Is this him?
He acts like he’s a professional editor, but what commercial product has he edited?
He did mention in several videos that he has worked on Behind the movement for tv one.
I have a dumb username
and I don’t get why he opened a thread here if he doesn’t show up from time to time (maybe he does but since he doesn’t login or leaves replies it’s hard to tell). Perhaps we should stop posting his new videos and let him do that himself ? (for example Adywan doesn’t show up very often but he’s a long time member of the community and each time there is something new he posts the news himself in his topic)
I actually was the one who reached out to him early on and said he should post his progress on here. We exchanged some emails over everything and I thought he would actually post progress and gather feedback but I think he interpreted it more as plugging his Youtube channel. Personally I think hundreds of random Youtube comments aren’t as helpful as the responses you could get on here or FE.org.
And I also suggested that he use vimeo for his previews. Oh well…
Is this him?
It lists being a director and writer as well for multiple feature length films so I would say most likely not.
It does? I only see them listed as shorts. Also, at the bottom of the page there’s a 2018 listing as himself for “Interview - Ivan Ortega on Re-Editing Star Wars: The Last Jedi”. So I think it’s safe to say that’s him.
Just checked out a post on his patreon from a viewer who previewed a draft of the edit. Reading through the complaints, it really seems like the editing is quite shabby.
Here’s the post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/19314505
I think the most interesting thing I gathered from that complaint list is using an Alec Guinness poetry reading as ghost dialogue.
I don’t know how well it’s executed, but the idea is definitely interesting.
I have only watched a couple of his videos and he may be “making the most of it” but as a radical dreamer myself I find some of his ideas interesting, I like his music choices rant, I I think he may have saved the luke sabers toss which is one of my most hated scenes since jar jar nominated palpatine. What if he does get convincing voice actors? Might be good stuff in there, I guess time will tell, at least you can tell he is putting in thought and effort. My 2 cents

Yeah I don’t think I’ll be watching his final versions, I do like some of his ideas for reference and inspiration that skilled editors that I trust might use later on.

Hello there!
My name is Ivan and I am a professional film editor but most importantly a Star Wars fan.

Oof, the more I see, the more suspicious I become. I wouldn’t feel this way if he didn’t introduce himself as a “professional film editor”.
He has a YouTube live stream going on right now and I asked him when he’s planning to drop by, talk about his progress and read some (good) ideas + opinions in this thread. I also asked about if he is really planning to go with the 2.0 stereo audio.
His response: “I don’t know. I really don’t have the time, you know? I am just one person.”
…and with that, I think I’ll pass on this one. It’s pretty clear now that he is more interested in getting loads of subscribers on his channel (while the iron is still hot). At the moment his stream chat is just full of people asking him to edit every single movie from Alien 3 to Indiana Jones because “those really need his touch”.

I believe his response to the 2.0 stereo was that he is working with someone on it and that he wants to get it fixed

Well, if he didn’t use a pirated download for his edit he might have 5.1 or even 7.1 audio. I was intrigued at first, but I have become more and more disappointed the more I see on YouTube. I just hope this doesn’t become the catalyst for shutting down the fan edit community.
“You can’t polish a turd. But you can shape it to look like candy.”
What frustrates me is that the Youtube comments are a terrible way to get feedback. It’s people who probably haven’t seen a quality fan edit before, and are fine with basically anything. It’s just annoying that he would prioritize Youtube subscribers over making a quality edit. He is just one man but he obviously has the time.
It seems that he’s only interested in receiving feedback from his Patreon followers.

That’s what concerns me as well. I don’t care about whatever he wants to do, but his lack of discretion could potentially hurt us all collectively. And I really don’t feel great selling merchandise related to a fan edit. This is quite different than chipping in so Adywan or Harmy can get a graphics card or something to dedicate to their projects.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

This.
I mentioned this on one of his videos when he was saying he didn’t understand why YouTube wouldn’t monetize his channel. His response was, “True true”.
It seems that he’s only interested in receiving feedback from his Patreon followers.
I think it has more to do with the $ people are giving him.

“We ❤️ Star Wars and give it all the moneys. Please don’t sue us.”
But it seems the guy is making money out of fan-editing a SW movie… wouldn’t it be wise to delete this thread ?
I’m wondering if it would be wise for other fan editors to report him for doing so somehow - as in, whether that would be a good “cover our ass” move, or if it would just put even more of a target on the community’s back…
I just checked out his Patreon and it is quite baffling. You get access to to the Patreon feed (most recent progress updates), rough cuts, 30min Skype call, give input on what to edit… for $100 (per month?!).
…and I’m getting all these features for free on this forum with more “professional editor” people. Well, I haven’t Skype’d with Harmy, Ady or HAL yet but… I really feel bad for Ortega’s supporters who are expecting some “official fan edit”.
Way overpriced… well, the fact he is getting money for this is too much. Honestly, the more I hear about this dude, the more deplorable he seems.
In comparison, the YouTuber, Skallagrim, is someone who has Patreon rewards that include Skype / Discord calls. However, instead of $100 for 30 minutes he has $50 for an Hour per month. It might seem excessive, but he actually makes proper content and does YouTube for a living.
This hobby is very much not something that generates income, but if it were… Man, I could have retired by now. 😉
JEDIT: I missed an opportunity to say “Would that it were…” D’oh!
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
I can’t wait to see this guy try to charge for the final edit.
Jesus Christ, his poor followers on Patreon. If they only knew…
