Hal!
