Good point. I guess it’s just mysterious in it’s own way 😃

But a BIG and very important change I think needs to be made is how to solve the absolutely infuriating moment when Rose crashes into Finn’s ski speeder. If Luke did not show up, then her dumb move would have killed the Resistance for all we know just for what? To keep Finn alive to get a smooch and then let the First Order take him prisoner when they blow open the door and capture our heroes. But by coincidence we get Luke to show up.

Rose “saving” Finn was a First Order strategically based move and robbed us of an otherwise awesome end we could have gotten for Finn. I want to somehow fix this but don’t know how yet and would love to hear ideas. It is the one major flaw that is bugging me.

To me it seemed like Finn was either going to get hit before he made it, or crashing into the weapon wasn’t going to accomplish much. Basically, it seemed like he was making a sacrifice for the sake of it.

I think they made it clear that it was between him destroying the weapon and himself, or saving himself and the weapon. Rose clearly says that basically with the line of “more important to save those who we love, than defeat those who we hate”

Yeah but that line is the whole point. Attacking the weapon is a fruitless maneuver designed just to hurt them (like with the Dreadnaught at the start of the film). The Resistance was in a dire situation there even if the weapon was blown. The more important thing to do was to go back to the base and figure out most importantly how to save everyone they could, however they could.

Exactly. And this event parallaled the exact same thing that Poe Dameron did in the beginning of the movie; going for damage and loss (on the Dreadnought), rather than patience and perhaps survival for the people. Finn dooming himself would just be another small loss for the bastards their fighting, but an enourmous loss for the people who cared about him.

JEDIT: Sometimes it’s simply just about waiting for the oppurtune time, and this wasn’t it.

After two viewings, this movie at least seems integrated. It’d be tough to do much plot restructuring, though perhaps some reordering and pruning could help.
I guess it’s a good sign that everything I consider whether it could be cut ends up being thematically relevant or necessary to the plot. (Example: After Finn says to Rose that rampaging through the Casino was worth it, I’d be inclined to trim away, “…to make them hurt.” But, it ties into his and Rose’s story toward the end.

Also, I saw the movie twice and I did not see the Jedi texts anywhere in the movie after Yoda burns down a church. If it weren’t for you all insisting they made it onto the Falcon, I’d be convinced they were destroyed. I suppose one could remove the entire Yoda scene, and even the texts from later in the movie, to assume Rey later retrieved them after the film ends. (Not a problem since we know she knows where to find them and haven’t implied they’re gone.)

I like the content of the Yoda scene, but that was a “look what I bought at Target” level of horrible Yoda. CPY has nothing on this one. If that’s the best they could have done I think they ought to have made it CG.
(It almost looks like when they’re done, the real Yoda would appear, and take a puppet off his own hand.)

First viewing of the movie, so I will be seeing it a few times to have a better feel for it or think of things that stuck out.

The Superman Leia scene just felt … awkward. Didn’t feel right. For editing purposes, my first rough draft thought is having the first moment of the bridge getting hit with the missiles, cuts to the outside of the bridge exploding. Eventually, it cuts to the crew running up to the door to see Leia’s hand. Not sure how smooth that can be, but one could assume that she used the force to keep her safe in there, knowing the bridge was going to get hit.

I love my Yoda, but holy cow, Yoda didn’t look like Yoda. Jim Henson knew how to make puppets … 30+ years ago! That I would say … should have used CGI if that was going to be Yoda’s look.

I think the Island scenes could be trimmed down, the pacing seemed to have slowed down a bit too much for me.

Just initial thoughts before seeing it again without the fresh new eyes on it.

If it can be implied through editing or maybe changing a few mentions of her to different names, remove Maz and imply Poe sent them after the codebreaker. (Might be slightly incongruous when he asks if they got the codebreaker and doesn’t seem to know who it is.)

Get rid of Maz.

Get rid of ”Droids” style clowning around by BB8 on the casino world as well as using an AT-ST.

Bring the humor down just a notch through careful selection, avoiding jokes one’s mother would notice being gone when viewing again a year later. (Yeah… let’s go with that as a rough barometer.)

Possibly remove Yoda burning down a church and Rey having the Jedi texts later on. (No need for a surprise reveal; there’s already plenty of those and it was unnecessarily confusing to even me after two viewings! Rey can be safely assumed to go and refer to those texts sometime later.)

The last scene usually has no dialogue, but that’s not the case here. If one wanted to remove the Oliver Twist ending, the previous scene wouldn’t be any worse for it. (I probably wouldn’t do that though, myself.)

“Big-ass door”? I did not appreciate the degree to which the real-world/Marvelish/GOTG permeated language and quips. Removing just the handful of those that go over the top would be helpful.

Guys, I left TFA’s second viewing concluding that no fan edit was necessary, and only ended up doing one because a beautifully elegant idea emerged that was too good to leave unrealized. In the case of TLJ, I find myself wanting to grapple with this movie but finding not a lot to do. I’ll be following this thread diligently.

EDIT: Oh, and if we could remove maybe just one of the seventy-four death fake-outs, that’d be great.

Rey being sent away by Luke really should have been the Impetus for Kylo’s turn to the dark side, not Luke’s fear of Kylo’s darkness.

Luke tells us about himself grappling with his own status as a “legend.” If Rey had been a half sister of Kylo Ren, the words of Yoda “there is another,” could have thematically connected to Luke’s struggle. IE Luke was going to be upstaged by the raw potential of the next generation, vanity, anger, etc. (over her parentage) also being a factor of why Luke sends her away.

I think force backs could be used to change who Rey’s parents are and to erase this idea of Luke as a psychopath hellbent on killing his own nephew.

I would suggest cutting the Fathier chase entirely and go through Canto Bight as soon as possible to improve the pacing. We could cut straight from the other plots to DJ picking up Finn/rose. I’m debating whether or not the scene where Rose explaining her past should be kept though, but one thing is for certain, remove the kiss.

As for the Leia scene, I liked the concept, But I think it would be far better if she traveled a shorter distance. Would require some audio work, but remove most of the shots of her flying. Just the shots of her moving her hand and opening her eyes, and then almost immediately to her reaching the bridge.

Also remove the “reach out” joke, BB-8 slot machine, and “Hold the line.”

I kind of want to get rid of the casino altogether.

Can we cut out anytime a character is asleep or knocked out, and you get a closeup shot of them gasping awake quickly? Feels like that happens about every 10 minutes.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

It’s so odd to say it, but AOTC sold me on Star Warsy gambling hub; TLJ’s casino was like we took a time machine to the 1920’s and dropped aliens into it.
Also, I would LOVE to see someone fanedit podracers into the scene where the initial space horses are revealed.

My biggest beef with the movie was there was no time to breathe. The pacing was at break-neck speed. I’m hoping some of the deleted scenes will have some nice establishing shots that we can pull frim

I hated the film completely, so unless any of you can save it then we must as fans boycott this trash and attempt to save our beloved franchise.

As I watched the film for the very first time in theaters, I was thinking to myself, “I want to cut this in my fanedit.” So many poor choices with the script, I just have trouble comprehending why they made some of the decisions they did.

  • Don’t get me wrong, it’s okay to have humor in Star Wars. I thought the humor in The Force Awakens was perfect, and I actually do not like fan edits that try to strip it all out. But the lame jokes in The Last Jedi were way over the top.

  • We need to find some way to kill Leia on-screen. I don’t want to sound like an asshole, but we know that since Carrie Fisher passed away, they’ve already said she won’t be CGI’d into Episode IX. There were opportunities in this film to have her character pass away in line with her qualities as a Resistance leader. She could have died in the explosion, or in recovery, or she could have even been the one to go kamikaze in the end and save the Resistance in the process. No idea how to handle this one.

  • And numerous other things.

I wish they wouldn’t have made so many poor choices with this film, because much of what they did can not be fixed in fanediting. And for that matter, much of it cannot be fixed for Episode IX.

Just found this at deadline.com

There’s a lot of movie here, though. It runs 152 minutes and moves around a lot.
RJ: We shot a lot, man. Just like any other film, it came together in the edit. The editing is the completion of the writing process. We were not at all precious about this film. We tore it apart. We ripped stuff out. There’s going to be a lot of great deleted scenes. I’m not trying to sell Blu-rays here, there are just going to be a lot of deleted scenes.
And it’s not just shots of characters walking down hallways, either. There are entire sequences that got lifted out of it, which taken on their own are some of my favorite sequences in the movie. But for the good of the whole, they had to come out. We rearranged stuff. We were constantly messing with the intercutting between the plot lines. There are very few of the intercuts that are in there as written in the script. We ended up re-engineering a lot of it during the course of editing because that’s what the edit is for. All bets are off, and you just have to make the thing work.

So hopefully there will be a lot to play with.

This news is very exciting. Rian sounds quite serious about the quality and depth of the scenes we’re getting. What I’m thinking is to use some of the good deleted scenes with Rey, Luke, Kylo and Snoke, and throw those in too beef up that plot thread in replacement for a heavily cut down version of Canto Bight. At least that’s my thinking right now.

Edit out Admiral Ackbar’s death. Then have him stay behind on the rebel cruiser and hyperspace into the enemy fleet.

That way he’ll go out taking yet another command ship with him, completing the circle (so to speak) and getting the noble death such a revered character deserves.

Leaving aside how impossible that would be to pull off, what would you do with one of the new main sub characters introduced in this film? (Holdo)

I would say do this with Leia instead. If that’s even possible to somehow edit (not likely).
